Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

I just took delivery of my first 'forward purchasing' shop today but told the delivery driver that it was the first big payday shop since before Christmas...wonder if he keeps a log of who is stocking up with what Hmm

I bought some of those ambrosia custard pots, a bit like yoghurts. But they don't have to be refrigerated (I've got a tiny fridge and freezer, hence stocking up on long-life stuff). Plus packet jelly. Also primula. My older 2 dc love Bachelors 'deli-pots' in chicken. (A bit like pot noodle). They've got them in b and m for 69p each. In fact my ds would happily live off them if I let him, so stocked up on those.

TheWoollybacksWife · 02/02/2019 17:06

I popped into Morrisons this afternoon for some fresh veg to go with tomorrow's roast. On the back of this thread I was checking out where the shelves were bare. There were no tinned peaches in syrup and no sponge puddings. The tinned tomatoes were a bit thin on the ground and there were gaps in the herbs and spices section.

Large boxes of Oxo were on offer so I picked up two big boxes of chicken. It turns out I should have bought beef ones as they were the ones I really needed. Hey-ho I can always barter them or use them as a weapon 😂

I've been to my mums today and checked her supplies. I've taken her some chocolate as a treat and some cereal bars. I've got 3 packets of chocolate hobnobs for my BB which cheers me up as I'm quite happy to eat 4 for lunch abs feel satisfiedSmile

no sponge puddings :(

We did get out to sainsbury's and lidl this afternoon after the roads had sort of cleared.

Lidl does have OJ to december, thanks Cloud! But we realised that grapefruit juice appears impossible to buy nowadays. Which was a bit odd. We thought it was just sainsbury's.

PestymcPestFace · 02/02/2019 18:12

Pomellos have just come into season. Presumably mass grapefruit season is the same. So juice should be in the shops soon. Some stuff is still vaguely seasonal.

We will be making candied peel tomorrow Grin

My in-laws are really putting their heads in the sand. They voted Remain but simply won't look at the possibility that things might go badly wrong. Not because they don't believe it but because they can't face it.
Dh (who was pretty reluctant too for the same reason) has put together a bag of stuff. To kind of get them started- mil is a super practical person and a great cook when she's not being hyper emotional.
As follows: bog roll, tin of potatoes; 2 tinned Fray Bentos pies, tin of mandarins, porridge oats, flour to make chapatis (mil special); chocolate ; tub of powdered milk. The point being to get them thinking rather than give them all they need.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/02/2019 18:24

That's a good idea Bellini.

Long life Grapefruit juice never used to be seasonal.

We are making one of dhs specialities tomorrow - seville orange liqueur. It tastes like alcoholic marmalade!

colouringinpro · 02/02/2019 18:40

Sorry if already posted, but excellent list from Jack Monroe

I've done a couple of huge weekly shops including some prepping stuff, mostly doubling up on non food essentials and dried goods. Tiny freezer and no room for another so that's a problem.

bellinisurge · 02/02/2019 20:44

Don't spend money on another freezer. Look at shelf stable alternatives. Look at vegan foods for protein alternatives- jack fruit, say. Or silken tofu.

ChiaraRimini · 02/02/2019 20:53

Thanks Bellini. Planning to get in soya mince as it's a great replacement for beef mince. Need to get the kids used to more non meat meals as well. Never tried jackfruit, yet...

PestymcPestFace · 02/02/2019 20:57

Don't buy jack fruit, it has very low protein. Only 1.7g per 100g, I was also hood winked.

Well buy it coz it tastes ok but don't rely on it for protein.

bellinisurge · 02/02/2019 21:04

I agree but it gives a nice taste on top of rather dull soya mince.

PestymcPestFace · 02/02/2019 21:15

Soy mince has to be re hydrated in red wine. Hmm

This, of course, is not a problem for the average MNer

siblingrevelryagain · 03/02/2019 07:09

Tesco’s lentilles vertes, or puy lentils are a great sub for mince in a Bolognese sauce-google ‘eat well for less bolognese’.

ivykaty44 · 03/02/2019 07:18

Not being funny
A pork sausage has 3grams on average of protein with over 7grams if saturated fat and 20grams if fat - think of the cholesterol

I doubt anyone would mention the nutritional lacking of a sausage where the nutritional benefits of a jackfruit are plentiful but you fail to mention there is less that 0.2g of saturated fat or the potassium, vitamin C, vitamin B6

PerverseConverse · 03/02/2019 08:26

I've got an empty drawer in my bed base that I can use to store crisps. They take up so much room and with 3 children a pack of 6 doesn't last long.

Dd1 is a Nutella fiend and I imagine the price of that will sky rocket. She'll happily eat store branded but the price of that will increase too.

Red split lentils are also great to pad out any mince/ stew/ soup type dish, and high in protein. They disintegrate but thicken so they are not obvious for those with fussy children.

VanillaSugarr · 03/02/2019 09:10

I am going to make garlic butter rolls which you wrap in clingfilm and freeze. You just slice off what you want to use as and when. The same for cookie dough mix.

FoodologistGirl · 03/02/2019 09:26

Long time lurker on this and the other thread. I’ve been (forward purchasing) stocking up since before Christmas and although I can cook well (written 2 budget cookbooks), and my husband says I can make something out of nothing, (I think he’s talking about my cooking) if the shops are bare of essentials we’re gonna be in trouble. I’ve been thinking that when it snows the first thing to go is the milk and bread. So have a few packets of bread flour and tins of yeast, frozen, powdered and UHT milk. Then started working of tinned, jar and packet ingredients including oils, vinegars, herbs, spices and stock cubes. I’ve frozen a few chickens that’ll make a few meals each. Some bacon, sausages and mince. Plus dried meats like chorizo keep well if not opened. Salted butter will keep for ages in the fridge but frozen some too along with milk and cheese. I’ve also frozen batches of fresh veg and homemade sauces, Thai green curry, peri peri etc. And chopped and cooked onions and celery for risotto and stew bases. Experimenting with frozen eggs (ok) and freezing chillies, limes & lemon slices, garlic and ginger. (No way am I going back to a 70s diet) hidden away a large tin of sweets and chocolates too. Husband was sceptical at first, but as soon as he heard the army are stockpiling he’s got onboard. I’ve given him the job of making sure we have enough fuel just in case. I figure you have car and house insurance, this is just another insurance but you get to eat this one. Or give to food bank if you want. As I’ve been stocking since Nov. I can’t see that I’ve caused panic as the shops will just restock now. It’ll be the people rushing around nearer deadline that’ll cause widescale problems. I don’t intend to be that person fighting over the last onion.

BlackeyedGruesome · 03/02/2019 09:35

I need to get the boy new trainers him having ruined his second pair this school year. I am going to pick up a couple of pairs in the next couple of sizes and do a forward purchase shop as well.

BlackeyedGruesome · 03/02/2019 09:37

And yes milk is my worry but I just do not have space to freeze milk, hate uht so have opted for powdered. Will have to find alternative sources of calcium.

PerverseConverse · 03/02/2019 09:48

@bellinisurge I think Justyna needs to come to this thread and read your advice. Marmalade, Diet Pepsi and shampoo isn't going to keep her going for even a day.
