Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

Perverse I put horseradish sauce instead of mustard, but use yellow mustard powder if using mustard as it brings out the flavour of the cheese

PerverseConverse · 01/02/2019 20:11

Thanks both, sounds like it's experiment time Smile

I have about 4 store cupboard meals I make and have stocked up on the ingredients so that’s 4 meals a week for a few weeks that I don’t have to worry about

NoraButty · 01/02/2019 20:45

None of us at home are keen on frozen veg and we’ve got limited freezer space anyway so I’m going to stock up on sauerkraut and red cabbage as that will get eaten. They both have good health benefits.

Thinking of freezing fresh orange rather than getting long life too, just thinking it will have more vitamins. I know it will take up valuable space but it’ll satisfy that ‘fresh’ craving.

Home bargains has some of that pancake mix in a shaker in stock that you just add milk too, pretty sure other supermarkets do similar. That and a jif lemon might make a nice treat and they both have good a shelf life.

Also, Asda do plate cherry/apple pies for less than a pound. Probably contain more sugar than fruit but they’re freezable and are very flat.

ivykaty44 · 01/02/2019 20:57

Someone was explaining to me recently that the only sauerkraut they could find that wasn’t pasteurised was at Waitrose- completely negating the nutritional value

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/02/2019 21:09

I was quite grateful today that it didn't matter that we couldn't go shopping because of the snow. I was able to make bread. Tomorrow night will be dubious unlabelled freezer dinner.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/02/2019 21:10

about quarter to half a teaspoon of dried english mustard powder into maracroni cheese.
It does really work. (thanks for the reminder it needs to go on my list)

AntheaGreenfern · 01/02/2019 21:12

The cheapest sort of OJ (comminuted?) apparently has higher amounts of phytonutrients due to the pulp and skin being mashed in.

AntheaGreenfern · 01/02/2019 21:14

Frozen cherries can make a nice fruit crumble.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/02/2019 21:15

Frozen veg often has more nutritional content than non-frozen as it's frozen so soon after being picked that it retains it's just-picked nutritional value.

We normally only have frozen peas and green beans, but I've got a large selection now! I'd rather have access to some veg than none.

Dd has gone in the last month from eye rolling and humouring me...to asking me for specific items today!

She's only 17 (18 this month) so tbh I understand as she's never really experienced shortages. Anyone over 30 I am having less and less patience with!

The smoked sausage and pepperoni are things dd will eat and she's even agreed to help by putting tins/packets on top of our high cupboards for me (I'm a short arse of 5'2" even with a step ladder I struggle - she's over 6' with long arms so easier for her)

I'm TRYING not to freak at the cost of my shop this week. It doesn't contain ANYTHING We won't use even if "eventually". On hold with sainsburys now who are "experiencing an unusually high volume of calls" (I call about this time every week as for last 5 months it can't cope with my bank card).

Added to this weeks "stash"
cous cous 1kg (normally only order 500g)
Smoked cheese
Cereal bars
Custard
Extra pesto
Choc spread
Peanut butter
Jam
Instant mash
Tinned peaches
Tinned pineapple
Extra olives
Extra crisps
Extra water
Rennies (the slight change to normal diet might upset stomachs - plus the stress!)
Extra shampoo
Extra shower gel
Extra kitchen roll
Extra loo roll (though I'm thinking of asking dd to go to Aldi and get a big pack of whatever 2 ply they have. Our loo can't cope with luxury stuff 😂)

Anyone familiar with Amazon renova loo roll?

"Unilever owns Ben and Jerry’s! Won’t be buying that any more" that's a new one on me. What's wrong with unilever? I know about nestle and Cadbury

"Does anyone know what kind of mustard goes into macaroni cheese?" For everything else I like French mustard but for this I like English. Just my personal preference.

"so I’m going to stock up on sauerkraut and red cabbage" good call dd won't eat but I will so that'll leave other veggies for her.

"Thinking of freezing fresh orange rather than getting long life too, just thinking it will have more vitamins. I know it will take up valuable space but it’ll satisfy that ‘fresh’ craving." You might be surprised - until opened the fresh apple juice I get has about a months date on it. Once opened has to be used in 3 days but I suspect that's probably true for long life stuff too.

borntobequiet · 01/02/2019 21:30

Graphista I just disapprove of Unilever on principle, because it’s a giant company and has taken over so many brands. Whether that’s a sound principle or otherwise, I don’t know.
I also refuse to shop in Boots or M&S on account of a 30 year old grudge I bear on account of poor customer service.

Graphista · 01/02/2019 21:35

Rightio well we all have reasons for such decisions. Fair enough.

I mentioned on another thread debating joining Amazon prime in order to use the pantry and I mentioned I'm not exactly sure though how it works. I did get a brief reply but I'm still not completely sure.

To be honest the fact that "scandal" is on prime video does make it appealing Grin

cloudtree · 01/02/2019 22:25

The bog standard orange juice in cartons (not refrigerated) is perfectly nice and has December dates on it atm so a really good thing to stock up on to get vitamin c. Ok it’s not as nice as the freshly squeezed stuff but then it’s 55p rather than £2.99

Burpsandfustles · 01/02/2019 22:42

Not sure how I stumbled in here but the title intrigued me Grin

I have 30 packs of 16 rolls of waitrose loo roll stashed away around the house.
It's my first lurch towards forward buying.

I'm loving this thread and the gentle stoic /pragmatic attitudes here...
It reeks of blitz spirit.... I'm almost inspired to go and make jam tomorow and sow seeds.

What I will do is clean out dirty old never used cupboard in kitchen and create my own brexit cupboard. I'll get some kg bags of pasta in there and that packet brown hash stuff.
I'm sure people have mentioned spicier snacks in case leccy fails.. Eg noodle packets Asian flavours . Ocado has some 50p reduced form 80p

bluechameleon · 01/02/2019 22:44

ivykaty what are your 4 store cupboard meals please? I can't think of any my fussy 4 year old will eat. Does anyone else have good ideas of how to handle fussy children? I'm thinking I will just have to buy lots of the few long life foods he will eat. And accept he might need to get many of his calories from less healthy sources.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/02/2019 22:45

where are you getting December dates from Cloud? My sainsbury's oj is september still.

ivykaty44 · 01/02/2019 23:04

Pasta with a tomato, anchovy & olive sauce
Garlic prawn noddles, use frozen prawns, jar garlic & ginger, jar chilliest and friend noddles, frozen vegetables
Chickpea curry, frozen cauliflowr if available is added and lentils
Tinned bean chilli

AntheaGreenfern · 01/02/2019 23:26

4 year old was a tricky age here. Just hard to negotiate with.

But the plus side was they can change their mind quite rapidly, say if a friend likes something, or if it appears repeatedly and they see others eating it.

VanillaSugarr · 01/02/2019 23:27

Having watched alistair Campbell on The Last Leg, I don’t think I have enough Confused

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/02/2019 23:27

one of our store cupboard meals:
basmati rice
tin chopped tomatoes,
tin tuna
tin peas
tin sweetcorn
mix together
flavour with salt and ground white pepper.

it is better than it sounds but not everyones idea of food. Grin but the children eat it.

I need to think of more ideas.

though I suppose past and stir in sauce and tinned veg would work too.

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/02/2019 23:29

kids hate couscous but I may try them again.

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/02/2019 23:31

I am just wondering how grim food would be after a month and having eaten the way through the freezer contents.

and whether you can make toast really slowly with a magnifying glass?

AntheaGreenfern · 01/02/2019 23:32

I wouldn't believe Alastair Campbell telling me anything tbh.

bluechameleon · 01/02/2019 23:35

Those ideas all sound tasty and I may well use them for the rest of us. 4yo won't eat anything in a sauce unfortunately, only completely separate elements which he eats one at a time (e.g. all the bacon then all the pasta then all the cheese while the rest of us enjoy pasta carbonara).
