My heart would break if my anxiety would let it.

Can't believe it.

Auntiepatricia not talking about it won't make it go away. If your are in the UK, write to your MP and tell them the GFA must not be threatened. From your point of view, threatening The GFA is giving -to use your words - many bored, stupid, violent, brainwashed, nothing to lose piece of shits in NI 'something to do'.

I don’t pretend to understand all the ins and outs of Irish history

It really is not all that complex and wrt to the north it is very much so British history too. No excuse for the British not knowing their own history especially when it is having such an impact on current affairs.

I wrote the above sentence to cover myself if I inadvertently said something insulting. I was a child and teenager during the Troubles and remember lots of the news items and how it affected my understanding of ROI and NI growing up. I just know that lots of things said innocently can be triggering to others with a different life experience.

I just wanted to express my sadness that this is happening, particularly as May is apparently nibbling at the Peace Agreement to stay on message for the various factions she cowtows to.

Plenty of coverage on radio/TV & newspapers in the Republic.

Janleverton · 21/01/2019 23:09

I heard about the alerts on R4.

I am southern English remained but grew up with news in the background always (journalist father). And then went to university in Scotland where I saw an orange march and lots of NI students.

I don’t see how anyone can not understand that peace in NI is fragile and needs to be nurtured and the reckless afterthought of the impact of brexit on peace is breathtakingly ignorant and frankly embarrassing. It’s all a hell of a mess, which was entirely predictable.

Thankfully the traditional 'call' was made, taken seriously the 'evacuation' carried out "just" in time. Just, and no one was hurt.

Thankfully, these New IRA 'chancers' (they couldn't give a shit about Brexit anyway it goes) are in such a minority that they were turned in within hours.

GrammarTeacher · 22/01/2019 06:14

Their leaders might not give a shit about Brexit however, the being ignored and neglected by the government in London will be an excellent recruitment tool. It's not so much Leave or Remain that's the issue there (although of course NI voted strongly to remain), it's the complete lack of awareness and consideration and the pandering to the DUP (who don't even represent most of their 'side'). People seem to readily believe that people voted leave as a cry to be heard (which was ridiculous - it wasn't the time to vote against Cameron) and yet aren't ready to believe there will potentially be a similar reaction of rage in Northern Ireland. Nobody likes feeling unheard.
If Brexit goes ahead (I live in hope) it will be a difficult time for the union as a whole. This country is far from united and that was the problem not the EU.

It's not so much Leave or Remain that's the issue there
It’s the affect of leaving on the GFA that is the issue. Both ‘the border’ being reimposed and the loss of our rights that are enshrined within the GFA, including that of a border poll.
West Derry is just minutes from the so-called border. We would walk to relatives in ROI over fields to avoid the checkpoints, sometimes, even as quite young children. The imposition of a border there, however soft (though I don’t believe it would ultimately be soft because people will utterly reject “trusted trader” status and cameras) will impact lives in Derry more than any other city.

Apileofballyhoo · 22/01/2019 15:53

Somerville, can you explain how the border poll is under threat? Is it because once the GFA is broken in one aspect it opens the door to every aspect being broken?

Somerville · 22/01/2019 16:09

Is it because once the GFA is broken in one aspect it opens the door to every aspect being broken?

Yes, exactly. Which is the working supposition for why the DUP are so gung-ho on a hard Brexit.

Apileofballyhoo · 22/01/2019 16:11

Ok. GRMA.
