What impact would no deal have on your personal circumstances? What is your personal biggest worry?
In my case it is medication which is my biggest concern.

We are the UK.

What on earth does this actually mean?

This press release shows the problems - in the notes
www.doverport.co.uk/about/news/dover-ready-to-welcome-customers-into-the-future/13420/

flatulencebythebucket · 18/01/2019 14:41

The supermarkets will ALL use it as an excuse to raise prices whetever happens, however I will just buy less.

Other than that, I hope we get a no deal Brexit.

SalrycLuxx · 18/01/2019 14:42

SalrycLuxx I think you will find that the min salary would apply going forward,

Link please. There are plenty of Aussies and Americans who have been merrily deported because they didn’t earn enough. In a hard Brexit there is currently nothin in law to protect EU citizens from the same fate.

And the hostile environment it the governments much vaunted and well publicised attitude and approach to immigration - making it unpleasant for anyone that deem unworthy or who suddenly don’t ‘fit’ into new rules. Windrush, anyone?

SalrycLuxx · 18/01/2019 14:43

We are the UK.

Yes. And?

Hesta54 · 18/01/2019 14:48

SalrycLuxx I think you will find with the number of foreign people trying to come and live and work here that the U.K. is one of the most open and friendly places to be

Hesta54 · 18/01/2019 14:49

SalrycLuxx Surely you expect this country to have some rules and controls over irs immigration?

Hesta54 · 18/01/2019 14:53

freezinguplands Fail to prepare, prepare to fail, they would to criticised if they didn’t plan and criticised when they do

SalrycLuxx · 18/01/2019 15:08

Surely you expect this country to have some rules and controls over irs immigration?

Indeed I do - but that wasn’t the question. The question was why would EU nurses leave, and I answered it. If you are able to rebut the facts underpinning that answer (with hard facts based on existing law preferably) then please do.

the UK is one of the most open and friendly places to be

In terms of the attitude of the general populace in the cosmopolitan areas, I’d entirely agree. But then I dig a little and realise that EU citizens are starting to have trouble renting homes because of the hostile environment policies that have turned landlords into border guards on pain of imprisonment. So apparently we like them well enough - just not enough to go to the efforts needed to let them stay in our properties. Then there’s the fun of having your bank accounts closed because you’ve been incorrectly labelled by a bank as ‘irregular’ - note that a bank can close accounts for any reason and there is no comeback. Then there’s the way perfectly legal immigrants (windrush now, replace with EU immigrants in 30 years time) are denied healthcare, in part because the Home Office decided to destroy all the landing cards (aka the record of arrivals which would show whoncame over during that entirely legitimate influx). Inaccuracy of remaining records is also a problem - but do note that the Home Office got itself a data protection exemption in the new legislation meaning that you can’t even check whether the data held by the government is correct, and so you have no hope of getting it corrected.

So, at a state level, I’d have to disagree with our assertion.

freezinguplands · 18/01/2019 15:10

I'm not critizing the limited preparations that the government is making for the no deal strategy it is currently following, I am pointing out that the government plainly thinks that disruptions at ports are possible as they are planning for them.
Currently there are no disruptions, the only reason to start stress testing is because you think things will change. The government isn't wrong, things will change. So suggesting there will be no hold ups seems a little naive.

Sadly the port authorities aren't the only people in this equation. Of course the PORT can handle it, they are doing it now. The issue is customs and security both of which are NOT ready.
HMRC computer system cannot cope with the increased volume of 'paperwork' and will be months late at best, and security screening of all vehicles will be necessary to a greater degree than now.
Saying that one small aspect of this is 'ready' is no good as the whole lot has to work seamlessly. Processing paperwork might take 2 seconds but if the queue to get to the kiosk takes 3 hours the system won't work.

nutellalove · 18/01/2019 15:16

If house prices drop I may actually be able to afford to buy a house which is currently slightly out of budget

bellinisurge · 18/01/2019 15:17

Food problems at the supermarket affects everyone.

Eyewhisker · 18/01/2019 15:17

Hesta. EU migration has dropped off sharply and many have left as Brexit was a big wake-up call. It was a clear message that ‘you are not welcome here’. My firm has noticed a huge drop in the number of EU applicants as why would you move to the UK when so many people seem to want to make themselves and the country poorer just so they hear fewer foreign accents?

The UK used to be perceived as welcoming and tolerant. However, that perception seems to have been mistaken.

Bread will probably not rise 800%. However food prices are likely to rise because of a further drop in the pound and rise in costs due to tariffs/delays at ports leading to increased transport costs.

Hesta54 · 18/01/2019 15:24

SalrycLuxx Is it wrong to check people’s rights to be in this country ? I have not heard of any EU citizens having trouble renting houses, if anything they find it easier than local people,
Windrush generation is wrong, but let’s not pretend that other countries don’t make similar mistakes or have been equally hard on immigrants.

Hesta54 · 18/01/2019 15:32

Eyewhisker Why do you mistake wanting better and more controls on immigration as saying we don’t want them here, why do you not have U.K. applicants, why rely on EU labour?
Why is there so much scaremongering then ? Food prices has risen over many years for many different reasons, can you guarantee me that food prices will never rise if we stay in the EU, because they have been

Ta1kinPeace · 18/01/2019 15:33

Hesta54
If you think the UK is welcoming to foreigners you are UTTERLY deluded.
I only became British a few years ago.
UKBA and the Home Office are utterly wedded to their hostile environment

The UK has the most expensive visas in the world.
It locks up and deports people with full legal right to remain.
it blocks from entry people with UK citizenship and right of entry
It harasses the vulnerable and the sick
It ignores international law on deportation
It deliberately keeps refugees in limbo for years

The UK is a DEEPLY unwelcoming country
And Brexit will leave it even more out on a limb.

Hesta54 · 18/01/2019 15:35

1tisILeClerc Yes there maybe delays for a while but after awhile they will get through, much the same as when the French go on strike at the ports or when the farmers decide to block the ports.

DarienGap · 18/01/2019 15:37

If we're so unwelcoming, why do so many people still want to come here?

Ta1kinPeace · 18/01/2019 15:39

Hesta54
Yes there maybe delays for a while but after awhile they will get through
Which bit of just in time supply chains do you not understand.
A day late = empty shops and closed factories.
Why would businesses put up with that when they can move their production to the continent? (as Phillips has just done)

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 18/01/2019 15:40

My personal worry is that those with a lot of money eg Jacob Rees-Mogg have stashed it outside if the UK “to mitigate the risks of a no deal Brexit”.

That tells me that the economy is expected to tank if we crash out with no deal.

Personally the implications of this for society is worrying, the veneer around civilised behaviour by communities is paper thin and it won’t take much for that veneer to slip.

SalrycLuxx · 18/01/2019 15:43

I have not heard of any EU citizens having trouble renting houses

Then I recommend you read a wider range of news sources. It is well documented. Unless of course you are basing your position purely on anecdotal evidence and your own perceptions?

I also note that I have already stated that I do expect some rules and controls, so I fail to see why you repeat that point. It doesn’t rebut anything I have set out.

Also - why are you suggesting that remainers think that remaining will guarantee that the Uk is frozen in aspic and prices will never rise/nothing will ever change? That is not the remain position at all, but is a straw man argument that various posters keep trying to set up in order to try and attack/ridicule the remain position. Presumably because they are unable to ‘win’ when arguing against actual remainder points such as “if you implement tariffs and border checks the cost of imports will inevitably rise, and if you do it without a transition period or any real planning that price rise is likely to be sudden and significant”.

Ta1kinPeace · 18/01/2019 15:43

Since the vote they don't in nearly as large numbers.

But for the high skilled - English is the language of Business and Science so the UK punched above its weight.

For the mid skilled - getting to learn English in England while working was a real bonus.

For the low skilled - earn £75 a week in rural Bulgaria or £400 a week in rural UK, save up and live like a king in Bulgaria. No brainer.

The UK has the most flexible labour laws in the EU so seasonal and temporary work here was easier to get than in eg France.
But without FOM they will stay elsewhere.
