Welcome to 2019.

Bit of a different thread starter; instead of me speculating what are your predictions for the coming year politically? Will be interesting to see how people are viewing things right now.

How is Brexit going to play out?

Who is going to be framed as the scapegoat for whatever scenario you think likely?

What are going to be the biggest political issues that the media / politicians push (as opposed to what the real issues are)?

What is going to be the most shocking thing that will happen either here or abroad?

What will happen with Trump?

Who will be the next Tory leader and when?

Whats on the cards for the various political parties in general?

This happy new year message wasn't a parody:

Donald J. Trump**@realDonaldTrump
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE HATERS AND THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA!
2019 WILL BE A FANTASTIC YEAR FOR THOSE NOT SUFFERING FROM TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.
JUST CALM DOWN AND ENJOY THE RIDE, GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING FOR OUR COUNTRY!

I am not daring to hope until May does decide to revoke A50.

Not solely up to May anymore, it’s up to Parliament.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/01/2019 23:24

It is unclear what legal power, if any, the HoC has to Revoke

GD12 · 02/01/2019 23:26

As an aside, as that family member was telling us about the meds stockpiling (over New Years day dinner) another started coming out with "they need us more than them and millennium bug". I couldn't belive it!

Sostenueto · 02/01/2019 23:27

I have feeling its more to do with expense rather than brexit. They also don't stock all dosages available because of shelf life. My Creon is a high dosage not very common to give. So, if there's not that many in your area needing that dosage or that medication the chemist may have to ring round to get it from another branch. They also change brands a lot, again because of cost. ( My doctor told me that.)

I missed this on NYE:

According to Maugham the government has formally recognised that MPs can simply direct it to revoke art 50.

It is the means that is not yet clear, whether it needs an act of Parliament or simply a vote is yet to be determined.

How to tell when someone wants to be the next Tory leader ....

Until the HoC know how to do this, they can't do it.
Until they HoC want to do this, the won't

thecatfromjapan · 02/01/2019 23:47

Hello Tatiana.

I wanted to reply to you via PM but don't seem able to access that function.

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry to hear you lost someone. I don't want to write any more here - it feels too much as though I might inadvertently cause hurt rather than offer a hand-hold. So, all love to you - and wishing you s wonderful New Year.

TatianaLarina · 02/01/2019 23:48

But if they need to do it they’ll find out pdq.

The news came in shortly before Christmas. It needs to be determined in the next month, preferably two weeks.

The HoC is more immediately focused on how to force a delay, according to reports. The next question is how to force a revoke if necessary.

thecatfromjapan · 02/01/2019 23:51

I am praying for a revoke.

I came across an interview with Ken Clarke staring he'd vote for May's Deal. I actually think that it's going to squeak through. ☹️

TatianaLarina · 02/01/2019 23:53

Oh cross post.

Love to you Japan and Happy New Year and all. xxx

TatianaLarina · 02/01/2019 23:54

I actually think that it's going to squeak through

Yeah I think it may well do. The intimidation tactics are totally working.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/01/2019 23:56

As long as Corbyn is against Revoke (or a PV), it is difficult to see how to get the votes 316 MPs (a majority of those eligible to vote)

Very few Tories would vote to Revoke if May is against
and if she isn't, she can revoke herself.

MissMalice · 02/01/2019 23:57

Ken Clarke said from the off he’d vote for May’s deal - that’s not new news.

thecatfromjapan · 03/01/2019 00:00

Ah, I'm late to the party with Mr

TatianaLarina · 03/01/2019 00:03

It really depends on the situation.

Excl: Rival ministers accuse Sajid Javid of ‘losing the plot’ after he starts referring to himself as “The Sajid” in meetings - but allies blame plot to discredit him
www.thesun.co.uk/news/8106523/sajid-javid-power-gone-to-his-head/amp/?__twitter_impression=true
'HE'S LOSING THE PLOT' Home Secretary Sajid Javid refers to himself as ‘The Sajid’ during meetings with ministers
One Cabinet source claimed that Home Secretary uses phrases like 'The Saj will sort that out' and 'just you watch what The Sajid is going to do'

This is a man who cuts short his holiday with his family because there is a 'migrant crisis' of 200 people and is spouting about asylum seekers being fakers so he can win the Tory Leadership.

The stuff about The Saj is hilarious and believeable because of his extreme actions and rhetoric.

Honestly they are all turning into ultra swivel eyed loons.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/01/2019 00:04

Assuming the WA is voted down mid-Jan, there are strong suggestions that the HoC would be invited to vote on each alternative in turn.
So far, I haven't heard any whisper that May would allow an HoC vote on Revoke, or that there is even any demand yet

The HoC can vote against No Deal,
but then they have to put something in its place, or No Deal is the inevitable legal consequence as the 2 years of A50 ends.

Cold mathematics at this stage means No Deal is slightly more likely than anything else.
Commentators in the EU rate the chance of Revoke at only about 10 or 20%

Corbyn has been the cynical roadblock all along
If he were to support Revoke, suddenly the chances would look good.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/01/2019 00:05

The Saj sounds like ego out of control

RedToothBrush · 03/01/2019 00:08

Even if its a lie its hilarious cos that means there are Cabinet ministers dreaming up ever increasing mad stories about their rivals to discredit them. The longer May holds on, the more crazy they will go.

Brexiters trumped by Trump

Trump administration current veto on WTO appointments will make WTO rulings post-2019 impossible for lack of quorum, until lifted

Brexiteers can’t afford to bet on the WTO

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/brexiteers-can-t-afford-to-bet-on-the-wto-zvsc898tc

If Britain leaves the EU without a deal this year, there are many reasons why the World Trade Organisation won’t help

BigChocFrenzy · 03/01/2019 00:12

Îf it's a lie, it's an astonishingly blatant and specific one - "the Saj"
although this Cabinet are noted for blatant lying

TatianaLarina · 03/01/2019 00:14

So far, I haven't heard any whisper that May would allow an HoC vote on Revoke, or that there is even any demand yet

It’s not up to her. But there’s certainly no demand yet.

If the WA were voted down the next things on the agenda are votes on the options and extension. That’s what cross party talks are apparently currently focusing on. The grounds for the extension would determine what happens next.
