We are STILL on collision course for no deal.

Christmas is here, and whilst we might appreciate the respite from Brexit News, its really a luxury we can't afford.

The meaningful vote is scheduled for January.

Chaos is scheduled for shortly after.

I wish you all a happy and enjoyable Christmas.

umpteen Multinationals like Amazon, Ford etc pay taxes on profits for their subsidiaries / branches in the land where those subsidiaries are based

The EU demanded any subsidiaries that are allowed to do EU business post-brexit should be genuine, not just a door with a name plate.
So, seems likely that paying tax locally would be one requirement of being genuine.

However, I can't find a reliable source to confirm this.

The financial services sector in 2016 produced about 11% of UK GDP and also about 11% of UK total tax receipts

www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/business/economic-research-and-information/Pages/economic-statistics.aspx

I wonder what % of that sector was EU business, which could potentially be lost

All that kind of business, btw, counts as the elite who the Brexiters want to get rid of, along with the Citizens of Nowhere working there

RedToothBrush · 20/12/2018 21:56

OK this SERIOUSLY pisses me off.

This is a Labour press release:
labour.org.uk/press/government-introduce-drone-exclusion-zone-around-airports-andy-mcdonald/
The Government should introduce a drone exclusion zone around airports

And what's the actual law?

It is illegal to fly a drone within 1km of an airport or airfield boundary and flying above 400ft (120m) - which increases the risk of a collision with a manned aircraft - is also banned.

Endangering the safety of an aircraft is a criminal offence which can carry a prison sentence of five years.

So Labour are actively each thick as bricks or politicking by telling outright blantant lies.

I'm past caring which it is. It's disgusting either way.

Wow, red in 24 hours
Maybe the UK contingency plans will be issued shortly.

Sostenueto · 20/12/2018 21:59

My dgd is going for an interview in the morning in the hopes of becoming a young trustee ( she's 16) with a county organisation that coordinates with several charities in the county that deal with needs of the young, old, deprived, homeless, mental health issues, disabled, educational needs etc. This is as a volunteer. She has prepared a list of what she is most interested in and how to help the charities get funding etc. She's even trying to construct a list of effects of brexit and strategies to combat them! ( she is a firm remainer). Hope they are impressed with her! Perhaps she could help TM out?

Thegirlinthefireplace · 20/12/2018 22:00

Surprised there's no comment on the Guardian article with YouGov polling. It's given peoples voters a new lease of life.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2018 22:03

I could understand if they wanted to EXTEND the drone exclusion zone from 1km to x km,

but the logical deduction is that they didn't know there is one already
and didn't bother to check, although it is the kind of law one should expect might already exist

Too eager to show they are clever
Too lazy to put in the research that enables one to actually be clever and do clever things.

lonelyplanetmum · 20/12/2018 22:04

Pre 18 December -“in the unlikely event of no deal...”

20 December “in the event of no deal”.

25 December? in the likely event of no deal...?

lonelyplanetmum · 20/12/2018 22:07

Too lazy to put in the research

I googled it. Goggle's third suggestion was the CAA website.

It took less than 30 seconds to find the relevant bit on drones.

RedToothBrush · 20/12/2018 22:08

120,000 passengers were due to fly out of Gatwick today. They didn't.
It is due to be busier tomorrow.

Another drone has been spotted in the last hour.

DH has just back from London (he has been on a planned trip to his London office today). He said the train was unusually rammed. He sat in first class as they declassified it. He left after rush hour.

Google not goggle!

Grinchly · 20/12/2018 22:10

Yep, and a BALPA ( pilot's union) rep was on R4 Today prog setting out the 1km exclusion zone and their ongoing demands to have it extended to 5 km.

RedToothBrush · 20/12/2018 22:11

News at Ten is showing how The Netherlands have trained birds of prey to take out drones.

FFS.

Flowers bovril and Flowers quietrebel and Flowers for everyone. My DH and I are sitting here in SE Ireland, at times we are so angry about what is being done to the people of the UK, and at times we are so upset for you all. I can't imagine the level of worry and stress if we actually lived in the UK. Sometimes I am afraid DS will think we are having a massive row when he hears all the shouting we do. It's horrific to watch, so I can't imagine what it's like to be in it. Though we are very worried ourselves about NI.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2018 22:11

Have you got a link or the stats, girl

I've only seen this on Britain Elects, how the Remain lead has widened to 8%,
now 54% vs 46%

RedToothBrush · 20/12/2018 22:12

I didn't even google. I looked on the BBC News website. It was in the news article on the story.

OP posts:
Sostenueto · 20/12/2018 22:14

This from a disability newsfeed
police force has admitted passing video footage and other information about disabled anti-fracking protesters to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Disability News Service (DNS) reported last week that forces including Lancashire police had been accused of repeatedly targeting and assaulting disabled people involved in peaceful anti-fracking protests.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2018 22:15

Also, that NI polling shows 65% of the people there would welcome a special status for NI
keeping very close ties to the EU and remaining in the SM+CU

Sostenueto · 20/12/2018 22:15

I'd better be careful when I go out with a banner then!

lonelyplanetmum · 20/12/2018 22:17

I always check the BBC now- don't trust em.

With the drones what I find scary is how hard is it to find out who's doing it. These things can't last longer than 20 minutes can they? What's the radius of the controller?

Also if there are more than one surely each one is being taken away so police could perhaps trace where it was bought etc?

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2018 22:22

The operator(s) bought or has been supplied with higher grade drones drones, which could have greater speed, endurance and range

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/dec/20/tens-of-thousands-of-passengers-stranded-by-gatwick-airport-drones

described as “substantial” by the government, “commercial” by the transport secretary, and “industrial” by police,

lonelyplanetmum · 20/12/2018 22:23

Surely higher grade drones have limited sources?

Grinchly · 20/12/2018 22:25

Radius of several miles lonely lots of interesting info on the pprune website.
The theory is it's one or several operators with a number of machines, who are moving location.
The whole thing is very puzzling now though.

Grinchly · 20/12/2018 22:27

Indeed and I imagine that will be fuelling lines of enquiry. In the meantime the damn things are flying around with seeming impunity, and news at ten saying far more sightings now during the day than had previously been confirmed.

lonelyplanetmum · 20/12/2018 22:28

and at times we are so upset for you all

Thank you* very much for sharing our upset Apileofballyhoo*. At least you haven't forgotten us, even if our government have. Hopefully you can explain to your DC that is not arguing, just politics.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2018 22:28

So long as the next ones aren't military drones - unless they are ours !

Scary what drones are available and have already been used by terrorists to kill.

is this what could happen next ?

In fact is this just a test run, or to demonstrate before ransom demands ?

https://www.dw.com/en/what-defense-is-there-against-off-the-shelf-drone-weapons/a-44970742

A failed assassination attempt on Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduroo^ on August 4, 2018, reminded us once again how easy it seems to be to turn off-the-shelf drones into potentially lethal weapons.

In this case, the perpetrators had loaded two drones with 1 kilogram (2.2 lb) of explosives each.
Then they apparently tried to fly them as close as possible to the president while he was addressing a military parade.

Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said that the military had "electronically" diverted one drone from its course.
The second one crashed against the wall of a building blocks away from the actual target.

Armed groups such as the terrorist militia "Islamic State" (IS) pioneered the use of small drones to drop hand or mortar grenades with great precision on their victims.
IS fighters used improvised weapons of this kind during the Battle of Mosul in April 2017.

Such types of model aircraft usually cost less than 1,000 euros ($1160).
Official Iraqi armed forces also later used the same method.
