Brexit

Why is Corbyn not trying to topple May now?

As a Leaver and a Conservative party voter I am wondering why JC isn't doing something like this. I would hate him in power but is it because he knows it would be another hung parliament or that he doesn't want to actually lead the country. He just wants to protest.

If I was Labour I would want someone like Stammer or Cooper to balance the more drastic views of JC, DA or JM but they don't seem for moving.

Just interested - don't want it to happen btw!

Because Brexit is basically unworkable and he doesn't want to have to deal with it.

Corbin is very anti EU, unlike most of his young leftie fan base, so he's just keeping his head down as far as I can see. It's an absolute shambles.

keiratwiceknightly · 13/12/2018 17:07

Because:-

  1. He doesn't want to have to navigate Brexit. Whichever party gets that one is knackered for years.
  2. He can't really admit to his true Brexit position as that would alienate too many in his party. So we know, and he knows that we know, but no one says it. So that's ok.
  3. He's lazy/a coward.

I'll never forgive him or the PLP for not providing an opposition at this most vital of times.

At work we often get people - especially the senior management trashing people's ideas yet have no real alternative. I wonder if this is what is happening here?

Even if Labour got in they would spend as long as they could blaming TM for the woes of the country. To be fair ALL parties do this as long as they can get away with it.

"He can't really admit to his true Brexit position as that would alienate too many in his party. So we know, and he knows that we know, but no one says it. So that's ok"

Totally agree with you....

He doesn't have the chops for it.

sunglasses123 · 13/12/2018 17:15

Honestly - I blame Cameron for this. We should never have been able to vote like this knowing that we didn't have a Thatcher to fight our corner. Sorry - but she would have gone in fighting for the UK.

Why didn't they have a cross party group with hand picked tough big beasts to fight our corner collectively. Instead we have JC sniping at May for his own ends. He doesn't want the role, doesn't want to really add anything positive just wants to protest.

Momentum would eat him up.

Annandale · 13/12/2018 17:19

Thatcher would never have been advised to have the stupid referendum in the first place, and having spent years building up trade agreements based on our eu membership and influencing the eu to tack towards free trade/single market, she would never have thrown it all away for a PR stunt like Cameron did.

Corbyn wouldn't gain anything from taking over now, it's a right wing mess. But yes of course he's a lexiter too.

billysboy · 13/12/2018 17:20

You think he would grab Dianne by the hand and step up to the plate really !
He is unelectable

sunglasses123 · 13/12/2018 17:24

Billy - you say that and I hope you are right but he got close last time. Closer than he ever expected. I thought May had a good idea calling a GE to up her majority.

Its a good thing I am not in charge!

Now DA makes my blood run cold. Does anyone think she is fit for purpose?

"He can't really admit to his true Brexit position as that would alienate too many in his party. So we know, and he knows that we know, but no one says it. So that's ok"

So Momentum can pretend he still walks on water.

We need a decent opposition, sigh!

noodlenosefraggle · 13/12/2018 17:27

I agree there should have been a coalition of all parties to agree a Brexit plan for the 2 years. I think the problem is that even Corbyns own MP's couldn't work with him and the Tories are so divided it would have been impossible for them to agree who did what. They are all bloody dreadful.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/12/2018 17:28

Even my 24 year old fanboy son, who thought Corbyn was the next Messiah, has been thoroughly disillusioned by his lily livered dissembling. Silver linings and all that.

sunglasses123 · 13/12/2018 17:32

Its so easy spouting words and theories, everyone equal, good schools for all. The real test is when you have to actually deliver.

according to todays edition of the Times the opinion polls were 52% remain 48 % leave and despite the utter and complete shambles it is still a conservative lead albeit tiny Conservatives 39% labour 38% though I am no fan of Jeremy if he can't beat the PM with all this going on could he win anything at all ever?

Figgygal · 13/12/2018 17:35

Because he wouldn't have a clue what to do with the job or Brexit.
he was silent in the run-up to the referendum has been silent for the last few weeks other than over the leaders debate that obviously never would happen.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 13/12/2018 17:38

He hasn't got the guts. I'm a Conservative voter and continually amazed that Labour haven't ditched their greatest electoral liability. With a half decent leader they'd wiped the floor with the Tories (mind you they'd have to get their Brexit position sorted but with Steptoe out the way maybe they could do that).

sunglasses123 · 13/12/2018 17:39

Werent the opinion polls that before the last vote? Thing is there is a fashion sometimes. JC could do no wrong. He was like Father Xmas. You couldn't say a word against him without being struck down. Now its changed. No one really comes out fighting for him.

Of course there will be some who will vote Labour regardless. Diane Abbott got in because people voted for her and with a large majority. I am not going to ask why because of course in some parts of the country people will vote Conservative regardless. UKIP have had their day. So there is no centre ground party. I want a great opposition. Someone to keep everyone on their toes.

lets face it if he thought he could muster up enough support for a vote of no confidence in the govt he would do it , but he knows he cannot mange that

May has a poison chalice atm which no one wants to touch

sunglasses123 · 13/12/2018 17:42

Loki - me too. I always think if the rail workers went on strike for say more pay Corbyn would be out with them and he could be our next Prime Minister!

This.

Whoever was leading the opposition would be in the same situation

sunglasses123 · 13/12/2018 17:46

I saw him having a real go at May yesterday and thought you sound like a bitter and twisted old man with no ideas of your own trashing someone who is just trying to do what the people voted for. You don't want to come out and say what you really think. You have never had a real job and pretend to live the socialist life in Central London with your children going to grammar schools. Of course you were against it but actually it meant that they still went. You were just 'against' it.

And don't get me started on DA.

OP posts:
billysboy · 13/12/2018 17:50

With Corbyn and Dianne Abbott holding such senior positions in the labour party they will never get in

GreenEggsHamandChips · 13/12/2018 17:57

You have a conservative party being pulled apart by a remain leader whose trying to Brexit in a way that no one supports.

If labour tried to lead it would be Labour ripping itself apart because you'd have a brexiteer leader and a remain party.

At least this way they look united and labour survives

bellinisurge · 13/12/2018 17:58

The answer to your question, op is "because he's shit." There's a more subtle and complex parliamentary procedure one but it boils down to "he's shit".
