The ERG to be the grinch that stole the Tory Party Christmas who ultimately get what they deserve.

I think most of the 117 would back TM in parliament. But not many need to switch sides. Especially if DUP turn against her or at least abstain.

GD12 · 12/12/2018 21:10

It's highly unlikely 117 Torys would vote for a Labour vote as that would mean an election.

Butterymuffin · 12/12/2018 21:10

I assume though that Allen and the others are even more opposed to a hard Brexiteer getting the job than they are to May and her agreement.

BackInTime · 12/12/2018 21:11

What now Confused

BiglyBadgers · 12/12/2018 21:11

DUP more of a chance as they hate everyone pretty equally it seems.

turnipsaretheonlyveg · 12/12/2018 21:11

Maybe they thought that JRM et al would be a total disaster and given she can't get her WA through the commons would be less likely then JRM to allow a no deal?
There aren't really any good options to take at present.

TatianaLarina · 12/12/2018 21:11

Labour need to see if the DUP will come good on their pledge not to support her before they launch a no confidence motion or be sure enough Tories will join in.

Labour need to hold off until they’re sure of winning.

I don’t think it can take Arlene that much longer to twig that the backstop can’t be fixed.

borntobequiet · 12/12/2018 21:12

Good Q Backintime

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 12/12/2018 21:12

So now that this particular ploy of the ERG’s is neutralised for the next 12 months, what other methods do they have recourse to in order to derail any progress?

Hazardswan · 12/12/2018 21:12

So according to buzzfeed flow chart it's deal goes back to commons or cabinet blocks deal going to commons?

BigChocFrenzy · 12/12/2018 21:13

An HoC vote of No Confidence would be on a party basis

I know we're already deep in the realms of the unthinkable,
but it is inconceivable that any Tory MPs would vote against their own party in an NC vote
and possibly put Corbyn in No 10

If an NC happens, it'll be the DUP Fascist Loons R Us
and I hope many of their own voters abandon them, as math suggests

Butterymuffin · 12/12/2018 21:13

Bit Ground hog Day now I think? May and the DUP will want an alternative to the backstop, even when it's perfectly clear the EU will not offer one. Don't know how long they'll continue to bang their heads against that particular wall.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 12/12/2018 21:13

Probably a combination of factors such as not wanting to waste time we don’t have on a leadership contest and TM being the lesser of 2 evils, loletta.

turnipsaretheonlyveg · 12/12/2018 21:14

Do you think there is any chance we could have the WA vote and then start voting through options until one gets a majority ?

Quassia · 12/12/2018 21:14

To JRM: "You will have a busy night too, with more plotting"

BiglyBadgers · 12/12/2018 21:15

I actually think Corbyn had been proved to have done the right thing in resisting pressure to call a confidence motion so far and think he should wait a bit more. Better for the Tories to pull themselves to pieces and call no confidence when it's a sure thing than do it too soon.

IsobelKarev · 12/12/2018 21:18

I don't think there actually are any options which will get through parliament. "No deal" wouldn't get through, "no Brexit" wouldn't, and her WA seems the least likely of all! If she can't get legislation through parliament though, she really ought to resign as PM.

Can I change my answer to the title question?

All I want for Christmas is a functioning government.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/12/2018 21:18

Corbyn doesn't want to be lumbered with either cancelling Brexit, or carrying it through and dealing with the aftermath.

His strategy so far has been pure party politics:

"When your enemy is making a serious mistake, don't interfere"

BigChocFrenzy · 12/12/2018 21:21

After the previous ERG waste of time,
the Irish border summed up the ERG shenanigans perfectly:

The Irish Border@BorderIrish

The people who had the idea of Brexit but were too incompetent to actually organize it
have now had the idea of staging a coup against their own idea
but are too incompetent to actually organize it

Violetparis · 12/12/2018 21:23

Would there need to be a vote in Parliament in order to call a second referendum ? Is there enough MPs that want this ?

TheElementsSong · 12/12/2018 21:23

Mogg still calling on her to resign. Why doesn't he Respect the Will of the People? Does he Hate Democracy?

BigChocFrenzy · 12/12/2018 21:26

ERG:
""If I was her I would do the honourable thing and hand over to somebody who is 100% behind leaving the EU.""

Um, no, the Maybot will continue as a lesser evil than you disaster capitalists

Peregrina · 12/12/2018 21:27

Well, almost 2/3 of the vote in her favour. I would have said that was pretty convincing, myself. When is Rees-Mogg going to shut up?

Peregrina · 12/12/2018 21:28

But we have said that she is a zombie so can't be killed, remember that.

Peregrina · 12/12/2018 21:28

I hope it emboldens the rest of the Tory MPs to tell the ERG to stfu.
