Can I ask why if the British people were lied to on the campaign for the referendum you don’t want another vote?

I’ve been curious about this question a good while and it often pops up in conversation in my house. I live in Ireland and in this country when we have a referendum we have the referendum commission to monitor it. It’s role is to post through several media types unbiased information about the choice presented to the voter. Every person in the country who is registered to vote receives this information. We also monitor the radio and tv coverage to ensure each side gets equal time to campaign for the result they want.

Which is why when I look at what happened in the British referendum I am amazed at how the information was presented to you.

It’s been acknowledged that you were lied to in the campaign. And yet now I hear your politicians talk of respecting the vote of the people when the people were given such little respect by them.

Why not a second referendum considering the first was influenced by false information. In Ireland it would have been challenged through the courts and likely to have been deemed necessary to redo. I know as a Republic we hold referenda very often so are much more experienced but I am still amazed at how the voters were treated.

I think the Remainer 'lies' were the likely consequences, if Cameron hadn't immediately chickened out, and Osborne hadn't got the push and Mark Carney had sat on his hands and done nothing.

Unlike the Leaver lies of which the £350 million a week for the NHS was a blatant lie, and others almost as much, like Turkey gaining EU admission shortly and 80 million Muslims being entitled to move here.

mostdays · 03/12/2018 15:26

I want another vote.

snowflakealert · 03/12/2018 15:33

If they had another referendum, we still wouldn't know what we would be voting for, because nobody has told us what is in the draft agreement yet.

Talkinpeece · 03/12/2018 15:44

My heart wants another vote (as my son is 18 now)
My head does not trust people to vote for reasons other than the question on the paper again

Oblomov18 · 03/12/2018 15:46

What were we lied to about?
Which boys?
I didn't believe the crap about the NHS £350 in the first place. It was disputed at the time.

BorisBogtrotter · 03/12/2018 16:13

Its funny how leave voters all didn't believe the £350m thing, yet it was a central tenet of the campaign.

Did they not believe the scaremongering about immigrants, or the wishful thinking about free trade deals either?

What did they believe?

recently · 03/12/2018 16:19

I agree with you OP. I find it baffling that so many irregularities have been discovered yet it doesn't seem to matter? How is that democracy? And why bother with Any checks if there are no consequences? It pays to cheat!

jm90914 · 03/12/2018 16:22

@oblomov

Good for you. But the data we have to go on says that somewhere between 40-50% of people still believe the bullocks on the side of that bus.

If you didn’t believe the lies, that’s great. But lots of people did.

Having said, I think a second referendum would be like opening Pandora’s box.

I’d be more interested in a very serious inquiry into those dodgy cunts Farage and Banks.

I am voting Leave to give Cameron a bloody nose

I voted leave because I want the Government to pay attention to the regions

I voted leave because there are too many foreigners said a person who is German by birth

6 minutes of proven lies made by the Leave campaign on the run up to the referendum.

Watch.

Bonkerz · 03/12/2018 16:42

Can you imagine how weak we would look as a country if there was another referendum and the vote was remain. I think that would do us more damage than trying to salvage something from this leave deal.

Talkinpeece · 03/12/2018 16:46

Bonkerz
No, sorry, I think that admitting you made a mistake and correcting it is one of the STRONGEST things you can do
then again I'm rather into debt counselling at the moment

the EU would be delighted
our other trading partners would be delighted
a huge chunk of the population would be delighted

Thats not a reason to Leave! thats got to be the most crazy of reasons i've ever heard!

I'd argue admitting you made a mistake, is the sign of maturity and confidence, sneaking off, knowing you are wrong but worried about what others think is rather childish.

How do you think we look as a country at the moment?

cupofteaandcake · 03/12/2018 17:13

On yes, Ireland do referendum's so frequently and sooo well, except when the result is deemed to be incorrect. In 2008 the Irish voted 'no' by 53.4% to 46.6% against Lisbon treaty, the EU deemed this to be the 'wrong' answer so made them vote again. The Irish got it 'right' the second time around though.

Talkinpeece · 03/12/2018 17:17

Yup, and benefited massively from the outcome.

The Irish want the UK to rerun the referendum because they think we have been very stupid
as several of them told me to my face last month, while sadly smiling
and the Irish are VERY angry at the impact our vote will have on them

prettybird · 03/12/2018 17:39

The "Ireland was made to vote again to give the right answer" is a trope that anti-EU/Leave voters often claim about the Lisbon Treaty. Hmm

The areas of concern that both Ireland and Denmark had were addressed before people voted again.

Hermanhessescat · 03/12/2018 17:50

I’m in 2 minds about another referendum.
I’d like to think that people are now better informed about the positive benefits of Eu membership. Also the release of the impact statements demonstrating the huge economic hit on the country might have concentrated minds a bit. Unfortunately most people switched off the moment leave won hence the idiotic remarks demanding why we haven’t left yet ! They're not the slightest bit interested, not politically engaged at all, - they just want what they voted for.
I’ve listened to many a Brexit phone in or question time on tv - it’s quite sad to hear people wanting more accountability from our own mps or parliament etc, they don’t want faceless Brussels bureaucrats dictating to us but they are quite happy to let right wing nutters like Raab, priti Patel etc strip us of positive Eu legislation in their desire to create a Singapore tax haven ! There’s going to be a lot of very unhappy people that’s for sure when they see employment protection, environmental laws quietly shelved....

BollocksToBrexit · 03/12/2018 17:56

I don't think the lies really matter. At least not to the leave voters I know. The lies just fed into what they believe anyway. That belief isn't going to change even if the truth comes and hits them on the head.

For example, my mum believes Sweden is a failing state because of all the foreigners and women can no longer walk the streets as it's so dangerous. She showed me the Daily Mail article to prove it. But I know it's not true because I live in Sweden. Not only that, she should also know it's not true because she was here a week before that article was published. But the truth undermines her inner bigot so it's not true even when it is.

jm90914 · 03/12/2018 17:58

@cupofteaandcake

Completely untrue.

Ireland voted against. Amendments were therefore made, and the Irish people were asked again the following year.

That time the vote swung by just over 20% as a result of the changes.

The idea that Ireland were forced into it is so much bullshit. The history is plain and out there for everyone to see.

Regardless, the latest polling in Ireland shows that only 10% of Irish people want out of the EU. 90% of people in favour of EU membership can’t be explained away by “you can’t trust polls”. It’s too statistically significant a gap.

The Irish people voted in favour of the Lisbon treaty, and they’re overwhelmingly glad that they did.

ginghamstarfish · 03/12/2018 18:02

Politicians tend to tell lies when wanting votes and this was no different. It was up to the individual to decide and I certainly did not have my opinion swayed by either party on this. My opinion was formed before the decision to have the referendum, as I'm sure it was for the majority of voters. I would vote the same as I did the first time as my views have not changed, and those who shout loudest cannot keep having another referendum until they get the result THEY want. It makes a mockery of democracy.

jm90914 · 03/12/2018 18:08

@gingham

Speaking for yourself is cool.

Claiming to know the motivations of millions of people is not. Evidence, please.

You don’t vote once and then never vote again. That’s the opposite of democracy.

Cattenberg · 03/12/2018 18:16

My dad voted Remain, but didn't want a second referendum as he thought it would weaken our hand in the negotiations.

At the weekend, a friend told me that she voted Leave because "if we didn't want to be ruled by Germany, why did we bother fighting in the war?"

I don't know how a second referendum would go, as I honestly believe the first one was a triumph of emotion over logic.
