Who should be Labour leader?

Massively simplistic question I accept, but I was a huge fan of Corbyn in the beginning, I still am a fan of many of his policy views in general - ie socialism is good (told you this was simplistic Grin), but he's really got the whiff about him of a man out of his depth, in the wrong job, slowly dragging his party to demise

Given we may well have a general election in the next year or two, and we definitely will in the next 4 years, who would be a Labour leader that you could get behind?

I guess this question is directed at Labour voters and swing voters, probably not much at Tories who will never vote anything other than Tory

I don't have any strong contenders myself to start the list off with I'm afraid, but I promise I am a normal person and not some kind of bot / Labour party researcher.

I'm interested in seeing who more knowledgeable people might champion.

Posted in Brexit as I'm a very frustrated and unhappy remainder who is worried about the face that there is no decent opposition when one is desperately needed in the current situation

Really mother ? In what way?

KissingInTheRain · 25/11/2018 22:31

What are you all thinking? Jeremy isn’t just Leader of the Labour Party. He’s the political voice of God.

It’s not a matter of merely voting for him but of worshipping him.

To negotiate with the EU, Prime Minister Corbyn would walk across the Channel and heal the halt and lame along the way as he travels to Brussels on a donkey. Or he’d appear outside the Berlaymont building as a burning bush. Or something.

Greensleeves · 25/11/2018 22:32

I like Emily Thornberry

PinkPupZ · 25/11/2018 22:33

I like Corbyn..I've met him he is so genuine...but I would be happy with Angela Raynor or Andy Burnham. Maybe a few others on the left of centre. The left wing members would be very unlikely to vote for Cooper etc.

PinkPupZ · 25/11/2018 22:34

Yes i like ET too

HauntedPencil · 25/11/2018 22:56

I voted for Chaos with Ed once and I'd do it again.

Don't really fancy Actual Chaos with Corbyn.

HauntedPencil · 25/11/2018 22:57

Not very keen on Angela Rayner.

I don't mind Andy though, but he does have sad eyes.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 25/11/2018 23:00

Angela Rayner Confused she isn’t up to the job she has she is awful when put under any pressure when questioned

RebeccaWrongDaily · 25/11/2018 23:01

the next leader will be a woman and will be one of these >>

Angela Rayner, Emily Thornberry or Becky Long-Bailey.

I like Lisa Nandy, I love Yvette Cooper. They have no chance while the bromentum gang are calling the shots (sadly)

HauntedPencil · 25/11/2018 23:01

It's very very unlikely no? But who knows in these batshit times.

HauntedPencil · 25/11/2018 23:02

I'm not keen on any of that trio.

Not seen very much of Long Bailey of late.

RebeccaWrongDaily · 25/11/2018 23:09

I think he will step down (JC) if TM does.
leaving the door open for a pro remain female change of tack. You read it here first.

KissingInTheRain · 25/11/2018 23:20

I think he will step down (JC) if TM does.

When the end comes he will NOT be stepping down. He will ascend, to which the Momentum apostles will bear witness.

Amaaboutthis · 25/11/2018 23:31

David Miliband and I’m absolutely convinced he’s still involved in the background. I think he has the back of most of the Centre left MP’s and when a Labour MP in a safe seat retires they’ll get him back in. I don’t think he’s done

HauntedPencil · 25/11/2018 23:37

I just can't see him stepping down, aside from utter decimation in a GE and even then they'll blame someone else

Talkinpeece · 26/11/2018 12:21

Emily Thornberry has too much personal baggage - the tabloids would hound her.
That is why Chukka decided not to stand.

I have to assume that Kier has no dirt as the pro Brexit papers would have found it by now.

Yvette has no baggage / she and Ed are used to brazening it out.

But
JC thinks he is that anointed one and has rigged the rules to keep it that way
so the omens are not good

Kazzyhoward · 26/11/2018 12:26

It needs to be someone who wasn't involved at cabinet level in the Brown/Blair years, particularly the latter disastrous years when Brown was PM. We need someone with no direct links to that era.

Mistigri · 26/11/2018 16:58

@Kazzyhoward
Why? Brown's period in office coincided with the financial crisis, blame for which can't be ascribed to him or to his cabinet. Mistakes were made, but the idea that none of those people (most far more competent than the current Labour front bench) can ever hold office again is nuts.

If you asked your average voter to name cabinet ministers from 2008 you would probably come up with a blank.

mamaslatts · 26/11/2018 17:06

I think it will end up being Tom Watson as the most acceptable unifying candidate. McDonnell has suggested Long Bailey before and I think she is the left choice but I really don't like her or think she has the experience. I can't see a choice such as Chuka or Milliband getting past the momentum voters unless a load of centrists joined the labour party to vote in the elections (play JC at his own game).

Yvette Cooper has proved herself extremely competent but remember the last leadership elections she seemed a bit meh. Not that this seems to be a problem with political leaders these days.

Talkinpeece · 26/11/2018 17:12

I think it will end up being Tom Watson as the most acceptable unifying candidate.
(a) I very much doubt he'd take it
(b) He is not a unifying candidate - the extreme left (incl McDonnell and Corbyn) loathe him
(c) He's done nothing since the vote to drag the party off the fence which shows him up as weak IMHO

Mistrigri
Broon abolished boom and bust months before the biggest bust in our lifetimes
Broon did not mend the roof while the sun was shining
Broon missed every one of his growth / debt targets for 13 years
and Balls was his loyal attack dog right through it

bellinisurge · 26/11/2018 17:21

It beggars belief that people hate Gordon Brown and love And trust Rees Mogg.

robert97 · 26/11/2018 17:25

Doesn't mater who is the labour leader. We live in a democratic society and more people voted for may. Just like we live in a democratic society for brexit too. More people voted leave than remain. So we should leave and should have left years ago. If you don't like democracy, there are many countries worldwide led by dictatorship

Talkinpeece · 26/11/2018 17:27

But the cool thing about democracy is that elections are held regularly and people are allowed to change their mind

bellinisurge · 26/11/2018 17:38

@robert97 , if Labour had a decent leader, I would probably vote Labour. Corbyn is shit and so I won't. What with it being a democracy and all.

HauntedPencil · 26/11/2018 18:07

I thought Cooper was a bit Meh last time, but bloody hell what I wouldn't give for some Meh right now.
