Who should be Labour leader?

HillyMillylunchmunch · 24/11/2018 13:51

Massively simplistic question I accept, but I was a huge fan of Corbyn in the beginning, I still am a fan of many of his policy views in general - ie socialism is good (told you this was simplistic Grin), but he's really got the whiff about him of a man out of his depth, in the wrong job, slowly dragging his party to demise

Given we may well have a general election in the next year or two, and we definitely will in the next 4 years, who would be a Labour leader that you could get behind?

I guess this question is directed at Labour voters and swing voters, probably not much at Tories who will never vote anything other than Tory

I don't have any strong contenders myself to start the list off with I'm afraid, but I promise I am a normal person and not some kind of bot / Labour party researcher.

I'm interested in seeing who more knowledgeable people might champion.

Posted in Brexit as I'm a very frustrated and unhappy remainder who is worried about the face that there is no decent opposition when one is desperately needed in the current situation

Not because Yvette Cooper is a woman but because she is entirely suitable for the job.
Let the Momentum kidz go back to wherever they came from and let Corbyn go back under his rock - take that tosser , Mac Donald with him.
Let the grown ups do the job.

HollowTalk · 24/11/2018 18:21

That's it, isn't it? There are no adults in government and no adults leading the Labour Party. And there's been this huge fuck up and there's no-one to get us out of it.

hirsch · 24/11/2018 18:23

Yvette Cooper or Keir Starmer

Cheesecake53 · 24/11/2018 18:24

Another vote for Keir Starmer.

HoustonBess · 24/11/2018 18:25

I dunno, I'm kind of hoping both main parties implode and we then get a political revolution with new parties that reflect modern life, plus electoral reform. Not holding out much hope though!

I absolutely despair of Corbyn, nice enough policies (apart from on Brexit) but he just fails to articulate anything at all. He's just a sweet man murmuring in the corner while the Tories take an axe to the country.

W0rriedMum · 24/11/2018 18:28

I'm a swing voter who has had enough but would NEVER vote for Corbyn. I feel I have no party now with Labour, LibDems and Tories all being awful.

I'd vote for Yvette or Keir Starmer. If David Milliband returned, I'd vote for him too.

GlassOfPort · 24/11/2018 18:28

Keir Starmer.

I agree with the poster who said he would have a better chance to unite the party. He is a prominent member of the shadow cabinet and it would be more difficult for the left to accuse him of being a blairite.

As things stand, I can't bring myself to vote labour even if I have always done so in the past.

megletthesecond · 24/11/2018 18:30

Going on current form, Cooper.

Or Jarvis. Who has wisely kept his head down.

UAEMum · 24/11/2018 18:42

Yvette Cooper for sure!

Xenia · 24/11/2018 19:31

As a Tory, I find Corbyn a huge asset and he might ensure the Tories win in 2022 so I hope he stays.

sunshineroo · 24/11/2018 19:33

Milliband for me, just the right one this time. I often wonder what would have happened had he won last time...

mybrainhurtsalot · 24/11/2018 19:39

The problem is that the Corbyn loving wing would never vote for anyone associated with Blair (probably ruling out Yvette Cooper, who I think would be perfect) but anyone on the current shadow cabinet has lost all credibility due to the disastrous response to Brexit. Every time I see a clip of YC from a select committee I wish she had won the leadership.

QuentinLettsisAbitofAtool · 24/11/2018 19:50

what about Chuka Umunna?

Hermano · 24/11/2018 19:56

Chukka opted out last time he was a contender. I have been told why by some friends who work in those sorts of circles, and I'm not going to gossip, and will not confirm or deny anything, but assuming my friends are right, he was wise to opt out when he did before the papers published what they had on him. I think it is very unlikely he will ever run again.
Shame in some ways as he had a lot going for him.

DPotter · 24/11/2018 19:57

I'm re-assured that David Milliband works for International Rescue - because we sure need some help.

Agree with so many others - it's almost anyone but Corbyn. He does have merits as a politician - he's the type who asks the awkward questions, keeps others honest. But he isn't a leader and can't attract / keep the best people around him, doesn't have the gumption to formulate policy. He certainly isn't the right person to steer a way through this current mess

DeRigueurMortis · 24/11/2018 20:21

Cooper for me.

Unlike Starmer she's got the "top" ministerial experience.

I'll also admit to wanting a woman to lead the LP - but leaving that aside I think she's the stand out candidate in terms of gravitas and experience.

I'd be very happy to see Starmer in a key role though and even happier to see Corbyn, McDonnell and their cronies put out to grass.

DeRigueurMortis · 24/11/2018 20:22

I'd also like to see Ed Balls make a political come back :-)

1dayatatime · 25/11/2018 09:29
  1. Yvette Cooper 2) Dan Jarvis, 3) Hilary Benn in that order.
WorriedMutha · 25/11/2018 09:53

Keir or Yvette but I prefer Keir. Yvette has got form in New Labour and probably can't therefore unite the various factions. Keir has the beauty of being Brexit sensible and also having stayed loyal to Corbyn. My fear is the majority lefty membership will shoehorn one of their own in.

DavedeeDozyBeakyMickandTich · 25/11/2018 09:57

Keir Starmer without doubt.

QuentinLettsisAbitofAtool · 25/11/2018 10:17

Keir is a bit short on charisma though, isn't he?
How would he perform at PM QT?

Redact · 25/11/2018 10:19

David Milliband, Yvette cooper or Keith Starmer

Redact · 25/11/2018 10:20

Keir not Keith, thanks autocorrect

VickieCherry · 25/11/2018 10:23

Yvette Cooper or Keir Starmer. David Milliband would also work, also I suspect Ed Balls would do well if he fancied it.

I'm a life-long Labour supporter but only joined after Brexit because it scared me so much (fat lot of good that did). Now I'm literally only staying a member so I can eventually vote for someone decent.

We need someone middle England will vote for. Floating voters and disaffected Tories are never going to vote for Corbyn.

WorriedMutha · 25/11/2018 10:43

For the those suggesting David Miliband, he isn't an MP right now. The chances of him being selected under a Corbyn leadership with the current membership are nil. Are we playing fantasy football?
