Brexit

Who should be Labour leader?

Massively simplistic question I accept, but I was a huge fan of Corbyn in the beginning, I still am a fan of many of his policy views in general - ie socialism is good (told you this was simplistic Grin), but he's really got the whiff about him of a man out of his depth, in the wrong job, slowly dragging his party to demise

Given we may well have a general election in the next year or two, and we definitely will in the next 4 years, who would be a Labour leader that you could get behind?

I guess this question is directed at Labour voters and swing voters, probably not much at Tories who will never vote anything other than Tory

I don't have any strong contenders myself to start the list off with I'm afraid, but I promise I am a normal person and not some kind of bot / Labour party researcher.

I'm interested in seeing who more knowledgeable people might champion.

Posted in Brexit as I'm a very frustrated and unhappy remainder who is worried about the face that there is no decent opposition when one is desperately needed in the current situation

Yvette wipes the floor with all the male candidates. She has been phenomenal in select committee.

lonelyplanetmum · 25/11/2018 11:52

It has to be Yvette.

Apart from anything else, there's the well known glass cliff effect.

If anything's a cliff edge this is.

McWilde · 25/11/2018 11:52

Am not keen on Cooper, I think she is a good candidate but she also seems to be tone deaf if she has made up her mind on an issue, something which put me off Corbyn.
Stubbornness and an unwillingness to look at all sides is not a good quality for a Leader.

fieryginger · 25/11/2018 11:55

Corbyn will never be elected as Prime Minister, Labour desperately need to change candidate. Maybe they think "well, if Trump can win...."

Abra1de · 25/11/2018 12:20

what about Chuka Umunna?

Didn't he de-select himself from the leadership race last time round, or am I misremembering?

Talkinpeece · 25/11/2018 15:48

Keir Starmer

from among the current MPs

Andy Burnham

from among those who put distance between themselves and Corbyn
(he is currently Mayor of Manchester and is doing lots of cool cross party stuff with Andy Street, Tory Mayor of the West Midlands)

Yvette Cooper

is an option, but I thought her hubby did a CRAP job with Gordon Brown.

The80sweregreat · 25/11/2018 15:50

Keir Starmer!
Seems to be a bit more in touch with things.
I don't dislike J C myself , but people will not vote for labour whilst his the leader. They won't win anything. It's just my opinion though.

Talkinpeece · 25/11/2018 15:50

@Xenia
DH has said for a while that Corbyn is a Tory mole Grin

SwedishEdith · 25/11/2018 16:00

Dan Jarvis always crops up on these threads but I've never actually heard him speak. Doesn't seem to be a regular on QT or Newsnight. And he's recently become Mayor of Sheffield so looks out of the running anyway.

It's only going to be from Starmer or Cooper, really. Someone who looks and sounds like a competent adult and could attract people who don't usually vote Labour. No point in only appealing to people who already do vote Labour.

TheNumberfaker · 25/11/2018 16:39

Cooper or Starmer.

QuentinLettsisAbitofAtool · 25/11/2018 17:04

If they ran now would they stand any chance of winning?

Talkinpeece · 25/11/2018 17:11

No
because Corbyn has nobbled the selection process with the £3 members
many of whom believe in him
rather than in good government

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 25/11/2018 17:32

Keir Starmer or Yvette Cooper

Starmer has certainly getting some guidance on how to get over his opinion while appear controlled and knowledgeable (which he is)

Though now if there was a snap election and Labour had a new leader I think May would gain seats

GirlsBlouse17 · 25/11/2018 19:57

Hilary Benn

GirlsBlouse17 · 25/11/2018 19:57

Or either of the Milliband brothers!

Talkinpeece · 25/11/2018 20:13

Ed has already failed once.
He'd be great in the cabinet but would not work as leader.
David can be considered to have cut and run out of the UK

It has to be somebody who has stuck with UK politics.

BestIsWest · 25/11/2018 20:16

Cooper. She’s phenomenal.

missmoon · 25/11/2018 20:20

I don’t normally vote Labour (Lib Dem or Green), but I love Yvette Cooper. I think she’s very impressive.

GoldenPomBearBadge · 25/11/2018 21:12

I don’t think it’s fair to blame a husbands perceived short comings at work on his wife!

Talkinpeece · 25/11/2018 21:14

Golden
They are a team. They work together. She should have moderated him. Or he should have listened to her.

BestIsWest · 25/11/2018 21:21

As if she hasn’t got enough to do she has to ‘moderate’ her husband?

GoldenPomBearBadge · 25/11/2018 21:21

Okay Talkin, I do see your point. I’m willing to come round to your way of thinking. Just not yet Smile

GirlsBlouse17 · 25/11/2018 21:58

If Theresa May does not offer the opportunity for a people's vote on Brexit then I would definitely never vote for the Conservatives ever again in my life. I don't want Labour to get in power with Corbyn as PM so I would vote Lib Dems in a general election next time

AutumnCrow · 25/11/2018 22:02

Cooper or Starmer
