Westministenders: Well this is getting interesting!

The Minister responsible for writing a deal with the EU has succeeded in coming to an agreement. And has subsequently resigned because he can not agree with it. This man previously didn't know where Dover was, and why this was important. This man is a solicitor used to writing and reading complicated documents.

And we are supposed to believe he has done the honourable thing and has quit on a matter of principle. And has in no way, been a Carpetbagger all along and has deliberately intended to scupper a deal.

Mundell is not wrong about his former Cabinet College but its not terribly polite.

Esther has fucked off too. She was cut out the loop over the UC slow down and was precorded as civil servants thought she'd go crackers if she gave a live interview. This seems consistent with reports that she threw a tantrum in the Cabinet meeting, demanding a vote, before Sir Humphrey told her to refer to the Cabinet Handbook that states that votes are not allowed.

Rees-Smugg seems to have triggered a split in the ERG and has submitted a letter to Graham. Graham has been to see Julian, to tell him that he's not had enough fan mail - yet. Other ERG seem more content to just attempt to vote the deal down. Will there be a confidence vote? If there is, will May win? If she does she gets a special prize of 12 months immunity albeit with the booby prize of still having to get a deal through Parliament.

May now seems to be running a minority government as there are suggestions that the confidence and supply deal with the DUP is over. Kate Hoey appear to have joined the DUP. Perhaps she should have resigned from the Labour party first.

Gove was offered the poison chalice of the Brexit Secretary post. Initial reports said he baulked at the responsibility. Will he resign? Is he just going to go for the top job now? There is now suggestion, he hasn't rejected it afterall. Maybe she should just abolish the department and reallocate resources to the Cabinet office (like she's already done anyway).

Mordaunt is meeting the PM this afternoon to be told personally that there isn't a cat in hell's chance that May will have a free vote over Brexit. Just so she can get the PR for her leadership bid. Resignation scheduled for this afternoon.

Hunt and Javid just sat on the front bench after making noises to please leavers and set themselves up for their leadership bid.

Johnson is lurking. No statement today. Got some ringing around to get supporters for his leadership bid? Will he be the stalking horse?

Loathsome and Fox, admit their political careers have reached their zenith, and they got a cat in hell's chance of getting another Cabinet post. They are not resigning. Today at least.

Greyling is currently silent. There is speculation that his resignation is running late. Twitter is having a field day with jokes.

Duncan has said that an ERG candidate won't be able to form a government - implying that Tories would resign the whip if they did.

Stewart, has done his honourable best to support May through thick and thin, with his best Comical Ali impression and spouting any old bollocks on the radio. Bless Little Rory.

Neill retweets him. Soames doesn't sounds unlike them both. Morgan wouldn't mind a Cabinet job again. Soubry doesn't really care who is in charge as long anymore so long as its not the ERG.

Hancock said in Cabinet that he couldn't guarentee no deaths in a no deal situation. Leavers do not have an alternative idea to May's deal but No Deal. They don't mind risking Hancock being unable to protect people from death.

There are 10 days to go until the EU Summit. We have no idea if we will have a clear PM. Two days later we find out if unilateral revokation is an option to save our necks from disaster if we get that far.

If there is a no confidence vote, its penciled in for Tuesday.

The only Brexit certainity you can be sure of is this thread won't make it til then.

@GaryLineker
Very apposite for the Prime Minister to use her Boycott analogy... He was, of course, famously and deliberately run out by one of his own teammates. Mr Botham, I believe.

clarrylove · 15/11/2018 18:17

How rude, Buteo!
I think WF speaks a lot of sense. Wish they would just get on with it.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/11/2018 18:18

If there is a No Confidence vote againtgs her leadership ....

https://www.ft.com/content/1c20f364-0653-3028-aa0a-0dde7c26a6a6

If 159 MPs go on to vote against the PM, that is 51 per cent of MPs, Mrs May will be removed
and a full scale contest to find a new leader would have to be held.

If the rebellion falls short of 159, Mrs May cannot be challenged for another year.

But would the Brexiter rebellion muster the 159 that are needed?

Many MPs believe it would only succeed if there were a clear consensus about who the replacement candidate should be.
And this would require, in turn, a consensus over the party’s post-May Brexit strategy.

RedToothBrush · 15/11/2018 18:19

wanting to murder someone with a stame roller?

I do however agree with this.

Its not necessary to say you want to kill or harm a politician.

No matter how much you might think that or say that privately.

Simply because of Jo Cox.

The government is falling apart before our eyes. Their half-baked deal has unravelled, the Prime Minister has lost all authority and is clearly incapable of delivering a Brexit deal that commands even the support of her Cabinet - let alone Parliament and the people of our country.

Our Party Conference agreed that this deal would be judged against our six tests, and if it failed to meet them we would vote against it.

After two years of bungled negotiations, the government has produced a botched deal that breaches the Prime Minister's own red lines, does not meet our six tests and will leave the country in an indefinite halfway house without a real say.

As I said in Parliament earlier today, people around the country will be feeling anxious about the industries they work in, the jobs they hold and the stability of this country.

We do not accept that the choice is between the government's deal and 'no deal'. We will work across Parliament to stop a 'no deal' outcome. Labour has set out our alternative plan for a sensible Brexit that would work for all of our nations and regions, bring Parliament and the country together, support jobs and our economy and guarantee rights, standards and protections.

If Parliament votes down this shambolic Tory deal — as seems likely — this will represent a loss of confidence in the government. In those circumstances the best outcome for the country is an immediate General Election that can sweep the Tories from power and deliver the Labour government this country desperately needs.

If we cannot get a General Election, in line with our conference policy, we will support all options remaining on the table, including campaigning for a public vote.

We are ready to lead, ready to deliver a sensible deal that works for all our regions and nations and ready to build a Britain that works for the many, not the few.

Jeremy Corbyn
Leader of the Labour Party

I'm still trying to make up my mind if accepting TM's deal is something I should be doing. The emergence of such hostility towards it tilts me towards thinking that although stupid it may be the best we can get at present.

RedToothBrush · 15/11/2018 18:20

Liam O'Hare @LiamOHare
Theresa May took over a dozen questions at that press conference but refused to take any from Channel 4 News.

Interesting. One to keep an eye on in the immediate future.

I don't know.

I do know, that No Deal is worse.

Remaining carries its own problems and issues - it is not a status quo outcome regardless of what people are saying.

Oh dear I have put my foot in it I see. I am harmless.
I was merely trying express my exasperation at someone who constantly pops up and is clearly trying to gain power with no positive ideas as how to move forward.

MyBrexitIsIll · 15/11/2018 18:26

is clearly incapable of delivering a Brexit deal that commands even the support of her Cabinet - let alone Parliament and the people of our country.

See that sort of comment annoys the hell out of me.
It sorts of says that it was POSSIBLE to get a better deal. But really was it ever?? The backstop was inevitable. And that implies all the ‘staying within the EU rules for goods etc’
This is not the right time to try and score points.

Red unicorns rather than blue ones

Talkstotrees · 15/11/2018 18:28

WhollyFather reminds me of my uncle Derek. Bless him.

Mays final words “and he got the runs in the end” Shock How unfortunate. (My uncle Derek often suffers with that too. Bless him).

BigChocFrenzy · 15/11/2018 18:29

SkyData Poll:

No Brexit - 54%

No deal - 32%

May's deal - 14%
RedToothBrush · 15/11/2018 18:29

Minimammoth, I'd be lying if I said I didn't hear your exasperation and frustration!

Can anyone explain why Labour want a general election. I know all parties want to be in power but

 1. Do they think they would be elected to government with a working majority and if so
 2. does JC really want to have to negotiate Brexit?
 3. does the wider Labour Party want JC in charge of Brexit? Would the parliamentary party support his current negotiating position (if he had one?
MyBrexitIsIll · 15/11/2018 18:31

I agree Pain.

All the ‘we have set out an alternative plan’...yes, what is it then, because after 2,5 years we still havent heard what it could be (and yes I suspect Unicorns again. Plenty of those around it seems those days)

DGRossetti · 15/11/2018 18:31

Those 48 letters won't materialise.

JRM/ERG are a busted flush. Tomorrow, we'll be amazed that anyone could have been scared by them ... the Wizard of Oz ....

Conservative HQ warns toppling May could mean losing Brexit:

Westministenders: Well this is getting interesting!
prettybird · 15/11/2018 18:34

The Brexiters must be rattled - Whollyfather has popped up again to mansplain to us the error of our ways Grin

Fortunately, we have other men who post on here who are much more intelligent, with considered contributions rather than dogma and prejudice, so that we don't tar all men with Whollyfather's Brexshit brush Wink

I had to take the bookmark off this thread so that I could go back and skim the whole thread as Xenia's characterisation of it as "uncalled for rude name calling, not normally allowed on MN" wasn't my recollection of it. All I could find were comments about politicians, with rude , albeit common nicknames (like Loathsome and Rees-Smugg) and a single "steam rollering" post (which in the context was quite mild and has since been apologised for ) Confused. As threads go, I think the comments on here are mild, given the frustration and anger that people feel.

DGRossetti · 15/11/2018 18:35

DGR that's what I hope. But until it happens..

You mean until it doesn't happen ? That's how they've managed to cow everyone. Like a bank robber with a banana in bag* .

You can't prove a negative.

*A straight banana, obviously.

BigChocFrenzy · 15/11/2018 18:36

Labour would be nuts to take over and get the blame for this clusterfuck

 • either the most humiliating climbdown and ask to remain
 • or crash out, wreck the economy and peoples' lives for years

At the very least, the party responsible should be torn to shreds and kept out of power for a generation, so they can never screw us up like this again

AutumnCrow · 15/11/2018 18:37

May could just have flushed out the ERG turds.

Now she needs to look at those polls like the SkyData one.

lonelyplanetmum · 15/11/2018 18:38

I wonder if she will take on. board any public opinion on the last 24 hours

Well she avoids newspapers now and relies on briefings. Public opinion and news clearly doesn't count for much if she's a Boycott fan anyway.
