Westminstenders: Crisis. What Crisis

October is slowly rolling into November.

Your eyes, rightly, will be distracted by events the other side of the pond.

It won't be good and it won't be pretty and it will have an impact on what happens here in relation to Brexit in one way or another.

May seems to have headed off trouble makers for now. But that means nothing if she can't get a deal through parliament.

And if you think we are in anyway prepared for No Deal I'd like whatever drugs you are taking. That way lies only disorder and to put it bluntly, deaths.

We MUST find a deal, any deal to prevent that. Desperation is the final ingredients in this mess. Who will blink as they realise what's at stake?

The problem is though, is too few MPs have grasped what's at state, such is the quality of our elected representatives. And that's the truly terrifying bit.

If they can't work out the risk of no deal, they certainly not equipped to handle the fall out of no deal.

If you want to shit yourself anymore, I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you that the minister responsible for hauling all your food and medical supplies in the event if no deal, is Mr Christopher Grayling.

Start praying.

www.theregister.co.uk/2018/10/26/biz_including_bmw_airbus_and_siemens_to_slash_uk_tech_spending_as_firms_losing_patience_with_brexit/

The dial for biz tech spending growth in the UK will barely move for 2018 as businesses that are “losing patience” with the uncertainty surrounding Brexit negotiations cut their budgets, and GDP slows.

(contd)

DGRossetti · 26/10/2018 14:38

Liam Fox's plan to swiftly replicate the EU's terms with the World Trade Organization has failed.

I think "plan" is a little bit overblown, as it suggests some intelligence behind it.

Anything coming out of Liam Foxs mouth is more like a fart. No intelligence, and offensive to most.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2018 14:51

I posted the original Reuters link yesterday, but several more media outlets now seem to have realised the implication

It was obvious one or more countries would object at the WTO

i was expecting it to probably be Argentina, but the only surprise is that Russia came out into the open.
If they hadn't, then one of the 19 countries who had informally raised objections would have done so - several of them from the "Anglosphere"

Countries don't "play nice" or gentlemanly when billions in trade annually are at stake
Noone cares who did what in WW2 when negotiating trade

And who does the Uk have to fight its case at its most critical time post-WW2: Fox ..... Fox ??

So sorry, scooby
I can only suggest he gets his GP to write him off sick for a few weeks with stress, to safeguard his health
so you can use the time to chill together and talk about what's possible for you in the future

DGRossetti · 26/10/2018 14:57

In a proper* country, the WTO snafu would be headlines, and certain high level cabinet ministers would be facing serious grillings.

(*- Sherlock, S3E3 "... when I see it works here, I try it on a proper country. The United Kingdom: Petrie disk to the world ...")

Mildly interesting, that Kentonline article referenced a little earlier has gone now.
I suppose the trucks carrying all the exports from the UK will just need marshalling properly. Long queues held in the UK while Calais 'process' one ferryload at a time and not allowing more to come across the channel until rigorous checking has been done.
Also on that Kentonline page was an advert for P+O ferries. Can I add a line saying that from March 30th they will only be making 'sightseeing' cruises, so the Brits can LOOK at the EU but not actually go there?

1tisILeClerc · 26/10/2018 15:04

Shouldn't 'grilled Fox' be on the cookery pages?

Unless you are the Trade minister you are exempt, we don't even want to send the dogs after you. Mind you if you are the one 'pooing' on my lawn please can you do that a bit further away!

New exam question:

Calculate the carbon footprint of 10 miles of HGVs advancing at a length of one HGV every 2 minutes. Your workings should cover:

a) a scenario where all engines are kept running for the duration of the journey,
b) a scenario where lorries start/stop their engines for each step of the journey.

You may assume an average HGV length is 30m, and drivers have been instructed to leave a gap of no less than 3m in between lorries for access for emergency vehicles. You may also assume that the time each lorry takes to travel a lorrys length is an average of 30s.

(Advanced students only)

Given the number of lorries in a queue 10 miles, long, and the time to traverse the queue, how many lorries will need to stop in order to comply with driving time legislation ?

DGRossetti · 26/10/2018 15:32

To be filed under "Who'd have thought it ? If only we'd had an idea ..." (hence Brexit related ?)

Fracking stopped (10 days after restarting ) after an earthquake.

Fracking has been suspended at a site in Lancashire after the British Geological Survey (BGS) recorded an earthquake of 0.8 magnitude.

Drilling for shale gas at Preston New Road in Little Plumpton was given the green light on 15 October, despite strong opposition.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2018 15:34

iirc 7,000 lorries per day travel between Dover and Calais

What Lord Peter Hain didn’t consider when he rushed to name Philip Green There are conflicting interests and considerations of public policy, free speech, evidence and law which deserved a fair hearing

Republicans are doing so well in early voting, and at the polls, and now this “Bomb” stuff happens and the momentum greatly slows - news not talking politics. Very unfortunate, what is going on. Republicans, go out and vote!

@RTB, so does this suggest that Lord Hain's input was really about scuppering a review of the use of NDA's?

DGRossetti · 26/10/2018 15:45

Exclusive: Lord Hain is paid adviser to law firm that represented The Telegraph in Sir Philip Green injunction case

As suspected yesterday, this is deeper than it looks.

The only loser will be democracy, as parliamentary privilege is emasculated beyond belief. We return to a pre civil war landscape where there's no check on rulers.

RedToothBrush · 26/10/2018 15:49

It suggests that the idea that Hain was making the statement in the public interest is questionable. If he is paid by the law firm it looks like parliamentary priviledge has been paid for.

Given that half the point of questioning NDAs is all about the rule of law being different for those who can pay to get around it, it makes you wonder.

A lot.

Yet another Government info paper out. Concerning intellectual property.
I have a feeling the preamble has changed and it is now saying definitely that the UK will be 'out'. I think the bit about not being a no deal and working hard for (something) has been removed.
However, minor eyeroll at { The Withdrawal Act will ensure that the UK exits the EU with certainty, continuity, and control.}

Exactly DGR.

Worrying.

It was an abuse of the responsibility of power.

Which will hand power to the powerful, if it is removed. Ironically.

HUGE clanger by Hain

  • he should have declared as soon as he revealed Green's name that he is in effect paid by the side fighting the injunction
BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2018 16:09

or maybe kept his mouth shut until the court case was over
The Telegraph might well have won
or someone else (even he) could have told Jess Phillips

I suspect he was on an ego trip
