Westminstenders: Crisis. What Crisis

October is slowly rolling into November.

Your eyes, rightly, will be distracted by events the other side of the pond.

It won't be good and it won't be pretty and it will have an impact on what happens here in relation to Brexit in one way or another.

May seems to have headed off trouble makers for now. But that means nothing if she can't get a deal through parliament.

And if you think we are in anyway prepared for No Deal I'd like whatever drugs you are taking. That way lies only disorder and to put it bluntly, deaths.

We MUST find a deal, any deal to prevent that. Desperation is the final ingredients in this mess. Who will blink as they realise what's at stake?

The problem is though, is too few MPs have grasped what's at state, such is the quality of our elected representatives. And that's the truly terrifying bit.

If they can't work out the risk of no deal, they certainly not equipped to handle the fall out of no deal.

If you want to shit yourself anymore, I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you that the minister responsible for hauling all your food and medical supplies in the event if no deal, is Mr Christopher Grayling.

Start praying.

Dominic Grieve on R4 saying Lord Hain was wrong to disclose that identity as no-one in this country has the right to take away someone else’s rights. (Or words to that effect.)

Ok.... what about Brexiteers voting to take away our rights to live, work and study in 27 other countries? Still bitter about that.

Might be worth mentioning that lost right in some of those letters.

DGRossetti · 26/10/2018 13:24

I think he needs to learn how the law works. Courts take away peoples rights every day. Jeez, good thing he's not involved in the law in this country.

KennDodd · 26/10/2018 13:25

Just having a look to see if I could find out how many letters the PM gets each day, couldn't find out but the US president gets 65,000 at day. This seems an awful lot. He also gets 100,000+ emails and 10,000+ phone calls. Oh, and 1,000+ faxs. Our population is about 20% of America's so maybe TM gets Labour 20% of the above numbers.

KennDodd · 26/10/2018 13:28

Actually my 10 year old wrote to the PM a few months ago, it was just some nonsense about please ban homework, she got a reply, on nice posh paper, very quickly, about 10 days later, so they can't be that overwhelmed yet.

bellinisurge · 26/10/2018 13:39

@UnnecessaryFennel - good tip.

KennDodd · 26/10/2018 13:51

I was going to start some stockpiling. Does anybody know a website where I can get bulk amounts of non food stuffs like toilet rolls and dishwasher tablets? Hopefully it'll be cheaper to buy in bulk anyway?

ShinyElena · 26/10/2018 13:57

Tesco apparently has a new bulk buy section.

ShinyElena · 26/10/2018 13:59

I build my stockpile little by little. Thanks for the suggestion of candles. I could not bring myself to get pot noodles though. That seems a step too far.

KennDodd · 26/10/2018 14:02

Maybe they're cashing in on Brexit? Is it on their website?

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2018 14:05

I'd first build up a stock of food that doesn't need any heating
e.g. longlife milk, cereals, crackers, pnut butter, jam, tins of cold meat, fish, kidney beans, fruit, rice pud

plus food that only needs a kettle
e.g. pot noodles, instant porridge

DGRossetti · 26/10/2018 14:06

Don't they own Makro and Bookers ?

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2018 14:07

3-4 days of food like that for real emergencies in case of power cuts

Icantreachthepretzels · 26/10/2018 14:10

e.g. longlife milk,

I'm afraid we're still waiting for the long life milk to have a shelf life beyond March 2019. Crackers too. Shouldn't be long now - but some basics have had to be held off because their expiration dates were too close to B-day to make buying them worthwhile.

Failing Grayling is - NOT - "taking back control of our borders:"

www.kentonline.co.uk/dover/news/we-will-maintain-a-free-flowing-border-at-dover-192246/

"We will maintain a free-flowing border at Dover, we will not impose checks at the port, it is utterly unrealistic to do so.
We don't check lorries now, < yes you do, any lorry not from the EU or a country with a trade deal >
we're not going to be checking lorries in the future."

“We are absolutely clear it cannot happen.

We will not in any circumstances create a hard border in Dover"

DGRossetti · 26/10/2018 14:16

ISIS/Daesh must be rubbing their hands (the ones who aren't shoplifters, of course)

Yep. My local tesco.

No bulk buy bog roll (which I was looking for) but I do believe they had dishwasher tabs and washing powder. And 1kg jars of nutella. Which would last about a week in my household so bloody useless if its not in a crate.

Apologies for the self-centred nature of the following, during yet another sleepless night I wondered if it would help to share.

The place where DH works has become so dysfunctional due to Brexit uncertainty that DH seriously fears for his job and finds dealing with the day to day situation really hard as the environment is so negative. It’s now affecting his mental and physical health in several ways. I’m really worried about him.
He’s looked for other jobs for over a year and there has been nothing - employment agencies say this is due to Brexit.
I would be delighted for him to find a new job as I hate to see him so unhappy. But his work is rare and a new job would almost certainly involve relocation, probably to England. We love living in Scotland, so it would be a really hard move.
I know we are very lucky as we have no immediate serious financial or health concerns as so many others do. But I’m so angry that there has been such a downturn in DH’s happiness and it need not have happened.

RedToothBrush · 26/10/2018 14:18

So we are staying in the single market and customs union then?

The Times of London @ thetimes
Britain is preparing for trade negotiations with almost two dozen nations after they objected to the terms it proposed for its World Trade Organisation membership after Brexit

Anyone here shocked?

No?

NEXT.

The Columnist @Sime0nStylites
1. ‘Norway for Now’ is a clever slogan. The @NickBoles temporary EEA plan has something for many of the Brexit factions - though perhaps not so much for No Deal advocates and supporters of a second referendum pre Brexit

whatwouldscooby that's horrible for you both. If the worse comes to the worse would you two be okay for a bit if he handed in his notice or took sick leave? I know it sounds extreme but someimes we cope better when we feel as if theres an opt out and we are choosing to stay.

UnnecessaryFennel · 26/10/2018 14:31

Scooby no advice but Flowers, it's so stressful. And none of this needs to be happening. None of it. That's what makes me so angry.

The only bright spot I can find is that I secretly adore chicken-and-mushroom Pot Noodles and I may have the excuse to eat them from March 2019. Gotta look on the bright side, right? Blush

Red, no, not shocked. Or surprised. Not much surprises me these days tbh.

Bloomberg Brexit @Brexit
Liam Fox's plan to swiftly replicate the EU's terms with the World Trade Organization has failed.

Now Britain must enter what are likely to be lengthy talks with other members on basic conditions of trade after Brexit:
