Westminstenders: Crisis. What Crisis

October is slowly rolling into November.

Your eyes, rightly, will be distracted by events the other side of the pond.

It won't be good and it won't be pretty and it will have an impact on what happens here in relation to Brexit in one way or another.

May seems to have headed off trouble makers for now. But that means nothing if she can't get a deal through parliament.

And if you think we are in anyway prepared for No Deal I'd like whatever drugs you are taking. That way lies only disorder and to put it bluntly, deaths.

We MUST find a deal, any deal to prevent that. Desperation is the final ingredients in this mess. Who will blink as they realise what's at stake?

The problem is though, is too few MPs have grasped what's at state, such is the quality of our elected representatives. And that's the truly terrifying bit.

If they can't work out the risk of no deal, they certainly not equipped to handle the fall out of no deal.

If you want to shit yourself anymore, I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you that the minister responsible for hauling all your food and medical supplies in the event if no deal, is Mr Christopher Grayling.

Start praying.

I'm a lurker, thanks to all of you for all your thoughts.

Can I ask something? Are Brexit threads shown on Active or not?

I never see them there. But timing is everything I know that.

Thank you, and keep up the great work.

1tisILeClerc · 26/10/2018 18:53

Yes Brexit thread does appear, usually briefly in 'Active'.

A small glimmer for Expats, a bill has been presented to continue EHIC and ongoing medical care in Europe, regardless of crashing out.
You can sign up for email receipt of UK Gov 'technical papers' so you can fill up your inbox (slowly).

Hazardswan · 26/10/2018 18:56

whatwouldscooby that's good that's he mentioned resigning, I know its worrying but from personal experience get the violins out it's much better he jacks it in intentionally instead of stress or ill health FORCING the point. The latter sucks to watch and you don't get to say told you so when he's half dead because people will think it's insensitive Grin (to give it's due though it really helps the ESA process when you can say I collapsed at work and they packed me in on medical grounds...still wouldn't be my first choice however )

It sounds as if he has his head on straight and priorities right. And you sound like lovely people who can get through things and that's all that matters Flowers

Sorry derail...

prettybird · 26/10/2018 18:58

As far as I am aware, they do - I'll check once I've posted this Wink But Active Conversations move so fast, you can blink and miss it.

On the app, you can make the Brexit topic one of your favourites and check it regularly. On the laptop, I find it easiest to click on Threads I'm on and then the Brexit topic (as there will definitely be a Brexit "thread I'm on" Wink)

fieldgold · 26/10/2018 19:02

prettybird,

I have you all on "I'm watching" hope you don't mind!

But my point was that if the Brexit threads are kind of hidden, the majority of this community cannot or will not know what the convo is about.

As I said, I'm lurking, but may come out of my shell now and then.

Great information here thank you all.

prettybird · 26/10/2018 19:03

Just checked, after I posted, and it was indeed on Active conversations. But within seconds of posting, it wax already several posts down.

SusanWalker · 26/10/2018 19:09

I can't remember where I read it - poss twitter- but someone was pointing out that the government's plan of pre notified imports through Dover would still cause massive disruption as the company would have to declare in advance what and when they were moving. Apparently lorries are currently swapped to different ferries at the last minute to avoid bad weather or anything that is known will hold them up. If course under the four freedoms they can swap away.

1tisILeClerc · 26/10/2018 19:16

@field
A couple of the Westminsterender 'regulars' have asked MNHQ to make the Brexit topic a bit more 'noticeable' like a button on the main page, but this has come to nothing for some rather distinct reason.
Strange hypocrisy though as when they held a Brexit related 'poll' it was all over the main page for a few days.
Really must find out why someone was told off for not giving their child some breakfast, obviously very important. I suppose following Brexit 'breakfast' may become a luxury for too many. I wonder how many might relate to this appalling prospect for what was one of the worlds biggest economies?

What the targeting of Trump critics reveals about America's rotting core

Worrying times over the pond, too

1tisILeClerc · 26/10/2018 19:21

@Susan
I think I had seen something similar. Of course vehicles would need to be secured otherwise would still need proper security checking (delay) and there are some who break into lorries when they get near the ports.
'Secure load' has been suggested as a 'workaround' for Ireland/NI which is far more possible but with vehicles travelling from Southern Spain or Poland actually making an 'arrival slot' will be pretty difficult.

Sounds a bit like Brexit topics are not welcome here. I do hope I am not banned or anything for saying that, but you never know!

Yet the information you lot have posted is amazingly informative. Thanks again.

woman11017 · 26/10/2018 19:28

From that article BigChoc

The second is more systematic and sinister: the violence used to keep down groups who threaten the social and political order. This is the violence of strike breakers and the KKK

Does anyone remember Jonestown? Feels like that's what the crackers here and there emulate. All these aulld fellers who didn't fight in any wars themselves, but watched stuff unable to join in in the 70s and 80s.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonestown

UKIP and Brexitty men are quite incel-ly too aren't they.

Our fault, though. Indolence is fatal.

Writing letters isn't going to stop these nutters. Sadly.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2018 19:29

iirc, North thinks the UK will apply an emergency WTO waiver (national emergency, no waiting period required) and let in EU goods only, without checks or WTO tariffs

The waiver would avoid having to wave through also meat from US, China & even Zimbabwe

Food imports from the RoI could be directed to certain ports which could be kept clear of other traffic
So, theoretically possible, if the govt could get its act together and organise this in time

I expect something would go wrong
and even the govt obviously expect problems at Calais etc, or they wouldn't now be scrabbling around to organise The Dunkirk Flotilla Mk2, or maybe The Dunkirk Ro-Ro Flotilla

Of course, none of that even touches the problems of Uk exports

  • RN says all UK agri / farming exports to the EU will stop totally for 6 months, because this is how long it takes for a 3rd country to get on their databases Then I suppose it would be trade on WTO terms for UK exports
clearsommespace · 26/10/2018 19:34

Thanks Kitten. From my experience of Calais I felt it reflected the differing local views quite well.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2018 19:34

LeClerc Does that bill also include continuing the current EU scheme for those UK expats who are state pensioners ?
(The scheme is that each country refunds the healthcare for its pensioner expats to the host healthcare system)

Otherwise, the govt can expect an influx of a few 100,000 UK pensioners returning "home" - where they often no longer have a home - needing homes, doctors, hospitals etc

Tories on the HoC Brexit Committee seem to be criticising Ni farmers for having believed repeated statements by May and her ministers that there would be a deal

The Belfast telegraph reported this - I wonder if more NI unionists will start to get fed up of being ruled by a govt of arrogant incompetents who obviously despise them

The 2 Tory MPs are being quite rude

https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/price-of-cheese-and-beef-will-rise-after-nodeal-brexit-northern-ireland-business-leaders-warn-37454529.html

Sir Christopher said businesses had been aware that the UK was leaving the EU for more than two years and questioned the lack of preparation.
"Nobody has ever given any guarantee that there would be a deal, why is it that none of you seem to have been making any contingency plans?," he asked
.
His fellow Conservative MP Stephen Bone echoed Sir Christopher's comments.
"You've known we've been coming out of the EU since June 2016 and now you're just waking up with five minutes to go that there might not be a deal.
You've not done a pretty good job have you?," he said.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/10/2018 19:46

A Tory Brexiter MP saying "You've not done a pretty good job have you?," 🤭

Might be better to direct that rudeness at their own govt

Exclusive: UK derivatives clearers may get no-Brexit deal reprieve - EU document

Well that reduces the chance of a financial crisis
Reprieve is "temporary" meaning it gives EU financial institutions time to hoover up the busoness

Also looks like existing cross-border insurance policies will continue - good news for UK expats:

  • those expats with private UK-based health insurance; although I see my insurance firm became an Allianz partner recently
  • those expats with UK private pensions

uk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu-markets-exclusive/exclusive-uk-derivatives-clearers-may-get-no-brexit-deal-reprieve-eu-document-idUKKCN1MY2G5

The European Union might grant temporary permission for clearing houses in Britain to continue serving EU customers if there is a no-deal Brexit next March, an EU document seen by Reuters showed.
...
cross-border insurance contracts would “remain valid and the performance of existing obligations under the contract would generally continue to take place”
...
“The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority is working with national authorities to address residual risks for certain EU27 policyholders,”

This been posted? Various politicians asking good old barnier to consider extending article50 for a People's vote.

The article seems almost optimistic Shock

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-eu-referendum-final-say-new-vote-sign-petition-michel-barnier-a8603331.html

Can we write to barnier asking to back moves to extend A50 for a ref?

Im not above begging or pleading.

Quietrebel · 26/10/2018 20:09

Apologies if this has already been linked but surely now the penny should start to drop with regards to who will profit from brexit (clue: most definitely not the uk)

BCF
The tech note is reported in the independant now. I re read it and I am more confused than when I started, maybe a more analytical mind can make more sense of it.
Also reports on there of Vince Cable and Sadiq 'telling' Mr Barnier to delay A50 so a referendum could be squeezed in. I think the MN term is CF?

This been posted? Various politicians asking good old barnier to consider extending article50 for a People's vote

I’m sure I heard Sadiq Khan talking about this on LBC today. It’s the most optimistic I’ve felt in a while. Who knows if it will work, i get the sense the Brexiter MP have had a recent brush with reality and are a bit bruised by it. Would they agree to an extension. Farridge will do his nut.

Hazardswan · 26/10/2018 20:16

leclerc aye their CF really they should be asking with heads down and humbled but I am willing to go to Brussels and act as a wailing women who falls at the feet of Tusk and Barnier to make for it.

_ Donald Trump fan Cesar Sayoc arrested in connection with US 'Make America Great Again' bombs_

What a surprise

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/man-arrested-over-us-maga-bomber-spree-a3973156.html

Cesar Sayoc, 56, from Aventura, Florida was arrested by federal authorities in connection with a spate of bombs and suspicious packages sent to high profile liberal targets including Barack Obama and the Clintons.

According to his Facebook page, Sayoc is a Trump fan who posted pictures and videos of himself at one of the President’s rallies in October 2016.
