Verhofstadt said he was "optimistic" that a deal could be reached "in the coming weeks in the interests of the Union and in the interests of the UK.

He urged EU negotiators to offer a right to "unhindered onward movement" for UK nationals living in the EU, allowing them to move home and work between the 27 states, in return for a "right of lifelong return" for EU citizens currently in Britain who move away from the country in future.

I was in Downing Street and they are ready to go for such a trade-off," said Mr Verhofstadt. "If the Council were to push for such a solution, it is a trade-off that is possible.

From the European but covered elsewhere too.

So basically if you are from the EU living here you can come and go as you please.

If you are from the UK living in the EU now you can come and go in any of the 27 countries.

If you are from the UK and live in the UK your movement will be restricted after Brexit.

Fucking marvellous.

dr2: right , I get your logic, like if you see someone in trouble, you do nothing if it's not your fault, nice (not)

BCF: Merkel's ploy with the refugees was deliberate - she knew that by the time people complained enough to get it all stopped it would be too late, ie. they'd already be in the country

and that's exactly what happened

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 12:00

Refugee scares helped LEAVE, i.e. UKIP, not the Tories

Both the Tory vote and the Labour vote are split over Brexit

Of course she won't face trial over political mistakes
Any more than the Tories will over all those British citizens who have actually died as a result of welfare cuts and UC

Leave politicians won't face trial after Brexit, when the economy is wrecked and the UK is poorer.

Politicians don't face trial when they screw up; they just lose their job

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 12:04

She made a decision to deal with the refugees who were already within Europe and already a problem
They couldn't just be exterminated

Where she screwed up, was not realising that letting them in would encourage a lot more to come

So the voters have been punishing her ever since

threetrees · 29/10/2018 12:07

BCF: true, her actions did likely aid the Leave cause, but doing incredibly dumb actions must still be paid for by the perpetrator

she is no way let off the hook

threetrees · 29/10/2018 12:08

BCF: fairly basic logic that it would encourage others, hence my claim that she most certainly knew what she was doing

threetrees · 29/10/2018 12:09

and having your beneifts cut is in no way comparable to murder or rape and you know it

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 12:16

btw, she has not actually "resigned" just said she won't stand for chancellorship in 2021
or as party leader in the next party elections at the end of this year.

That was totally expected here, although it does seem a shock to the UK - I shouldn't be surprised at that, though.
She's run out of ideas and has gone on way too long

Looks like she'll remain chancellor though until 2021 - and that was all that was in question here:
people thought she might quit the chancellorship at the same time

If she sticks to this, then she'll be chancellor until well after Brexit, in fact until after the end of the post-Brexit transition period - if there ever is one.

However, she won't want to waste any remaining political capital on the UK
So all those Brexiters who claimed that Merkel would push the EU into giving better terms need to review their plans

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 12:20

Cutting benefits to people who have no money is of course directly hurting those people or causing their death
The UN Commissioner for human rights keeps criticising the UK govt over the harm ir does directly to its own people

Letting in refugees, because you and your party are heavily based on Christian values - hence the "C" in CDU - is nowhere near a crime under international law.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 12:27

If the UK economy crashes after a no deal Brexit, that gives Corbyn and McDonnel their best chance to get in with very leftwing policies

Without this, they wouldn't have had a chance

I wonder if they would attempt to put Tories on trial for the deaths of British people who died of hunger or cold, or from diabetes because they couldn't afford to eat

There is a criminal offence of "Misconduct in Public Office"

or maybe that would be for those Brexit Tories whose wealthy friends stand to gain billions from Brexit, by betting against UK business and Sterling

Very interesting times ahead
At least they would reverse the rollback of the welfare state and tax the rich more

Brexit may indeed be a total reset button for the UK
Reversing the damage that Thatcher did

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 12:34

imo, the only time that politicians can be in practice face criminal charges, is if they can be shown to have directly gained financially from bad decisions,

either by taking money, shares, directorships from the hedge-funders and vulture capitalists
or by directly making profits themselves from hedging etc

Maybe some of those wealthy Tory MPs who have moved their investments abroad, to bet against the UK,
while in the HoC continuing to push policies that will make them money at the expense of the rest of teh country

A couple of weeks ago I stopped my car in the middle of a busy road to provide cover for a small boy and his dog (Springer Spaniel). The dog had been hit by a car and the boy was understandably upset. Once I'd ascertained the boy was unhurt I went to the car behind mine to explain what had happened. I held the traffic for 3 or 4 minutes until the boy's dad arrived.

There's your answer. Now provide your answer to my question. I know you won't, because BeLeavers never do, unless it's to post non-sequitors, insults or trite soundbites. I'd love you to prove me wrong.
