Verhofstadt said he was "optimistic" that a deal could be reached "in the coming weeks in the interests of the Union and in the interests of the UK.

He urged EU negotiators to offer a right to "unhindered onward movement" for UK nationals living in the EU, allowing them to move home and work between the 27 states, in return for a "right of lifelong return" for EU citizens currently in Britain who move away from the country in future.

I was in Downing Street and they are ready to go for such a trade-off," said Mr Verhofstadt. "If the Council were to push for such a solution, it is a trade-off that is possible.

From the European but covered elsewhere too.

So basically if you are from the EU living here you can come and go as you please.

If you are from the UK living in the EU now you can come and go in any of the 27 countries.

If you are from the UK and live in the UK your movement will be restricted after Brexit.

Fucking marvellous.

The EU has been investing in fighting terrorism and it has been repeated again and again that leaving the EU is not good for UK security. It's not an issue effectively addressed as a single country as it doesn't respect borders (One of many such global issues). You are mixing things up here.

DoctorTwo · 29/10/2018 08:46

the questions (sic) was, 'what are they doing about it now'

lol. Why should Germany 'do' anything about a problem they didn't cause. Wht aren't you asking what the US and UK doing about Daesh? And WTF has this got to do with Brexit? Nowt, it's just classic Brexiteer distraction.

DoctorTwo · 29/10/2018 08:48

Why not Wht. Bloody inaccurate fingers.

Mistigri · 29/10/2018 09:04

Nothing to do with Brexit and nowt to do with citizens' rights either.

Random changes of topic, derailing and weird obsessions with powerful women (cf: "lock her up) are straight out of the alt-right playbook.

Merkel listening to the overwhelming majority of Germans who have ever since WW2 been completley against getting involved in foreign wars.
Democracy

Joining the US in its murdurous wars to creatre yet more millions of refugees would be totally against what the German public want.
They don't want to be a US poodle, to sacrifice thousands of their young soldiers only to leave the countries far more unstable than when they started

At least 2 generations in Germany were traumatised by what their country had done and then the consequences of much of the country then being reduced to rubble
They had to rebuild from scratch and they never want to go their again.

Merkel is a conservative, an old-fashioned one, meaning she wants to preserve lives and the social contract,
also not sell off the family silver - whole areas of business and infrastructure - to let vulture capitalists loot, as they have done in the UK

UK Tories are fake conservatives - they want to tear everything down, for the billionaire oligarchs to loot

Tories now are nihilists, who only want to destroy

Time to return to One Nation Conservatism, like that under Harald McMillan, which was the last time when they were very popular in Scotland and Northern England
The Tory Party now is just the Nasty Party of the Home Counties

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 10:43

This is how the political map of Britain looked in the 1950s,
when One Nation Conservatism was winning about 50% of the total vote in the General Elections and was genuinely a national party of the people:

(for those in the US or Russia, blue = Tory, red = Labour)

If you are a Brit abroad you will have more rights post Brexit than if you are in the UK
jasjas1973 · 29/10/2018 10:49

@threetrees you lose the argument on German defence spending and then divert to German forces abroad...
We are leaving the EU, so why would a isolationist threetrees or indeed UK care what Germany does?

Doctor 2 : classic dodge

hmm... I guess it's ok for Merkel's (though not anymore, Hallelujah!) CDU Party to do nothing as she can just point fingers instead - very statesman like, not

BCF wrote: 'Merkel listening to the overwhelming majority of Germans '

you do realise that MERKEL HAS JUST RESIGNED!

too right, about time, now hopefully she'll face the German equivalent of impeachment! not a moment too soon

threetrees · 29/10/2018 11:02

LOL - Dr Aisha, I'd say that's a little off topic - still I reckon you could help these Remainers out with a spell or two , to keep us in the EU

meanwhile , in reality, the clock is ticking down to liberation day - March 2019!

threetrees · 29/10/2018 11:04

BCF : she harks back to the good ol days of the 1950's - hilarious, as I thought that was the standard jibe for UKippers

the good old dayS, one nation Toryism LOL , just like Angela Merkel who has now HAD TO RESIGN as leader of her party due to being BATTERED IN THE POLLS

Peregrina · 29/10/2018 11:18

Pity that May didn't resign after being battered in her election.

threetrees · 29/10/2018 11:21

hey, I agree - i think we are on the same page at last - rejoice!

Peregrina · 29/10/2018 11:26

Not going to rejoice with you threetrees.

threetrees · 29/10/2018 11:29

Angela: Auf Wiedersehen, Pet !!

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 11:45

I've been expecting it

  • politicians nearly all go on too long; she's been there for years and got stale

However, if she'd tries to involve Germany more in foreign wars, she would never have lasted her first 3 months

If you knew anything about German politics you'd realise that making Germany into the US poodle, like the UK,
would be the kiss of death for any successor

The reason for her resignation had nothing to do with the public wanting more wars

In fact, her successors are likely to roll back even on the support Merkel gave to the US and UK
That support was VERY unpopular in Germany

Also, the most important thing for the UK:
80% of the German public do NOT want more concessions to the UK over Brexit

The new leader will want to build up support for the CDU again, so they are certainly not going to help the UK

threetrees · 29/10/2018 11:48

Merkel has been outed due to her disastrous and hugely unpopular policy of allowing in 2 million refugees to Germany, and hence wider Europe

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 11:52

Merkel was the nearest the Tories had to a friend behind the scenes over Brexit

Even before the referendum, they had been depending on her to pressure the EU to give more concessions
She couldn't - because her position was too weak

That's why it's so silly to be glad she's been weak for the last couple of years:
it meant she had no political capital to spare to help the UK

In the past, she has gone out of her way to help UK conservatives behind the scenes.
her successor will have no such interest

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 11:53

So ?
It enabled your Brerxit, so why are you sorry

DoctorTwo · 29/10/2018 11:54

Classic dodge

In what way? Why should they help solve a problem we helped cause?

You're just demonstrating that arguing with Brexiteers is like playing chess against a pigeon: it scatters all the pieces and shits on the board.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 11:54

Are you angry that her actions increased the Leave vote ?
Without those refugees and the scare stories, Leave would not have won
There would have been no Brexit

threetrees · 29/10/2018 11:56

sorry? err I@m actually very glad she's had to resign

hopefully she'll next face trial for her crimes

and I couldn't give a jot if she's 'helped' the Tories or not , they are little better than Labour

BigChocFrenzy · 29/10/2018 11:56

Merkel listened to the overwhelming number of Germans about getting involved in unnecessary wars
She didn't listen until too late over letting in refugees

That's what happens when you do something that most of the country is against, or that they oppose after the event
