I keep reading post about brexit And prepping and they seem to be crazy. Why are people creating so much hysteria around this. I can’t see how it would be beneficial to other countries to let it get in the state some posters are suggesting.

it’s just a very small fraction left.
The Irish border issue is hardly a "very small fraction".

I don't think ANYONE voted in the referendum to annihilate the Good Friday agreement.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 25/10/2018 16:41

I think plenty of people don’t understand or don’t care about the GFA. Some of them are sitting in the HoC.

Maldives2006 · 25/10/2018 16:48

Yes but people have voted to be independent to have control back. If we can’t even plan to have enough stocks of essential lifesaving medicines then countries are not going to be lining up to do trade deals with us are they.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 25/10/2018 16:58

The only thing it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.

Ah. So now people who want to leave a political block, as well as being stupid, ignorant, easily conned, deserving of starvation and death and not worthy of being allowed to vote, they are now also evil.

Far be it for me to make assumptions about Moussemousse's intentions but I would draw a very different interpretation of that phrase. We all know the referendum was plagued by lies and misinformation. Regardless of the way anyone voted, if you are happy to sit back and accept a result based on those lies and misinformation then, yes, you are letting evil flourish, for the corruption of our democratic values is indeed evil.

Motheroffourdragons why didn't people think about the Irish border? Or Gibraltar? Or the practicalities of customs arrangements? Or how we would get enough workers for the agricultural, hospitality, health & social care industries? Or how we would work cross-border on scientific projects? Or the impact on British migrants living in the EU? Or how our voice would be heard on important issues like climate change, antibiotic resistance, the migrant crisis? Or food prices? Or how we would negotiate hundreds of favourable free trade agreements?
I could go on but you get my gist.
This is why I think Leave voters did not use their brains when they voted, because I still can't see any reason good enough for leaving that counters all the above. The Referendum was the biggest most serious decision we were asked to take as the voting public. And to think people didn't try to get their heads around it, infuriates me.
And the Irish Border question and the link with the GFA was talked about - people just didn't care.

While we are sharing petitions, the final say one is approaching one million signatures Smile

I've signed that one. Don't forget, letters to PM 9th November demanding a People's Vote. Get everybody you know (who agrees) to write one.

I don't think ANYONE voted in the referendum to annihilate the Good Friday agreement.

Can't help feeling that the DUP, who under the confidence and supply deal hold the balance of power In Westminster , would not be sad to see the last of the Good Friday / Belfast Agreement.

There again, any countries considering negotiating a trade deal with the UK, might thin' twice about striking a deal with a country that signed up to the GFA, an international agreement then seemed to forget about its provisions when deciding to leave the EU.

SarfE4sticated · 27/10/2018 12:41

Someone I follow on Twitter (forgotten who) said "if all of the 700,000 joined the LibDems, imagine what a message it would send Corbyn and May". I'm going to, just because I feel it's the only way anyone is actually going to listen. Am beginning to feel quite desperate about it now.

RedneckStumpy · 27/10/2018 13:08

Yesterday I spoke to my parents who still live in the UK. They have accepted that there fate is sealed. There is no point in protesting, it won’t change anything. The UK is a dead man walking.

jasjas1973 · 27/10/2018 14:24

I don't agree with this at all.

Politicians need to get elected, failing that, they ensure their party will, writing to your MP, signing petitions, supporting/voting LibDem, all sends the message that we are not happy and wont be voting Tory.

If the opinion polls went from 54/46 to say 80/20 for Remain, May would be changing tack faster than an Americas Cup yacht.

I agree but so many people STILL love Brexit (or rather hate the EU and foreigners), they can only see sunlit uplands and unicorns on the horizon.

Ta1kinpeace · 27/10/2018 17:54

Brexit was caused by Whitehall

  • austerity
  • centralisation
  • privatisation
  • house prices / rental prices

sadly Brexit will make all of them worse

mrcharlie · 27/10/2018 17:57

Wow OP
They say ignorance is bliss, But I suspect 2019 (and on) will be anything but blissful
Enjoy your dreams because what's coming will be anything but.

SarfE4sticated · 27/10/2018 18:02

I agree with Ta1kinpeace it's much easier to be welcoming to newcomers when you have a home you can afford and hope for the future. I blame austerity completely for this, and the right wing press too. I really hope we can find a way out of this because I find the future terrifying at the moment. DH and I are in jobs that (hopefully) won't be too badly affected by Brexit, but I hate to think of what is to come.

Ta1kinpeace · 27/10/2018 18:09

If the UK leaves the single market and there is a return to Customs Clearance on shipments from the EU there will be absolute chaos in Kent.
I used to work for a Clearance Agent in Dover Docks (I still have my photo ID)
The buildings we worked in a re mostly gone.
The HUGE areas where the lorries and vans parked up while awaiting checks have been used for the Cruise terminal and berths 7 and 8
The Channel tunnel was built without customs clearance space

If there is a hard Brexit, all freight would probably have to be banned from the Tunnel as there is no secure area to store vehicles.
Then large parts of Dover Docks would need to be cordoned off
and lots of old gits like me re hired PDQ to do the forms
oh, except the HMRC computer systems would not cope with such a massive increase in load

The Government, the NAO, Dover Harbour Board and the Ferry companies all agree with me by the way Grin
