So, No Deal looking likelier.
I'm having trouble coping with the catastrophe in my head alongside living daily life among the majority of my friends/family who:

  1. Don't think/talk about Brexit much. (Possibly find it a bit alarming now and shut it out.)
  2. Don't understand the difference between deal and no deal.
  3. Can't believe the Govt would let something really bad happen.
  4. Shut down belief when I mention food shortages, grounded flights.
  5. Were Remainers but are now resigned that it will happen, and don't really understand that there many different ways of it happening. Etc.

If there was massively more awareness/public push against hard Brexit, the Govt might have pause to rethink.

So how can we create awareness? What simple steps can we recommend to the huge, unaware majority?

Any recommendations, Westministenders?

Unfortunately I can see that many places in the UK will become rather unpleasant a while after a 'no deal' Brexit. Mr Hammonds 'estimates' may well be wrong, it doesn't matter in some ways, but with the departure of significant chunks of manufacturing, either immediately or over a period of a few years as BMW/Nissan/Airbus etc wind down where is the treasury going to find enough money to actually support and rebuild the economy bearing in mind I don't think we are back to pre 2008 'crash' levels. The City is geared up for 'financial services' (towering blocks of fancy offices) which may drastically downsize upon exiting. At least with the old mills 'up north' the buildings could be repurposed to alternative manufacture or 'fashionable apartments'. Will HS2 actually be necessary at all?
Did I miss the 'leaver's' grand plan for the future, setting out how it will all work and be financed, or is my unicorn sitting on it?
Does Mr Hammonds projection factor in the departure of so much manufacturing/services, given that so much is reliant on confidence in the market?
If the Brexit news is a bit light today, what did the Chinese comment about the French Revolution @DGR ?

I'm beginning to think we need 'Our Graham' from the original Blind date with Cilla, to give us a run down of the current state of play.
At the moment it is difficult to see whether it is 'Bad', Very bad, or really really bad.

Theresa May @theresa_may
John McCain was a great statesman, who embodied the idea of service over self. It was an honour to call him a friend of the UK. My deepest sympathies go to his family, and the American people.

woman11017 I LOVE the Danish Sperm Story.

The idea that we will have a shortage of wankers after Brexit is hilarous.

There are questions about its worth pre-Brexit.

Plenty of wankers red just not producing the goods.

Thomasinaa · 26/08/2018 11:12

Why has Raab said publicly that No Deal is very unlikely?

RedToothBrush · 26/08/2018 11:27

Jim Pickard @PickardJE
the sunny uplands sound great

Contract for Motorway Portaloos for Lorry Drivers.

...but there will be no food shortages....

@Thomasina
He did say it, sweating profusely and in a not to convincing way, leading to a suspicion he may not be telling all the truth.
Of course, HS2 is only for 'posh' people to work in the city. No one else would be able to afford the (presumably high) fares it will take to make it anything other than a financial disaster.
Spending a fraction of that amount (not wanting to be greedy) on getting the railway network further outside London, in places where there are factories, working properly with decent modern rolling stock and electrified might have been a nice idea. Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds etc, the recipients of knackered old trains rehashed and with a new coat of paint after being condemned on the 'London' commuter lines.

Bodoni · 26/08/2018 11:29

Ralph Early, Professor of Food Industry at Harper Adams University, has a full-page article in the farming section of my local paper explaining how food supply works and pointing out rather mildly that “we would be wise to safeguard existing food relationships: especially long-established trade with European countries.” He hopes “our political leaders understand that their highest priority must be keeping supermarkets stocked and food on our tables. Perhaps disconcertingly, some food industry experts are not so sure this will be so.”

Experts, who needs 'em?

1tisILeClerc · 26/08/2018 11:34

@RTB,
The tight 'buggers' (UK Gov). You mean the lorry drivers get just some portaloos, not even a half decent set of buildings with washing and comfortable seating areas possibly with food available?
Provided by the 'private sector', so which 'favoured' companies are getting these contracts at inflated prices?

1tisILeClerc · 26/08/2018 11:38

Maybe, as this is MN there should be a recipe section for how to prepare and cook your unicorn.
I think it might start similar to the original instructions for rabbit stew. First catch your rabbit.

I see another thread started by a 'I'm a remainer but you are all hysterical' person has been pulled. I think we will see a lot more of those kind of threads as we get closer to a potential collapse of brexit.

I'm a remainer but you are all hysterical' new poster person

Contract for Motorway Portaloos for Lorry Drivers.

Hope hundreds will be enough. I bet the JRMs of this world have ensured some of their portfolios are invested in portaloo companies...

If nothing else, it proves that there are dark forces at work here.

Maybe MNHQ will start to believe that a lot of the Brexit debate is being manipulated Hmm

They can insist on a certain length of membership before posting in some forums,. maybe this one too ?

They will be analysing how the thread went and slightly adjusting their strategy I reckon.

SusanWalker · 26/08/2018 12:52

New tactic on that thread too. Apparently a recession is coming but it will have nothing whatsoever to do with brexit. It will all just be an unfortunate coincidence.Grin

Thankfully the ERDF paid for the upgrade of our railway. Otherwise we'd still be waiting.

1tisILeClerc · 26/08/2018 13:01

It was interesting in that if you removed some of the crass insensitivity, some of that original post had points that could be discussed and either torn to shreds or agreed with.
I have a feeling that had he/she/it posted on this thread for example and left out the 'I'm a man' and some of the words that cause upset it could have been talked about, particularly if actual references were provided there may have been some merit.

1tisILeClerc · 26/08/2018 13:09

@Susan
In the words of Monty Python, 'You lucky bastards', 2 trains an hour!
Southport to Manchester airport line, 1 per hour and then the buggers cut the bit that actually gets to the airport.
The thing is if the significant contributions from the EU for schemes like this had a bit more emphasis that it was the EU pushing it rather than Westminster, we might not be quite so deep in this mess.
