To ask if anyone know what happens with EU citizens after brexit

BlueandYellowandRed · 14/08/2018 19:26

I'm from an EU country and have been living and working in England for 6 years now.

I just looked into getting British citizenship which apparently cost £1330. It's fine if it comes down to that I'm happy to pay for it. Although might move countries again as kind of started feeling a bit unwelcome here since the whole brexit thing took off.

Anyway I was just looking at the application and it crossed my mind that there must be millions of people in the same shoes as me and I wonder what the plan is for us after brexit?

I was offered a job in the UK. I said thanks but I would have to be very desperate to want to play Russian lottery with my life and family, There are lots of countries currently hiring for positions leaving Britain now. They don't want you there and I believe after Brexit the racism, hidden or open will only increase.

InspectorIkmen · 14/08/2018 19:33

It pains me immeasurably to say this but - Go someone else. Move countries. Go someplace where the stupid and racist are not taking over. Go somewhere where there are decent honourable politicians. I'd go if I could. We are going to be so much the poorer without people like you.

InspectorIkmen · 14/08/2018 19:34

FFS - somewhere else not bloody someone else

UtterlyDesperate · 14/08/2018 19:36

Where are there decent, honourable politicians, Cetin?

smallchanceofrain · 14/08/2018 19:37

If you stay you'll be eating rats like the rest of us when the food runs out. Start hoarding now or move to another country.

Brexit has become a dog whistle for bigots and jingoistic little Englanders. I'd leave if I could. I don't like what our country is becoming.

Waits for flaming.

Hefzi · 14/08/2018 19:40

No, op, no one knows: remember, as our negotiating partners have made very clear, "nothing is decided until everything is decided".

You'd do better to approach your embassy (unless this is another of those dog whistle Brexit threads Hmm)

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 14/08/2018 19:40

I’m sorry you’re in this position OP and Clandestino. I’m afraid, like everything else surrounding the debacle that is Brexit, nobody yet knows. We’ll be in a terrible situation if all EU workers leave us. I can’t believe we’re throwing ourselves off this cliff edge. If it’s any consolation at all, you’ll be in a much better position as a citizen of an EU country than any of us will be as U.K. citizens. That’s about the only part of this that I feel sure of.

BlueandYellowandRed · 14/08/2018 19:42

Do you think it's actually going to happen? I mean next year March and that's it?! There is no actual plan for it and anyone I try to talk to about (voted leave or remain doesn't matter) had absolutely no idea what is going to happen. I just don't understand what's happening

OP posts:
LeftRightCentre · 14/08/2018 19:43

No one knows. I'd jump ship whilst I could.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 14/08/2018 19:44

There's 3 million EU citizens living in UK. Many of whom who have been here ages and have settled and have families here...
About 7-10 million people (Inc their families are impacted)

There are many boards to help folk on Facebook:
There's also a brilliant book put together called
In Limbo (EU folk in UK)
And In Limbo too (UK folk in EU)

oblada · 14/08/2018 19:44

I'm pretty sure it will be much cheaper than that OP. It's meant to be a straightforward application. To stay I mean not for citizenship. I don't want citizenship, happy with the right to stay permanently :) I don't get the urge to move, everywhere the extreme right is moving up sadly, it may not be different in another country. Anyway I believe in the local community more than the country and I'm happy where I am..m so I shall stay :)

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 14/08/2018 19:46

Was just going to post same link as above. You'll have until 2021 to apply for settled status.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 14/08/2018 19:46

Many of us are actively engaged i
Demonstrating/writing letters and communicating with Brussels, come over and join us!

BlueandYellowandRed · 14/08/2018 19:46

My partner is Irish and we don't have any kids. I think he feels the same as me. We might move or not, I don't know. For him it'd be very easy to live abroad and still work in his industry for me it's a tad bit more difficult. I also only speak my native language and English so what can i do with that elsewhere??

OP posts:
FlatPackFurnitureCompAnyone · 14/08/2018 19:49

You don’t need citizenship in order to stay in a country indefinitely, only ILR/permanent residence or equivalent. (I’m non-EU and live elsewhere in the EU as a permanent resident.)

I’m sorry you’re in this position OP, I know the stress from experience! Some great links above.

Re: citizenship, not all countries allow dual citizenship so do check that your own allows it if you haven’t already.

Brew and some sympathy, it’s a rubbish situation.

Clairetree1 · 14/08/2018 19:49

nobody knows anything

That is the reality of the situation

UK and EU seem to be more or less at a deadlock

The rest of the world have their feet up and are munching their popcorn and waiting for the entertainment

FlatPackFurnitureCompAnyone · 14/08/2018 19:52

Cross-posted; Irish partner gives you a lot more options so that’s a good thing.

English will still get you a long way in some places, though it’s difficult without knowing your industry. The Netherlands has a large number of international companies with English as the working language.

BlueandYellowandRed · 14/08/2018 19:56

I'm going to miss England if I'll have to leave. I very much respect that I wasn't born to be British but have treated this country as my second home. It's a bit sad isn't it ? I'm not stressed about it but I want to know what's going to happen.

OP posts:
HateIsNotGood · 14/08/2018 19:58

It's sad you feel 'unwanted' OP - I'm an EU Leaver in a Leave Vote area (too far away for any buses to spout lies at us). A lot of my friends have left here and moved to the EU for a better standard of life and they too feel your uncertainty.

There are a few EU nationals that have remained where I live (although many have come and gone pre and post Brexit as they found they couldn't make enough to make it worth their while staying here due to the low local wages and no cheap housing) and I treat every neighbour as equal; nationality doesn't come into it.

I haven't noticed anyone else treating any non-UK neighbour any differently either.

If you want to stay, then stay - if you think you will have a better life elsewhere then look into that.

Everyone feels the 'uncertain' vibe - a lot of us are just going to roll with it.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 14/08/2018 20:01

It is not cheap... I think my pal's citizenship was almost £3000....every step of the way there are fees... For the initial citizenship test /for the residency card/pay to apply for citizenship rather than residency/then pay for the citizenship ceremony and finally the passport application. All elements are compulsory if you want the same rights as British citizens

InspectorIkmen · 14/08/2018 20:01

Where are there decent, honourable politicians, Cetin?

My mistake. I meant to say NOT the likes of Johnson, Gove et al.

Wink for the ‘Cetin’ though 😋😋

toomuchtooold · 14/08/2018 20:11

I don't know what the hell the plan is... there's a significant chance that there's no plan. Brexiteers I know are all like "it'll be fine, provisions will be made" but really, based on the last 2 years of incompetence, anything could happen. We are British living in Germany but luckily also have DH's Swiss nationality now as well (I finally shifted myself to apply for it leading up to the Scottish independence referendum in case Scotland crashed out of the EU... ironic now). If I were you OP, if you really want to stay in the UK I would get the passport, although I hear that that is even more of a shitshow than it used to be as well - but no, I wouldn't stay in the UK without a UK passport now.

oblada · 14/08/2018 20:11

The proposed fees are 65pounds - for settled status.
Why would anyone want British citizenship? Settled status gives the same right as we have now under EU so since I didn't plan on acquiring British citizenship before I don't see why I would now...

toomuchtooold · 14/08/2018 20:13

Here OP, is your nationality indicated by the colours in your username? My friend is Romanian and after the Brexit vote the only cheer we could muster was the fact that her British DH can now tell people he married her for her EU passport Smile
