To ask if anyone is considering stockpiling

Just that really, given that the government asking industry to stockpile food and medicines has been all over the news in the past week, I was wondering how many people are planning on stockpiling themselves and if so what are you going to stockpile and how much?
TBH my main concern is long term medication that I’m on, but as it’s only available on prescription and Dr wouldn’t let me order more than I need, so there’s nothing I can do about that anyway!

eightfacesofthemoon at lot of people spent a lot of time working on it (more than a decade). If only we all knew someone who worked on solving Brexit to the same level.

@PestymcPestFace
@bellinisurge
Guys I am not disbelieving you all!! I am seriously curious. I don’t know anyone in RL who had anything to do with it. And on 2 threads today I feel like I’ve seen dozens of folk talking about it.

Or was it just you two repeatedly ??!! WinkWink

BakedBeans47 · 28/07/2018 22:34

No. Haven't got the money. Haven't got the storage space.

This.

It’s appalling that the country could be in a position where people have to consider this. Is this really what people wanted or expected when they voted leave?

QuiteUnfitBit · 28/07/2018 22:36

How come everyone on mumsnet has a cousin who worked tirelessly to prevent the milenial bug
My DH worked tirelessly. I've not mentioned it before. Grin

eightfacesofthemoon · 28/07/2018 22:37

@QuiteUnfitBit
You married your cousin!!??

bellinisurge · 28/07/2018 22:38

Dammit @eightfacesofthemoon - you are so smart you've found out the big lie. Gosh I'm so busted.

QuiteUnfitBit · 28/07/2018 22:42

Grin [it's not illegal... but I didn't...]

cheesemongery · 28/07/2018 22:55

I know what would happen to me - my tin opener would break. There would of course be a tin opener shortage.

I'd knock on the neighbours door to politely request borrowing hers, she'd give me a 'look' and say 'got tins 'ave ya?' To which, whilst caught in a flummox would reply 'maybe' or 'just a couple'. She'd completely death stare me until I lied that actually I had none, I just wanted to open a bottle of beer, but it's fine - I can cold turkey.

Then I wouldn't even be able to do that Bear Grylls thing (?) where you vigorously rub your can on a cement surface to open it as next door would immediately know I had some economy baked beans that I wasn't willing to share with her - or my children probably. Oh you like beans now do you? Tough shit! My beans...

Then I'd find out that one of the kids had actually broken the tin opener on purpose, blaming it on mercury poisoning after too much tuna, so I'd kick them both out to learn the art of foraging,

I can't imagine I'd be too fussed about seeing them when they turn up with an elderberry from 'up top park'. I'd probably just pretend I didn't know them and send them next door.

Love Brexit.

How come everyone on mumsnet has a cousin who worked tirelessly to prevent the milenial bug That’s what I would really like the answer to

I’ve mentioned my cousin on a couple of threads. I have no idea what is role was because I was a teen when it was being worked on but my grandma is very much of the opinion that he stopped it all, all by himself GrinWink

BMW6 · 28/07/2018 23:10

cheesemongers you need to stockpile tin openers.......

PigletJohn · 28/07/2018 23:28

I have no cousins involved in Y2K and took care to avoid it myself, because I felt it was not a good speciality for a long-term career.

cheesemongery · 28/07/2018 23:29

But tin openers are all so different these days, I can't be doing with that shit. I'd rather just disown my neighbour and kids, blame it on Brexit and piss off with my Irish passport.

Or, I could just buy a couple of tin openers.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 28/07/2018 23:43

I'm planning to.

I shall then be telling my DM, who is an enthusiastic Brexiteer, that I will not be sharing my supplies with her because she brought it on herself - shouldn't have voted leave and should have stockpiled herself.

Jarstastic · 28/07/2018 23:53

No stockpiling here. I think the only things I'd possibly stock up on, if I needed them would be formula milk and medicines. I'm lucky I don't. I always have a little stock of antibiotic cream bought in other countries, as we're not allowed it OTC here.

If there was a risk to our food supplies, I suspect the government would quickly introduce low or no tariffs. We won't have to apply EU tariffs on them. I'd also think they would give financial incentives to dairy farmers.

I'd also think they would give financial incentives to dairy farmers.

Dairy farmers can't just ramp up production on a whim; it takes time. Specifically - if you got a cow pregnant tomorrow, it's a 283 day gestation period (9.3 months).
Said calf (if female) then has to be about 15 months old before first mating
That (now grown up) calf will not give milk until she herself has had her own first calf (so another 283 day pregnancy)

Basically - to up production, you have to wait for today's cows to have grandcalves, which is a minimum of a 2.75 year process. Money will not make that process faster.

Furthermore - there will be issues around capacity in milking parlours, and supplies of feedstuffs - there's already a shortage of fodder this year due to the drought. Imported foodstuffs are expensive, and may be impossible to source due to delays at the border etc. There's no point in increasing the number of dairy cows if you can't actually feed them.

RedneckStumpy · 29/07/2018 01:03

Rather than stockpiling we should be using our energies to pressure the government to stop this suicide mission.

Umm. I wouldn’t wast your effort. Just give up on the government

RedneckStumpy · 29/07/2018 01:05

We store at minimum 30L of fuel. It’s safe.

Petrol has a shelf life of 2 weeks unless you treat it (sea foam) we treat the fuel and rotate it so our stock is a max of a year old

RedneckStumpy · 29/07/2018 01:07

Will things like local milk and veg boxes with U.K. products dry up too do we think

At the beginning yes. Due to the summer we are looking at a failed harvest followed by another harsh winter. It a perfect storm for March

1forAll74 · 29/07/2018 02:00

Would the folks who have to stockpile.be happy to dish out some stockpiled stuff,in an emergency,to those who can't stockpile for various reasons ?

Would the folks who have to stockpile.be happy to dish out some stockpiled stuff,in an emergency,to those who can't stockpile for various reasons

Nope. If you do that, then it would soon get around that you have extra food. That way trouble comes. If I thought someone was starving, I would sneak food to them, without them knowing it was me. For example, hide it in their garden and stick a note through their door.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 29/07/2018 02:27

Almost everyone can start buying a couple of extra tins a week to store. I'll stockpile on behalf of a very elderly relative, but other than that tbh no.

Most of those who end up in trouble will not be the "can't stockpile" they will be the "won't stockpile" because they're diehard leavers - and they've brought it on themselves.

RedneckStumpy · 29/07/2018 03:09

Would the folks who have to stockpile.be happy to dish out some stockpiled stuff,in an emergency,to those who can't stockpile for various reasons ?

Absolutely not. The moment it gets out that you have a stockpile an armed mob will over run your home and your dead.

huha · 29/07/2018 03:25

This is honestly one of the most hyped up hysterical threads I've read on here to date.
