Westministenders: A LOOOONNNGGGGGGGG Hot Summer

May has officially demoted Raab and the Brexit Department to just being responsible for practical implimentation in the UK and not negogitions.

This shouldn't be a surprise, its been the case in reality for some time, much to David Davis annoyance.

The official government position now seems to be scare the shit out of everyone about the possibility of No Deal in order to force the EU to make a deal. Jeremy Hunt has been dutifully spelling this out, by talking about an 'accidental' Brexit.

The government are already outsourcing responsibility for this potential eventuality to industy and business by telling them they need to stockpile food in order to keep supply lines going. This WILL mean price rises will start to happen soon. It also means there is no coordinated government plan and if businesses can't afford to do this as its heavily dependant on having sufficient cash flow in reserve to be able to do it, or don't want to, then you, me and everyone else is going to be well and truly on their own. Whilst the public are not being told to stockpile, its hard to justify not doing so, if this is the current government line.

The government has also done a u-turn on when the repeal of the European Communities Act will come into force. They fought hard to have it fixed for 29th March 2019. Thats now been rolled back to Dec 2020. This is fine, but in practice, makes no difference what so ever if we have no deal or the EU refuse to honour a transition deal on the terms the UK want. The ERG will also go nuts at it and try to get May to roll back on it.

Raab has also made a point of saying that if we don't have a deal by October (rather than midnight 29th March 2019) we are going into No Deal land by default.

Parliament has now broken up for the summer, with May surviving, so things are likely to be a little quieter for a few weeks, but come September this is all going to blow up with avengance.

If you think the last few weeks have been a rollercoaster, just wait for the Autumn.

I'd rather be a hammer than a nail ....

Peregrina · 25/07/2018 17:01

Could Brexiteers swallow a fuller customs union that looks - as @DavidHenigUK points out - like it could go on for a very long time.

Who do you mean by Brexiters - the ERG group of Grease-Smug and Co.? No. The ordinary Leave who thinks that a Norway ish option looks OK (except that Norway isn't in the CU.)? Yes, probably.

TheElementsSong · 25/07/2018 17:02

I'm totally on that traitor list. And proud of it, too.

DGRossetti · 25/07/2018 17:04

If I could be bothered, I'd ask the BBC when Brexit dropped below the fold.

They should publish a breakdown of the license fee, so I can work out how much to deduct for "news" coverage. Seems water on Mars is more important than Brexit. Or am I missing a subliminal message here.

(Goes full Brian Blessed .... sorry BRIAN BLESSED)

I WANT TO GO TO MARS. WHY WON'T THEY LET ME GO TO MARS ?

God it's hot.

IS. THIS. FOR. REAL? Shock

The fact that the UK government is now stockpiling blood and food for the increasingly likely possibility of a no-deal #Brexit next year should be comforting, says Theresa May.

Feeling comforted?

prettybird · 25/07/2018 18:08

I'm a traitor with a German name and a supporter of Scottish Independence Shock

I'm doomed Grin unless they choose to round us up charge us alphabetically, in which case I'm safe as we'll gave got our independence by the time they get to me Wink

ClashCityRocker · 25/07/2018 18:12

I once threw up on the traitors gate ride at the London dungeon.

That definitely must have got me on a list.

If we execute 48% of the population, it might solve the food crisis.... Although since the other 52% caused it, I vote that they go first.

(are traitors allowed to vote? Or are we not democratic enough? The wrong kind of citizens?)

The fact that the UK government is now stockpiling blood and food for the increasingly likely possibility of a no-deal #Brexit next year should be comforting, says Theresa May.

I think its safe to say Theresa May lost her mind some time ago - and who can blame her? Then insanity that is brexit is enough to drive anyone around the bend.

It's only the fact that she is a robot that stops her from running down the street in her underwear, with a saucepan on her head, shouting 'follow me, chaps - the unicorn went that way.'

In TMS upside down make believe world of brexitlandia it is the fact that someone is making actual concrete preparations that is comforting. The fact that those preparations are a G7 country stockpiling long life food and essential meds in order to weather the short term effects of an unnecessary and wholly self inflicted disaster simply does not compute. She doesn't have the wiring for it. Hence she is comforted by prep. And we know she doesn't have the wiring for empathy - hence why she thinks everyone else should be comforted too.

She lacks some pretty basic programming and her circuits have malfunctioned ...she cannot help the shit she spouts.

DGRossetti · 25/07/2018 18:31

I'm a little Hmm about "stockpiling blood". Sounds like a lot of bollocks.

Whole blood only lasts a week ? After that it gets spun into various components.

If it was that easy to "stockpile" then the NBTS would have done it years ago, rather than issue pleas for donors at key times. Like now (with the holidays and all sorts of foreign travel going on).

I have quite a rare blood group, so I am well aware of how the blood transfusion process works (or, given the NBTS appointment system doesn't work).

So, "stockpiling blood" - I call bollocks. It ain't happening.

frumpety · 25/07/2018 19:23

Blood products , like immunoglobulin ? not sure , although one of the companies who used to supply the NHS stopped in June I think , so already some minor supply issues. Couldn't find out where it is produced though.

Quietrebel · 25/07/2018 19:27

Don't know if this has already been shared:

OlennasWimple · 25/07/2018 19:56

I don't have "extreme loyalty to the EU", I just happen to think that as things currently stand in the world we are better off staying in the EU, trying to sort the myriad issues that we have within the UK at the moment, and pressing for reform and slimming down of the structures in Brussels. I suspect that is the position for most Remainers Confused

But then I'm currently A Citizen Of The World, so a type of traitor according to some in any case

borntobequiet · 25/07/2018 20:00

I was ?? about the water on Mars story. Especially as (I think) it was an Italian team behind it. Really not sure at the time what the BBC spin was going to be:
“pointless EU research finds water on Mars, what a waste of time” or “water on Mars, could tech wizardry help drought stricken Brit farmers”.
In the end it was “wow, cool” or some such.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 25/07/2018 20:11

I'm a dual national so am probably a traitor by default, may as well carry on

frumpety · 25/07/2018 20:14

I wanted to write to you myself over the recent NHS pay deal.
It has come to my attention in the last 24 hours that the deal was not as straightforward as we said and for that I offer you a sincere personal apology.

I’m as dismayed and angry as you are and will fight the corner of members at every turn.

In good faith, we told all members that they would receive a 3% uplift this summer. I now find that this is not the case for everyone.

I can assure you that I am demanding answers for you. In the meantime, I can only apologise for this unnecessary confusion and assure you that I am determined to resolve it.

Your elected Council and Trade Union Committee will be meeting in the next few days and I will update you on next steps.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/07/2018 20:14

May told me I'm a Citizen of Nowhere

frumpety · 25/07/2018 20:15

The above is an email from the RCN , regarding pay rise for nurses. Hasn't the government just announced pay rises for lots of other public sector workers ? Well don't get too excited Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 25/07/2018 20:19

Franklin Dehousse, Professor of EU law, former ECJ judge:

Franklin DEHOUSSE@FrDe2059
A good pleading for #EEA solution in #Brexit .
But the debate at the end will otherwise be EU North Ireland backstop or No Deal. (and backstop will win).

frumpety · 25/07/2018 20:20

Sorry for derail , just a bit miffed Angry

woman11017 · 25/07/2018 20:28

I will be loyal to the sorority of nice folks here who want a fairer Britain and a return to boring decorous informed political discourse. The notion of ' traitor' I just don't understand. (Flowers) BCF. You are the sort of citizen I want everywhere. (I can't do emojis on this phone )
