Westministenders: A LOOOONNNGGGGGGGG Hot Summer

May has officially demoted Raab and the Brexit Department to just being responsible for practical implimentation in the UK and not negogitions.

This shouldn't be a surprise, its been the case in reality for some time, much to David Davis annoyance.

The official government position now seems to be scare the shit out of everyone about the possibility of No Deal in order to force the EU to make a deal. Jeremy Hunt has been dutifully spelling this out, by talking about an 'accidental' Brexit.

The government are already outsourcing responsibility for this potential eventuality to industy and business by telling them they need to stockpile food in order to keep supply lines going. This WILL mean price rises will start to happen soon. It also means there is no coordinated government plan and if businesses can't afford to do this as its heavily dependant on having sufficient cash flow in reserve to be able to do it, or don't want to, then you, me and everyone else is going to be well and truly on their own. Whilst the public are not being told to stockpile, its hard to justify not doing so, if this is the current government line.

The government has also done a u-turn on when the repeal of the European Communities Act will come into force. They fought hard to have it fixed for 29th March 2019. Thats now been rolled back to Dec 2020. This is fine, but in practice, makes no difference what so ever if we have no deal or the EU refuse to honour a transition deal on the terms the UK want. The ERG will also go nuts at it and try to get May to roll back on it.

Raab has also made a point of saying that if we don't have a deal by October (rather than midnight 29th March 2019) we are going into No Deal land by default.

Parliament has now broken up for the summer, with May surviving, so things are likely to be a little quieter for a few weeks, but come September this is all going to blow up with avengance.

If you think the last few weeks have been a rollercoaster, just wait for the Autumn.

Brexit and leaving has become an article of faith for some. Analogies with religion and the reformation weren't hyperbole - they were pretty accurate.

The thing is - as with the reformation referendum the stirring of still waters caused a lot of people to question things they'd never needed to know before.

Even the rhetoric about remainers/traitors is straight out of the Henry VIII playbook Sad

My Leaver friend is in the mindset that it will just all work itself out. She told me the other day, she's just found out she's pregnant. Guess what her due date is. I'm worried for her.

The UK DG

but is the UK "a" nation ? I thought it was 4 nations ? Although Westminster treats Scotland like an English region ....

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 02/08/2018 09:43

^As a nation we are terminally divided
I can't see a way back^

Mrsr8 sadly I agree. This has created (or maybe exposed) divisiveness the like of which I have never been aware before.

I think liberal values have been quite prevalent in my lifetime (I’m 40). Maybe this is an unpleasant but inevitable swing towards authoritarianism.

^ This ^
It terrifies me. Yes, there have always been divides, especially between those who have little in terms or wealth and prospects and those in a more privileged position but the way the disadvantaged have been manipulated by the elite for their own personal gain is horrific. Creating scapegoats for all the perceived ills and brainwashing large swathes of the population not to believe anything written in the liberal press whilst lapping up any tosh that’s served up by the likes of the Mail - text book. I too fear we are being led into a period of ultra right-wing government.

Enough - I’d like to wake up now please...

My understanding is that the U.K. is a nation collectively, as are England, Scotland, NI and Wales separately.

GaspodeWonderCat · 02/08/2018 10:51

England & Scotland are nations, Wales a principality and NI is ...? Add in Channel Islands, Isle of Man and other assorted bits and you have the disUnited Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

But the difference between a nation, a kingdom, a principality and a.n. other is (I am sure) worthy of serious study at university (or a check on wikipedia).

Red - so sorry to hear of your moving woes.

PineappleSunrise · 02/08/2018 11:58

I'm having reach back a bit for this, but I think the UK is a state and England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are nations within it. "Nation" is linked to the identity and the culture of the people who make up the nation, while state is the federal structure and governance.

(Studied poli sci many, many years ago. I'm a bit rusty though.)

mathanxiety · 02/08/2018 17:48

Yes, it's a state, not necessarily synonymous with 'nation'.

OlennasWimple · 02/08/2018 17:55

The Channel Islands (and some other bits) are Crown Dependencies

Wales is a principality (hence no being represented on the union flag) but also a country

Northern Ireland is a province (though that word has connotations iin certain circles), but also one of the four home countries that make up the UK
