Westministenders: A LOOOONNNGGGGGGGG Hot Summer

May has officially demoted Raab and the Brexit Department to just being responsible for practical implimentation in the UK and not negogitions.

This shouldn't be a surprise, its been the case in reality for some time, much to David Davis annoyance.

The official government position now seems to be scare the shit out of everyone about the possibility of No Deal in order to force the EU to make a deal. Jeremy Hunt has been dutifully spelling this out, by talking about an 'accidental' Brexit.

The government are already outsourcing responsibility for this potential eventuality to industy and business by telling them they need to stockpile food in order to keep supply lines going. This WILL mean price rises will start to happen soon. It also means there is no coordinated government plan and if businesses can't afford to do this as its heavily dependant on having sufficient cash flow in reserve to be able to do it, or don't want to, then you, me and everyone else is going to be well and truly on their own. Whilst the public are not being told to stockpile, its hard to justify not doing so, if this is the current government line.

The government has also done a u-turn on when the repeal of the European Communities Act will come into force. They fought hard to have it fixed for 29th March 2019. Thats now been rolled back to Dec 2020. This is fine, but in practice, makes no difference what so ever if we have no deal or the EU refuse to honour a transition deal on the terms the UK want. The ERG will also go nuts at it and try to get May to roll back on it.

Raab has also made a point of saying that if we don't have a deal by October (rather than midnight 29th March 2019) we are going into No Deal land by default.

Parliament has now broken up for the summer, with May surviving, so things are likely to be a little quieter for a few weeks, but come September this is all going to blow up with avengance.

If you think the last few weeks have been a rollercoaster, just wait for the Autumn.

Why hasn’t the AIBU to be worried about the normalisation of far right politics? been moved to the Politics board?

Buteo it's because I'm spesh.

dragons don't suppose you have an Irish grandparent?

apile I’m very happy for your thread to be on AIBU.

But it demonstrates a complete lack of consistency in MNHQ policing?

MrHoolieswaistcoat · 01/08/2018 16:48

I think we should start a concerted approach to get all AIBU threads moved to the ‘correct’ topic if they are going to do this with anything to do with Brexit:
AIBU to ask what you think of this dress?
Ask for this to be moved to Style and beauty.
Long running (and excellent) thread about Trump should be in Politics.
There are several long running threads in Relationships supporting posters with alcohol problems - these should be moved to alcohol support (where nobody posts).
AIBU to think that DH’s behaviour is abusive? Should be in Relationships.
AIBU to be at the end of my tether with 13 year old DD? should be on Teenagers board.
AIBU to be worried about taking antidepressants? should be in Mental Health.
AIBU to want to rehome my cat? should be in the litter tray.
AIBU to think Love Island is a pile of shit? should be in Telly Addicts.
AIBU not to want to move to Dubai due to DH’s job? should be in Living Overseas.

etc etc etc. This is really pissing me off now. It’s ok to post in AIBU about kittens or wedding dresses or recipe suggestions but anything to do with something that is going to affect this country for decades - and affect children and young people the most - gets shunted off to somewhere that most people never look at Angry

DGRossetti · 01/08/2018 17:02

I'd say it was very consistent with maximising advertising revenue.

(I know, apparently MN has ads. Who knew Grin)

DGRossetti · 01/08/2018 17:03

Oh, and I'm guessing the Mail has AIBU on speed-dial, if that's a factor ?

DGRossetti · 01/08/2018 17:16

So we know the insulin score, after Brexit.

Anyone know about sourcing FactorVIII for haemophiliacs ?

Quietrebel · 01/08/2018 17:22

Hmm how about thread titles that don't refer to the 'b' word but are related to it like 'Aibu not to care if we get our own lane at the airport' (i would post it myself but not UK passport holder yet).

Buteo · 01/08/2018 17:24

Would still get moved PDQ I’m sure.

RedToothBrush · 01/08/2018 17:25

MNHQ don't want women being too political unless its something they are on board with, because it might affect their brand image.

Maybe MNHQ are really men ?

DGRossetti · 01/08/2018 17:36

I mean, come on ...

"MN" EMMENN .... it even sounds like "men" Hmm

If there is no deal, mother
then from 1 April, your family will have to apply as 3rd country citizens for permission to work and reside in , iirc Belgium, for you.
So, you need to have that documented permission, before you leave Belgium, or you may have trouble getting back in.

The employer of your main breadwinner should manage that, though, same as my employer will.
This is the main reason I am continuing pt work for all 2019, instead of retiring now I'm 62:
I don't know how welcome even self-supporting pensioners with private healh insurance would be.

If any chaos isn't sorted by 2010, then it would be a matter of UK expats extracting their remaining family from the UK to more civilised climes.
Much as we despise May & the cabinet, seeing their heads on spikes revolving around the London Eye would be no compensation.

I hadn't really taken in / digested that passport blog from North, but I've no plans to travel outside Germany.
Like you I expect, I would need it as an ID anyway to do everyday tasks like collecting parcels & registered letters from the post office.
I'm wondering if the permission to stay would include an alternate ID document.

btw, unless there is a disability, presumably your son could deal with transporting himself & chattels from uni, if you pay the fares and other bills - the extra cost might not be more than your air ticket.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/08/2018 19:50

Blimey, you've been exiled as well.

mathanxiety · 01/08/2018 19:53

DGRosetti, your post on evil was very apt, and now I am off to re-read C. S. Lewis' 'The Screwtape Letters'.

It was actually studying history, and in particular German and French history from 1789 to 1945 that made me consider seriously the possibility that God must exist.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/08/2018 19:57

I've just been Emailed by another small UK firm closing down because of Brexit.
Very sudden - they say the shop won't be online from Friday, so order now

There was a another small firm notified me a few months after the ref.

I had used both for years while I was in England.
They are niche (longlife high-end foods) online businesses that were hammered by the lower pound making their raw materials too costly.
In this case, people also seem to be going now for more downmarket non-organic versions, maybe belt-tightening ?

"Brexit added massive pressure from below as overnight most of our ingredients went up in price by 15% or more
and the market towards high-end luxury health products changed - with more people now preferring cheaper and still 'somewhat healthy' products we struggled to remain competitive."

BigChocFrenzy · 01/08/2018 20:02

chardonnay After a no-deal Brexit, the last thing the UK needs is having to prioritise any available entry slots for a few hundred thousand returning British pensioners,
who may be frail, with complex health & care needs,
without surviving close family or anywhere to fo in the UK,
struggling to adjust to a country they left years ago, when it was a normal prosperous advanced economy.

In other news, has anyone else seen the latest Tory sleaze? (tm)

ftalphaville.ft.com/2018/08/01/1533116572000/Grant-Shapps-resigns-from-blockchain-positions-after-FTAV-discovers-secret-pay-deal-/

Oh look, it's Grant Shapps - who's already been done once for being involved in shady moneymaking schemes on the interwebs - has been caught being illegal and unethical YET AGAIN.

It's like it's a habit he just can't kick.

HesterThrale · 01/08/2018 20:49

Wow. 80,000 people have signed this in the last 24 hours. It's not slowing down like petitions often do. Whatever you think about having another 'vote', I think this shows there's a growing level of awareness and discontent.
