Westministenders: A LOOOONNNGGGGGGGG Hot Summer

May has officially demoted Raab and the Brexit Department to just being responsible for practical implimentation in the UK and not negogitions.

This shouldn't be a surprise, its been the case in reality for some time, much to David Davis annoyance.

The official government position now seems to be scare the shit out of everyone about the possibility of No Deal in order to force the EU to make a deal. Jeremy Hunt has been dutifully spelling this out, by talking about an 'accidental' Brexit.

The government are already outsourcing responsibility for this potential eventuality to industy and business by telling them they need to stockpile food in order to keep supply lines going. This WILL mean price rises will start to happen soon. It also means there is no coordinated government plan and if businesses can't afford to do this as its heavily dependant on having sufficient cash flow in reserve to be able to do it, or don't want to, then you, me and everyone else is going to be well and truly on their own. Whilst the public are not being told to stockpile, its hard to justify not doing so, if this is the current government line.

The government has also done a u-turn on when the repeal of the European Communities Act will come into force. They fought hard to have it fixed for 29th March 2019. Thats now been rolled back to Dec 2020. This is fine, but in practice, makes no difference what so ever if we have no deal or the EU refuse to honour a transition deal on the terms the UK want. The ERG will also go nuts at it and try to get May to roll back on it.

Raab has also made a point of saying that if we don't have a deal by October (rather than midnight 29th March 2019) we are going into No Deal land by default.

Parliament has now broken up for the summer, with May surviving, so things are likely to be a little quieter for a few weeks, but come September this is all going to blow up with avengance.

If you think the last few weeks have been a rollercoaster, just wait for the Autumn.

chardonnay After a no-deal Brexit, the last thing the UK needs is having to prioritise any available entry slots for a few hundred thousand returning British pensioners,
who may be frail, with complex health & care needs,
without surviving close family or anywhere to fo in the UK,
struggling to adjust to a country they left years ago, when it was a normal prosperous advanced economy.

My comment was actually about the thread being exiled to the Brexit topic.

mother can your son stay with friends in the UK over the Easter break if need be?

Peregrina · 01/08/2018 22:10

Motherof - these are exactly the problems our European friends have been having - if they had to take out British Citizenship to stay with a spouse, then depending on the country, they might have had to sacrifice their original citizenship and then can no longer move back to help elderly relatives.

And all because a few wealthy Tories, predominantly men, are greedy and selfish for more money.

Threat of 'blind Brexit' - no deal but with the can kicked down the road indefinitely aka hell

www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/aug/01/german-sources-deny-brexit-deal-offer-amid-panic-in-remain-campaign

Hence the importance of the final say campaign to reach significant numbers. The EU is about to drop the UK 🤤

OlennasWimple · 01/08/2018 22:23

It would be so much more reassuring if the UK govt and the EU were able to say some things with certainty, even if the deal is still being negotiated.

For example, they could say that from April 2019 the UK will allow EU citizens to enter the UK without a visa for up to six months, provided that they are not seeking to work or study . The EU could say the same in reverse

The UK govt could say that it will allow EU citizens to drive on their EU driving licence for up to six months, after which they have to have got a UK driving licence in order to carry on driving here. Ditto in reverse for Brits in the EU

BigChocFrenzy · 01/08/2018 22:46

Sounds sensible, Olenna

but when a govt has a War Cabinet for Brexit
and an MEP want to prosecute Reamianers for Treason
and some has-been politicians call for war over Gibraltar / Ni / anyone refusing UK demands …

then reason has long left the building

BigChocFrenzy · 01/08/2018 22:50

mother Elderly relatives are a worry, especially to cope with no-deal alone.
Is it normal to collect students now ? I thought they travelled the world in the gap year
I certainly had to get myself to / from uni at age 18 - taught me to pack lightly !

AdaHopper · 01/08/2018 23:03

Picture of Brexit department building?

prettybird · 01/08/2018 23:07

The car that took me over to St Andrews was packed to within an inch - I even had stuff on my lap and under my legs - and that was for catered halls my mum was a bad influence Wink

Thereafter I got to/from Uni under my own steam, until I graduated.

I suspect that ds will be similar when we take him up to Aberdeen next month (eeek! ShockShockShock) - especially as the non catered Uni halls consist of flats where they don't even supply bedding, let alone cutlery, crockery or pots and pans Shock

Haven't even suggested to him yet that he should consider a bit of stockpiling! Wink

....but given he's an intelligent boy and will be studying Politics and International Relations, I'm sure he'll work out for himself if he needs to Grin

HesterThrale · 01/08/2018 23:33

Mrsr8 and mother FlowersFlowers. Deeply frustrating and worrying situations. And it's all just so UNFAIR. I feel for you.

This is also very aggravating.
The petition to the Govt - Rescind Art.50 if Vote Leave has broken Electoral Laws regarding 2016 referendum has had a response from DExEU.
It's all about 'delivering the will of the people' and completely ignores that 187,000 people are deeply concerned that there was cheating by Vote Leave.
It ironically says "This is about more than the decision to leave the EU; it is about whether the public can trust their politicians to put in place the decision they took.”
(Not about whether they can trust their politicians to act honourably...(hollow laugh)

What might come back to bite them is that the 'will of the people' is changing. If the mandate is this 'will', then this mandate is beginning to expire.

MrHoolieswaistcoat · 01/08/2018 23:57

The petition about having a vote on the final deal is over half a million now and like Hester said, it’s actually speeding up rather than slowing down which is how petitions tend to go. I can definitely sense change in the air.

lonelyplanetmum · 02/08/2018 05:50

I can definitely sense change in the air.

I so hope this is right but I think it’s too late, like someone described the unstoppable ball plummeting downhill.

People's views shifting has not been my experience this week on Facebook either. I’m on the last days of 2 weeks holiday, despite internet issues I shared that Guardian article on prescription medicines.

A couple of FB friends, one of whom is a Labour voter who I generally respect, commented on the article. Bearing in mind it was written by the president of the the Royal Pharmaceutical Society...

The posts were along the lines of “O yes remember when we could not get medicines from the pharmacy said no one ever.”and “ We were ok in the 1960’s- we’ll be ok again”.

One of the comments was from a distant acquaintance-a children’s entertainer (who I’ll never use again). He said in 1972 we were the 5th richest nation in the world, so we were not the weakest economy in Europe then -but I thought we were, hence the poor man of Europe label??

Anyway -sadly it seems to me positions are as entrenched as ever. Also from this small sample it seems to me it bears out my feeling that it’s other Labour voters whose leave views are very deeply entrenched.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/08/2018 06:22

The UK joined as the 2nd or 3rd poorest member
which is why the EU developed regional funds a few years later - MrsT insisted, to get some of "her money back"

However, the UK still has 9 of the poorest 10 regions in the EU … but also has the richest region, W London
That clearly shows that the UK's policies cause its inequality

frumpety · 02/08/2018 06:40

BigChoc that statistic that the UK has 9 of the 10 poorest regions in the EU , are you sure that is correct ? Is that across all the 28 countries ?

BigChocFrenzy · 02/08/2018 06:44

Sorry that should have been in Northern Europe, 2014
