It's official

Brexit is like an episode of Dads Army with the government, being Captain Mainwaring's trusty band of elite forces doing battle against the evil Mr Barnier.

Yesterday Parliament gave back control to the executive as it surrendered parliamentary sovereignty to Janus faced May. Grieve, it has to be said, truly did look like a broken man as he gave his speech in the commons. Not that we should have too much sympathy. After all he did just put party before country.

So where are we now? The ERG are happy. They have successfully bullied enough until everyone else gave up and folded. They now have no incentive to compromise, as they know that no one can stand up to them. They want no deal, and it's no deal they will force.

The EU are thoroughly fed up and it's difficult to see them do anything but cut us loose saying Brexit means Brexit, this is what you wanted. They have stepped up planning for no deal and their plans were already much more advanced than ours.

We go into the next round of talks with a solution to the Irish Border looking further away than ever. Not helped by the fact that brexit nationalism is restricted to England alone, with many being happy to let NI be sunk into the Irish sea and the favour the rebuilding of Hadrian's wall in order to keep out the foreigners.

It's hard to resist simply sitting down wailing "we doomed". But try to resist and keep saying, you are against this crap. If only so history books don't just say we all agreed to this clusterfuck.

Here have a fluffy bunny to help comfort you.

BBC R4 news announced it as a “rally”. Big focus on the NE this morning, wonder if Brexit effects will get a mention. I’m getting a train to London at 8:30.

DGRossetti · 23/06/2018 07:42

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-44575929

Senior Cabinet ministers have insisted the UK is prepared to walk away from Brexit talks without a deal, on the second anniversary of the vote.

Liam Fox said Theresa May was "not bluffing" over her threat to quit negotiations, while Boris Johnson called for a "full British Brexit"

(contd)

Who followed Nero ?

54321go · 23/06/2018 07:47

The rally gets a slot on BBC website.
Another quick question for a Saturday morning:
Who would you trust and listen to.
A: The management of companies with turnovers in Billions that have been making (whatever) and selling them for 30 years or longer, who will know the cost of every nut and bolt, or,
B: A politician who knows next to nothing about the details of the subject who is supposed to represent and stand up for the companies/public but when 'whipped' by the Government tows the party line?
You can understand companies keeping their real intentions secret as any competitive company would. I would guess that as Airbus/JLR/BMW get their message through there could be a tsunami of other companies eventually revealing their plans to leave.

54321go · 23/06/2018 07:50

It's all very well the government walking away, they will all get a pension even if they simply don't turn up tomorrow. What is the alternative plan that will 'spring into action' on the morning of 30th March?

Peregrina · 23/06/2018 07:53

one major problem that the advertised job for aviation chief (max 70k !) must handle.

Isn't that salary itself a joke - suitable for a middle manager. If you think about it a Local authority Director of Education is probably paid £150,000 for managing a couple of hundred schools, (or if you are an Academy CEO £350,000 for looking after a dozen schools), but someone who has the responsibity ultimately to see that hundreds of planes can fly and thousands of staff keep employed, is offered the salary that a manager of about 50 people might expect.

54321go · 23/06/2018 07:57

Perhaps it is for a 2 month contract. I would expect the stress will kill you trying to 'deal' with the Gov who it appears have no idea what is going to happen.
Unless new deals are done planes can't fly. Not re certified and not insured.

ttprw · 23/06/2018 08:17

We were planning a big trip next year.

So that's not happening now. Can't book even if we wanted to.

We will have taken 2 trips within the EU by the end of the summer....We might try and fit another one in before March.

How did we come to this....How??

Wishing I was marching today with you all...I wonder of it will get any news coverage!?

Peregrina · 23/06/2018 08:29

Off to the demo now, people. Back tomorrow night, God willing.

frankiestein401 · 23/06/2018 08:43

r4 today this morning - on the need for brexit optimism - "we need to be more ambitious, we build wings - we should build the whole aircraft", mind blowing ignorance of the industry - the lead time on a new aircraft is at least a decade and we just dont have investors who will take a decade of nil return against the risk of a design not matching a market predicted 10-15 years previously.

apart from the hs125 business jet, which was sold to bombardier, the last complete civil aircraft we made in this country was the 146 - a virtually hand made maintenance headache.

fokker, in the 100 et al, had one of the most efficient design and build capabilities in the world - but they couldnt get the investment needed to survive.

Have a good trip Peregrina and all.

This is Liam Fox explaining how Britain has a strong hand in negotiations with the EU.

{He added that Britain is at an advantage in world trade because English is "the best language in the world for doing commerce, science and medicine and so on".}

Totally missing the point that OK English may be the 'best' language for trade and commerce, there is NOTHING to say that Britain has anything to do with it at all!
If that is the kind of rational thinking that the Gov is using, in the words of Dad's Army 'we're doomed, doomed I tell ye'.

WifeofDarth · 23/06/2018 08:47

We're all popping in to town for the march too. I wonder how big it will be.

Scoopofchaff · 23/06/2018 08:51

Good luck to Peregrina and to all who are marching. Hats off to you!

ttprw · 23/06/2018 08:55

Mother...Im not booking anything post march 2019 yet...

Too many unknowns

I'm concentrating on planning ahead in case of food and meds shortages and price hikes

prettybird · 23/06/2018 09:09

"[....in the event of no deal] .... and the queues at the border we will do whatever we need to do to keep our industry going" said the Trade & Industry Minister (? wasn't clear who it was) on BBC R2 news this morning.

So what will happen to the food imports that we need? Hmm

Cherrypi · 23/06/2018 09:18

Good luck marchers. It was mentioned on the news this morning. I was struck last night by only the remainer general public are following the ins and outs of brexit. Also no one has changed their views.

54321go · 23/06/2018 09:30

Maybe some leavers have realised that the Brexit they want is not what is actually on offer. Effectively they are fighting the wrong battle.
You could argue that losing a couple of hundred thousand jobs when companies ship out is 'worthwhile' but the companies that stay will mainly be lower paid jobs or occupations such as healthcare (nurses and carers) which obviously stays here. Skilled jobs leaving will drastically cut the tax revenue, received both from the employees but business taxes.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 23/06/2018 09:32

Good luck everyone marching today. I'm about to set off.

54321go · 23/06/2018 09:33

I suppose as more people lose their jobs they can look after elderly relatives, that could be a 'plus'.

EU diplomats shocked by Boris's 'four-letter reply' to business concerns about Brexit

That Tory Brexit business plan in full: "Fuck business."

OP posts:
prettybird · 23/06/2018 09:38

That just demonstrates the truth of the statement that the key Brexiteers don't care about "ordinary" people and their livelihoods. Angry

The Brexiteers are safe with their guaranteed pensions and, more importantly their off-shored funds, their millions and their property Angry

He could just as accurately said, "Fuck the plebs" SadAngry

Hasenstein · 23/06/2018 09:43

Off to the march now. Don't hold out much hope for any change in government attitude, but at least I can say I'm still trying!

54321go · 23/06/2018 09:46

That ties in nicely with Liam Fox's assertion that 'because we are special and commerce uses English'. The downside is of course that almost EVERYONE will understand comments made like this. Maybe if he had stuck to Latin he might get away with it?

SusanWalker · 23/06/2018 09:46

Good luck everyone marching today - I will be with you in spirit.

SusanWalker · 23/06/2018 09:48

Liam Fox is too dim to realise that people can speak English with each other without an English person being present.
