After 14 defeats, the Withdrawal Bill exited the Lords. In much worse condition than anyone dared to predicted.

Now we have those who were viciously against Lords reform, all of a sudden shouting about how much we desperately need it. Well fancy that. Tradition isn't so attractive if you aren't getting your own way.

Daniel Hannan has suddenly admitted that Brexit is not 'going to plan' (there was one?) and Johnson is still his weekly resignation threat.

It now throws things back into Corbyn's court. The Tory Rebel Forces think that they have the numbers to stay in the Single Market, but are blocked by Corbyn's opposition to it.

The decision on the customs union has effectively been pushed back to the Autumn by May, but we have to make a decision about the Irish border by June or trade talks won't go ahead as planned.

The trouble is that the Cabinet can not decide on which option they want to take, but neither is particularly viable anyway. Max Fac means a border in the Irish Sea which the DUP won't like and the Customs Partnership isn't acceptable to the Empire Tories. In any case it seems unlikely that either option could get through the Commons in their current form due to the growing number of Tory Rebel Forces.

May also has a problem with the grass roots. It is more or less impossible for her to deliver the Brexit they desire whatever she tries.

The growing backlash about the hostile environment also undermines the point of Brexit in reducing immigration. Its is growing apparent, WHY we need immigration and that the people who are being targeted for deportation are simply the easiest to pick off and not the ones that people see as 'a problem'. Indeed you have to wonder about how many immigrants ARE a problem. The idea to control immigration after Brexit was not through the border but through the hostile environment, yet this seems now to be something that will be impossible to continue with politically.

Leave.EU have now been referred to the police for breaking Electoral Law. It also turns out that they found numerous ways to beat the spending limit legally. The female data controller has also been found to have data protection law. Meanwhile Banks and Wigmore as well as Nix (CA and SCL), Cummings (Vote Leave) and Silvester (AIQ) have all been summoned to appear because the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee. Zuckerberg also does not appear to have completed his answers to the committee as Facebook have had their homework deadline extended to Monday (and has been asked to appear by the 24th May whilst he is in Europe).

Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee Dates
Electoral Commission - Tuesday 15th May
Silvester - Wednesday 16th May
Cummings / Nix - Summoned to appear Tuesday 22nd May
Banks / Wigmore - Tuesday 16th June

Also in parliament in next weeks is and interesting looking ten minute rule bill named 'Representation of the People (Gibraltar)' - Tuesday 15th May

Anyway, we are all set for the predictable 'who blinks first' brinkmanship with the UK aware that if the EU don't blink we go over the cliff and parliament aware that if May delays long enough she bypasses parliamentary democracy or put it in a position with a gun to its head.

Who is looking forward to this year's 'row of the summer'?
It could be a long, hot summer.

Anyway, I want France to win Eurovision and the UK to get some points and not come last. Its not going to happen is it?

Is it possible Theresa May does not understand that Ireland is part of the EU?

I think it is entirely feasible that Theresa May does not understand that her arse is, in fact, not her elbow... so Ireland is a bit of a stretch for her, poor love.

frumpety · 14/05/2018 06:10

Just a quick question , what sort of FOM criteria for those wishing to live and work there, does Ireland have ?

frumpety · 14/05/2018 06:42

Have googled it , now off to compare it with ours .

Chris Davies @ chrisdavies49
That’s a really interesting observation from @LOS_Fisher One to bear in mind for Labour internal elections

Clicks drive news and dehumanising language on the left as well as the right.

Who would have thought and prattled on about?

I wonder who really started that SM hashtag last night which made fun of the appearance of working class right wing white men? Smells funny.

Victims of serious crime face arrest

More than half of UK police forces are handing over victims of crime to the Home Office for immigration enforcement, new figures show.

One woman who was beaten by her partner was then herself arrested by police.

There are fears the approach is stopping vulnerable people - including rape victims - reporting crimes, playing into the hands of traffickers.

The 'Gammon' stuff has been growing for a while. I must add that I follow a couple of anti-fascists i'd generally regard as hard left in nature have called gammon a racist and elitist term.

The other interesting thing is one has got very fed up with what Labour have been saying lately. And after being hugely pro Corbyn have started to back away. They were anti-establishment and refused to vote but got completely onboard with Corbyn.

There is a growing disillusionment from even people who I would put in Labour's political sweet spot.

It'll be interesting to see what and how it develops.

But yes, the growth of gammon and where it is coming from is an interesting question.

The gammon (""Wall of gammon") thing started a nearly a year ago after a particularly shouty BBCQT - I didn't see it. And it's stuck. It's about white Kipper types, nothing to do with class.

I'm more puzzled that someone in politics (DUP's Emma Little-Pengelly - I'd never heard of her but she has enormous influence over our nation's future) has only just heard of it/spotted it on Twitter.

I assume gammon is synonymous with ham faced and spam faced. It has been where I've seen it used at least. In which case its certainly not a class thing. It gets flung at a lot of the posh lot like Johnson, jrm and Cameron especially

SwedishEdith · 14/05/2018 09:24

Just checked again:

"Was from a pre-election Question Time. Angry old blokes banging on about whether Corbyn would push the nuclear button, iirc" and "They where the audience on question time that attacked JC for not wanting to start a nuclear war ".

Someone created a collage of them and it got retweeted every time there was a discussion/comments etc from a "political correctness gorn mad" person.

Another top @CitySamuel column. Tho Brexiteer thrashings at the moment cd suggest they are indeed aware how weak.

Brexiteers believe they are in control. But their position is far weaker than they think

Theresa May is preparing to capitulate, and there is little Boris can do about it

See… saw… see… saw… the advantage has swung back towards the Brexiteers – or so they think. The Prime Minister has yet again reiterated her pledges to take back control of Britain’s money, borders and laws.

Wasn't McVey ironic on QT? She was talking about business leaving the country as 'project fear'. Shortly after the chap on the same panel, who had the E car business, said he had a 24 hour plan to leave the country if needs be.

Akala had a very good point about the talk of sovereignty and membership of NATO. US bases on UK soil. Nato requires a much larger pooling of sovereignty and nobody is up in arms. The UK would go to war for another NATO country. Even if it has nothing to do with the UK. Is there a big cry to leave NATO and other orgs?

People talking about the UK joining EFTA are a bit presumptuous. Has anyone asked the EFTA countries if they would allow the UK to parachute in? Norway has said that being in EFTA is the nearest they are to being a superpower. They are the big guys among Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland.

DGRossetti · 14/05/2018 10:47

Pretty certain Norway has intimated that they would be very unhappy for the UK to be given access.

So now, we need to bear in mind that any organisation the UK approaches to join will have seen what we did when we were a member of the EU. Who on earth wants such a troublesome member (unless they come bearing great wedges of cash Hmm Hmm Hmm )

If the UK does manage to become free of the EU, I suspect our troubles will only have started, as we roam the globe like a shit Flying Dutchman (oh, the irony) desperately looking to join a club - any club.

Looks like the Royal family might have their work cut out, producing enough prince[esses] to marry off around the world.

Why on earth is it Jeremy Hunt telling Boris Johnson that he needs to stop shooting his mouth off? Theresa May is such a joke!

According to the Daily Express, Norway are 'urging' us to join the EEA after brexit... bit of a different spin to the FT headline!

Cailleach1 · 14/05/2018 11:24

EEA membership by UK not give such an impact on Norway's big honcho status as EFTA. It must be advocated to retain/allow Single Market membership.

And TM 'moved' Nicky Morgan for saying she never bought anything with the price tag of TM's leather trous. She didn't even need to go as far as to say what May was advocating was 'crazy'.
