Yet it is a great mistake to suppose that the only writers who matter are those whom the educated in their saner moments can take seriously. There exists a subterranean world where pathological fantasies disguised as ideas are churned out by crooks and half-educated fanatics for the benefit of the ignorant and the superstitious. There are times when this underworld emerges from the depths and suddenly fascinates, capturers and dominates multitudes of usually sane and responsible people, who thereupon take leave of sanity and responsibility. And it occasionally happens that this underworld becomes a political power and changes the course of history.
Norm Cohn ‘Warrant for Genocide’ 1970

(As referenced by Nick Cohen).

We have a deal (or bits of a deal). Bino til Dec 2020. Then the cliff?

Still a long way to go. It sounds better than it could be. But worse than it initially seems.

I heard Tom Brake (LibDem, referenced upthread) speak recently.
Articulate, realistic, sensible, knowledgeable. Says he still thinks Brexit can be reversed if the electorate comes to realise what a very bad move it is and if the Government finally acknowledges that it can't be done without massive damage to our economy. I think the electorate is coming to its senses (slowly) but the Government is still, unfortunately, delusional.

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2018 11:02

I think hes on the right track but some of what he says is flawed and he isnt always thorough. He can say some tenuous stuff that I raise my eyebrows at.

He has got 'something' but he needs to take a step back sometimes as it weakens his case.

I understand why. Especially since its a moving story. (I know im guilty of the same things to a degree on Westminstenders) There is so much out there, its easy to see baddies everywhere.

The difference is that if he wants to be professional about it, he needs a filter though and to be able to focus on the strong points. Otherwise its on the boundary of opinion/journalism rather than pure investigative journalism.

He has a place in a developing story though, as others are picking up on the good bits of what he says.

But yeah, just needs a pinch of salt and a critical approach rather than taking purely at face value.

I think that's a fair assessment, or at least, chimes with my thoughts too (though you have detailed it far more cohesively and lucidly than I could!).

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2018 11:35

Alex Wickham @ wikiguido
"Social media is a great way of communicating because our message doesn't have to be moderated" says Jeremy Corbyn. Certainly not much moderation going on in his Facebook groups.

So much in this tweet makes me cringe.

Tom Cheshire @ chesh
Hello! @ICOnews will now not get a warrant until Friday at least
“A High Court judge has adjourned the ICO’s application for a warrant relating to Cambridge Analytica until Friday. The ICO will be in court to continue to pursue the warrant to obtain access to data and information to take forward our investigation.” - spokesperson
ICO says it's a 'process issue', specifically Schedule 9 of Data Protection Act
www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/29/schedule/9
ICO issued a demand for access to 'records and data in the hands of Cambridge Analytica' on March 7, well before story broke. (Whistleblower had been working with them before Observer publication.)

Tim Turner @ tim2040
Still doesn’t explain why Denham announced her intention to seek warrant on the telly - possible to apply for warrant without telling CA

Evan Better @ lordecovfefe
It was in the letter asking for access, as require by law. CA are well aware of the DPA and related legislation.

Tim Turner @ tim2040
You’re saying that CA knew she definitely intended to apply for the warrant and when she intended to do that?

Just seen this about Labour's ongoing antisemitism problem

#LabourAntisemitism
‏*@GnasherJew*
As we predicted, it’s happened @UKLabour has knowingly selected an antisemite & holocaust denier as a council candidate. There is no denying it now it is institutionally a racist party. #LabourAntisemitism

www.nytimes.com/2018/03/21/technology/facebook-zuckerberg-data-privacy.html

Facebook representatives confirmed that Cambridge Analytica representatives met with Facebook on Tuesday to discuss lifting the ban. Mr. Zuckerberg told The Times he did not rule out allowing Cambridge Analytica back, saying Facebook must first conduct a “full forensic audit of the firm” and “have full confirmation that there’s no wrongdoing here.”

Shami Chakrabarti is on Question Time tonight. Wonder if it will be asked about.

I think hes on the right track but some of what he says is flawed and he isnt always thorough.

Just because of the way the thread flows I thought I'd highlight that Red's post clearly relates to JJ Patrick not Tom Brake!

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2018 12:01

Haha. I meant JJ Patrick.

But equally I would apply the same to Tom Brake. He tends to over egg things. But then I expect that as he's a politician and that's not what a good investigative journalist would do.

John Brown
@JohnB3003
We all need to be asking why the Information Commissioner has still not been granted a warrant to search CA offices and computers. This is starting to smell very bad #cambridgeanalytica

Charles Tannock
@CharlesTannock
Very good question and it may well be embarrassing & very revealing to see where the funding comes from. By the time a warrant is issued wonder what records will still be there to inspect?

Tannock’s an MEP but is still a conservative one, though he’s been a dissenting voice on Brexit and I think is considered a rebel

How Exeter University is linked to the Cambridge Analytica scandal

Cambridge Analytica's managing director Mark Turnbull is named as an honorary fellow of one of the university's top research centres

Turning back to passports for one second. The value of a British passport has gone down since this debacle anyway.

However if there's one nation guaranteed not nick any British passports once we become a third nation, it's the French!

lonelyplanetmum · 22/03/2018 13:05

Also I haven't researched it yet but I think the ICO have different types of warrant.

For this type , it's an on notice type of thing. So they request records and data first, then if there's no response by the deadline a warrant is sought. That's quite normal even with injunction type things.

You normally only get surprise ex parte legal remedies where there's evidence something is about to be destroyed as evidence.

I don't know but maybe deletion isn't an issue, as access to systems maybe enables recovery or discovery of any deletions?

I'm not even going to try and guess what's happening.

Mark Zuckerberg is 'sure' that Russia is using Facebook to meddle in the US mid-term elections

BREAKING: Cambridge Analytica HQ evacuated amid reports of suspicious package

the truth ?

lonelyplanetmum · 22/03/2018 14:33

Whilst we wait for news of the package,as a humorous aside.

Ha ha ha Neil Hamilton (remember him) has complained about the Beeb's anti Brexit bias!

Some interview with sensible pro EU 9 year olds apparently. Although they had childish views...

www.thepoke.co.uk/2018/03/20/ukips-neil-hamilton-complained-anti-brexit-9-year-olds-bbc-everyones-making-joke/

DGRossetti · 22/03/2018 14:34

Meanwhile we've just had an a2 (folded to A3) puff piece from the (tory) West Midlands Mayor

Can anyone guess how many times Brexit is mentioned ?

I will be in contact with him anyway, as I want to know (a) who paid for it, and (b) what steps they took to make it available to the blind.

prettybird · 22/03/2018 14:38

I was just coming on to post that very link Lonelyplanetmum Grin

On the Facebook post where I saw it, lots of lovely comments about the childish intellect not understanding the issues ..... and they weren't talking about the interviewees! Wink

MyLittleVespa · 22/03/2018 14:46

Ha! What also gave me pleasure today was seeing the Lib Dem local election ad targeting EU nationals in the UK embedded within a DM article. Especially this screen grab..
