Yay for the blue passports.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all

May next year bring us £350 million for the NHS, cake, unicorns, financial passporting, access to the single market, Irish love and of course control to the people.

(Apologies been up to my eyeballs. Normal service will resume after Christmas).

DD1 suggested we should have complete freedom of choice over passport colour, since the EU doesn't actually dictate the colour and has told me she wants one in pink and green leopard print.

And thanks for the new thread, RTB.

howabout · 22/12/2017 16:58

Woman you peaked my curiosity. Apparently England's ye olde passe port started off written in Latin and English.

www.wanderlust.co.uk/content/a-short-history-of-passports

Still not convinced by Macron's assertion that French is about to enjoy a renaissance as the language of commerce.

Hasenstein · 22/12/2017 17:08

RTB

Proposed award thirded, fourthed and fifthed! These threads have become essential to my sanity and general survival, so thanks for making this such a source of comfort and (however faint still) hope.

woman11017 · 22/12/2017 17:13

Sorry to be pedantic howabout but it's 'piqued' French/Norman again.

passport
late 15th century (denoting authorization to depart from a port): from French passeport, from passer ‘to pass’ + port ‘seaport’.

It's easy to look for the etymological roots of this immigrant language:
Science: greek
Law and church: norman
Administrative: latin
Geordie: Viking Smile
Anglo Saxon: sweary.

The French have long fought US cultural imperialism through maintaining the quality of their language and culture.

Hence their cinema and literature.

Hence ours.

Hence brexit.

LineyRunner · 22/12/2017 17:58

Of course the concept of 'Greek' is frequently misunderstood in terms of historical appropriations.

woman11017 · 22/12/2017 18:13

'Greek' is not a concept.

lalalonglegs · 22/12/2017 18:34

Thanks Red for the new thread (and an extremely overdue to "Hear, hear" to thecatfromjapan's post on grooming).

Legal action to see whether UK could unilaterally stop Brexit gets go-ahead

Holliewantstobehot · 22/12/2017 19:06

Apparently Cornish tartan only dates from the 1960s.

Thanks for the new thread red. Hope you feel better soon.

lalalonglegs · 22/12/2017 19:07

It's great that a ruling is finally being pursued and by a cross-party selection of MPs. Well done, Scottish representatives Star.

HesterThrale · 22/12/2017 19:07

There's also a legal challenge to the legality of Article 50, filed today.

Brexit: Government facing High Court challenge to cancel Article 50. If judicial review is successful, legal mechanism could be nullified and negotiations halted.

All Greek to me woman. Fungibility of language covers a multitude of sins. Xmas Grin

woman11017 · 22/12/2017 19:43

Fungibility I just learnt a new word cheers howabout Smile
Hester @50 challenge is in express too now.

annandale · 22/12/2017 19:45

To capture the true meaning of modern Britain, shurely either Burberry check or Orange. With a sash.

Mistigri · 22/12/2017 19:52

Your government are a utter embarrassment. This blue passport bollocks is the final straw for me - nothing to do with me, I don't get a vote, it's not my country any more.

It's a real lowest common denominator moment. This is explicitly designed to appeal to stupid, old, racist people and the people who write newspapers for them.

pointythings · 22/12/2017 19:52

You can't have orange passports. That's Holland's national colour and as soon as Geert Wilders gets his act together, takes over, gets Holland to Hexit (Nexit?) we will be having orange passports. So hands off, you lot. Xmas Grin

MongerTruffle · 22/12/2017 20:36

pointythings It's Nexit, because Holland isn't a country (it's a region of The Netherlands).

pointythings · 22/12/2017 20:40

I do know that, Monger. Given that I am Dutch myself. But Holland is kind of shorthand for The Netherlands, because it's an unwieldy mouthful. When people ask me where I am from, I tend to say 'Holland' - and not just because I was born in the province of Zuid-Holland.

But let's face it, Nexit and Hexit sound equally crap.

frumpety · 22/12/2017 20:49

If we really must opt for blue , can I suggest a nice F&B shade , like stiffkey in estate emulsion Smile

TheElementsSong · 22/12/2017 21:17

Thanks for the new thread RTB

BigChocFrenzy · 22/12/2017 21:40

(a theme from prev thread) British Military Procurement Lies, Incompetence, Corruption and Corporate Manslaughter

http://thequietmancunian.com/afghanistan/procurement-corruption.html

Angry ex-squaddies reveal that the Foxhound army patrol vehicle , which was specifically designed for British Army service in Iraq and other ME countries ...
has an engine that doesn't work in hot weather !

Like the systems on the Navy Type 45 frigates that don't work in hot weather

Who designs & builds such useless crap ?

Why do UK govt keeping buying (expensive) military kit that won't work in the main countries where the UK has been waging war ?

HermioneAndTheSniffle · 22/12/2017 21:42

Place mat

prettybird · 22/12/2017 22:06

Mistigris : I was talking to dh about both Catfromjapan's "grooming" post and the whole "Blue passport" irrelevance plans and he was trying to articulate what is happening with British English politics: it is no longer even the "cult of mediocrity" which dh used to complain about It's gone well beyond that: not even the "lowest common denominator", because it's not even "common". It's a attempted dragging down of societal "norms" to the basest of instincts Sad

AgnesSkinner · 22/12/2017 22:24

I knew this would come in handy.

Westminstenders: Blue Passports
woman11017 · 22/12/2017 22:26

The Scum campaigned for these things, it's polling very badly and they're not putting it on their front page. Everyone understands this one, and it is not going down well.
Naturally they fibbed about EU and passports.
