Westministenders: Rebel Rebel Your Brexit is a Mess.

Hot Tramp, I love you so!

The European Parliament have agreed to progress talks to the next stage. Despite Brexiteers saying its not legally binding, it is apparent that the EU certainly disagree.

Not only that, but the wording of the deal goes further. It binds us to not being able to agree and new trade deals for 2 years.

The All Important Amendment 7 to the Great Repel Bill has been successful. May’s power grab has a set back.

By just FOUR votes the government was defeated. How May will be regretting that pointless election tonight.

Parliament will have a meaningful vote on the exit terms.

But don’t be too excited. Brussels might not like this as May can not guarantee the UK will agree to a deal. It means the the EU are negotiating with parliament NOT May now.

There is also the suggestion that the mood of parliament is changing and is beginning to lean more towards a EFTA / EEA type deal.

But equally this could also send us to the brink with a deal from the EU that could be rejected by parliament.

The stakes just got higher.

Death threats should have no part in the political process of a democracy.

Sad

It shouldn't need saying.

Poor man. And I'm glad he's spoken out.

thecatfromjapan · 14/12/2017 17:33

Small though the action was, I'm glad I wrote to Waitrose now.

I can't believe we're being asked to tolerate this. Sad

Butterymuffin · 14/12/2017 17:44

I hope the police will be vigorously working to track down, identify and charge those making death threats to MPs. It's unacceptable to say the least, and after Jo Cox's murder such threats shouldn't be minimised.

LurkingHusband · 14/12/2017 18:21

I hope the police will be vigorously working to track down, identify and charge those making death threats to MPs

They could start by pretending they're looking for whistleblowers. Seems they move heaven and earth then.

I wonder whether Dominic Grieve were an airport he might get more attention ?

iboughtsnowboots · 14/12/2017 18:28

I sent a quick supportive email to Dominic Grieve and Stephen Hammond. I had a nice reply from Stephen Hammond's office manager. I am struggling to believe that I feel I have to write encouraging emails to conservative MP's because the daily mail is branding them traitors for wanting MP's to be able to vote on issues. I feel I have fallen down a rabbit hole on so many levels.

ACertainRatio · 14/12/2017 19:28

eeeowww Grin I like the idea of Theresa presiding over her party in the manner of Steve Coogan's pool attendant: 'STEPHANIE! STEPHANIEEEEE!!! free swim...'

HesterThrale · 14/12/2017 19:35

Austrian leader hopes Brexit can be reversed after Commons setback. Christian Kern responds to Theresa May’s defeat by saying he hopes UK could change its mind as issues will be difficult to solve.

He's optimistic - I don't think we're quite there! But he's right - issues will be difficult to solve.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/dec/14/austrian-leader-christian-kern-hopes-brexit-reversed-after-commons-setback?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

Icantreachthepretzels · 14/12/2017 20:53

How wonderful that Christian Kern still seems to want us back. I honestly don't understand how the brexiteers can continue to spin the nasty EU rhetoric in the face of such patience, grace and goodwill on their part.

I mean, I know I know 'They don't respect the will of the people and they're sabotaging our chances because they need us more than we need them.' But anyone spinning that line needs to really listen to themselves and ponder how exactly it was they turned into such a mean spirited, angry, little knobwobbler.

Icantreachthepretzels · 14/12/2017 21:00

Reading the article, I rather think that the Dutch Prime minister, Rutte, is over optimistic or over generous when it comes to Theresa May's competence or strategic ability. I can only assume he fancies her. Either that or he's being really really sarcastic.

HesterThrale · 14/12/2017 21:06

I agree Icantreach.
And EU politicians' knowledge of the UK situation is extraordinary. This MEP from Luxembourg completely nails the whole situation in a one minute speech. The 'British people have fallen victim to political crooks and the result is a divided and weakened UK.'
I guess they feel sorry for us.

Reason 12 why I don't recognise this country:

Brendan Cox‏*@MrBrendanCox*
My son has been elected to the school council and is visiting the House of Commons in January. I’m finding it hard to deal with Jo not being there to welcome them. She would have loved it.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/12/2017 22:27

That;s so sad, woman
Jo misses and will continue to miss such lovely achievements and milestones of her children Sad
Brendan must keep thinking so often how unfair that she is not there to share these joys with them all. Big occasions must be bittersweet on his own

Meanwhile the Heil and others keep spewing hate about traitors and endangering more MPs Angry

woman11017 · 14/12/2017 22:38

Yes. bigchoc.

HesterThrale · 14/12/2017 22:47

So Liam Fox jetted off on Monday to the WTO ministerial conference, probably full of hope that he could lay the foundations for some future trade deals or alliances.

mobile.twitter.com/tradegovuk/status/940204533875015686

Sadly, it didn't go well. In fact ended in discord.

the World Trade Organization ministerial conference in Buenos Aires ended in deadlock.

mollymep.org.uk/2017/12/14/brexiteers-wto-plans-in-tatters/

The World Trade Organization failed to reach any new agreements on Wednesday, ending a three-day ministerial conference in discord in the face of stinging U.S. criticism of the group and vetoes from other countries. The stalemate dashed hopes for new deals on e-commerce and curbs to farm and fisheries subsidies and raised questions about the body’s ability to govern increasingly disputed global trade. The frustrations led some ministers, including U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, to suggest that negotiations among smaller groups of “like-minded” WTO countries were a better approach going forward. “We have not achieved any multilateral outcomes,” European Union Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom told a news conference. “The sad reality is that we did not even agree to stop subsidizing illegal fishing.” She said the meeting laid bare one of the WTO’s biggest deficiencies - that all agreements must have the unanimous consent of all 164 member countries. She said the United States was partly to blame but that other countries also blocked progress.

Somehow I think new trade deals will be torturously difficult, and the US is not going to smoothe our path.

twofingerstoEverything · 14/12/2017 22:56

Ugh. Question Time is like a bearpit. Dimbleby is like a political Jeremy Kyle now. Nicky Morgan is facing so much aggression. She looks close to tears. This is really highlighting how divided the country is.

OlennasWimple · 14/12/2017 23:09

Bravo Stephen Hammond - at least there are a couple of MPs with backbone

OlennasWimple · 14/12/2017 23:13

Something New is an interesting idea, but only ever had small numbers of voters in Godalming

Godalming is a tight Blue / Yellow place not much in it in past elections

Holliewantstobehot · 15/12/2017 00:26

Just watched QT. Isabel Oakshott was very aggressive to Nicky Morgan. She seems like a piece of work. If I hear the phrase will of the people one more time I shall be sick.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 15/12/2017 03:33

This might force the uk government into stopping their pretence of ignoring that there’s a problem and acting as if everything about Brexit was legit. How they’ve managed to get away with resisting any attempt to acknowledge there’s a problem, let alone do anything about it, has always baffled me

Wow. WSJ confirms Mueller has demanded evidence from Cambridge Analytica. This is a very big deal. Not least for Britain.

Recap: Electoral Commission is investigating impermissible donation from Cambridge Analytica to @NigelFarage & @Arronbanks’ Leave.EU campaign 2/

That’s @nigel_farage the v good friend of Steve Bannon, director & shareholder at Cambridge Analytica at the time of ref. On day, Article 50 triggered. ‘Well done Bannon. Well done Breitbart. You helped with this hugely.’

Just placematting here///

mathanxiety · 15/12/2017 04:53

Oh dear, WF

What a pity you failed to mention how Theresa May got her leash jerked by Arlene Foster, in your screed back there. Why bother with Parliament at all when you have someone on the far fringes of political opinion and the far fringes of the UK too, who knows what she wants and is determined to get it?

Why not just cut out the middle man altogether, send Theresa May and the rest of the MPs packing, and let Arlene do her worst, and to heck with centuries of Parliamentary democracy.

mathanxiety · 15/12/2017 05:22

Why else is law important?

"It's all we got", as Piggy says in The Lord of the Flies as might replaces right.

I was a bit taken aback when Dimbleby said at the start that they were putting a rebel in front of an audience of skeptics. That sounds pretty impartial to me.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 15/12/2017 07:43

Re: lawyers in the amendment 7 ayes contingent

Most of the Brexit rebels are lawyers. Maybe experts are useful after all
