Westministenders: A week in politics is a long time....

Lost track of politics in the last week or so?

Someone asked how do I keep on top of this? I’ve struggled this week there is so much going on.

Brexit seems to be on a bit of a back burner and we have become utterly swamped in mud and sleaze and corruption allegations

So here is a summary of the last week:

  1. Government defeated over the impact reports due to an ancient parliamentary protocol. They must release papers to the public though this is likely to be heavily redacted.
  2. Currently we are holding talks about talks with the EU. Instead of speeding up talks. They are annoyed at us for this.
  3. Baroness Anelay, the minister responsible for getting the Repel Bill through the Lords, quit citing an injury caused by jumping out of a helicopter several years ago. She was the second person to quit this role. Lord Bridges quit saying it was impossible task.
  4. Michael Gove has joined the Brexit Cabinet, which now has a majority of Leavers.
  5. There is currently no one employed at the Brexit department for strategic planning.
  6. Brexit Bill likely to face even more opposition in the face of Williamson’s self promotion. More Remainers who have been loyal to May talking of joining the Rebel Forces.
  7. The has been a threat to rig the Lords to pass the Repel Bill according to Lord Adonis
  8. Clegg, Adonis and Clarke went to see Barnier. Farage got jealous.
  9. Talks for Stormont broke down. No direct rule but not home rule. Who is ruling is a mystery, but the same can be said in England at present. DUP are not getting their dosh.
  10. FTA may not be possible on lines UK want as it would be better than Canada and South Korea and that’s not legally allowed. The real problem for the UK is services.
  11. EHCR related issues – prisoner voting rights and letter to Romanian which brings into question whether the EHCR is deliberately being flouted.
  12. Clause in the data protection bill which allows it to be ignored ‘cos immigration’.
  13. The Electoral Commission are being sued for allowing over spending by Vote Leave
  14. Arron Banks is being investigated by the Electoral Commission over how he donated to political causes
  15. UKIP whistleblowers reported donations they thought were odd and not declared but only just has come to light
  16. Arron Banks is winding up a charity under investigation by the Charities Commission
  17. Arron Banks paid for Kate Hoey to go to Washington DC.
  18. Lord Ashcroft apparently exposed by the Bermuda hack, like Robert Mercer
  19. Steve Baker reported for taking money from the mysterious donor to the DUP
  20. Priti Patel breaks ministerial code with an undisclosed trip to Israel with lobbyist. May says she has done nothing wrong, despite it being clear breech of the rules.
  21. Michael Fallon quit over multiple incidents
  22. Damien Green embroiled in accusation over Kate Maltby. Also having a fight with former counter terrorism copper who he has history with over ‘extreme porn’ found on his computer during a raid. Copper previously said he had been set up in the paper but dropped the accusation. Green is denying everything
  23. Charlie Elphicke has had the whip removed and case has been referred to police. Says he has done nothing wrong and isn’t even aware of what he has been accused of.
  24. Steven Crabb under investigation for sexting. Has apologised.
  25. Michael Garnier under investigation for dildo buying. Has apologised
  26. Daniel Kawcyznski allegedly tried to set up dates with aides and wealthy friends
  27. Dan Poulter reported by fellow tory MP Andrew Bridgen for allegedly putting hands up skirts. Whips told in 2010.
  28. Chris Pincher alleged pound shop Weinstein who attempted to untuck the shirt of former Olympic rower and tory activist Alex Story.
  29. Gavin Barwell former whip and May’s special adviser. Broke special advisor code by tweeting politically controversial things. Is accused of being complicit in hiding the bodies and not taking action.
  30. Gavin Williamson gave himself a promotion and pissed everyone off. As former whip knows all the dirt but is vulnerable as a result of that, as he didn’t report or discipline offenders.
  31. ‘The Lift Lunger’ – as yet unnamed Tory MP said to have ‘attacked’ Labour MP in taxi. Date rape drugs possibly involved.
  32. Boris Johnson, Alok Sharma and Tobias Ellwood all named as having contact with the mysterious Maltese professor named in the Papadopoulos indictment.
  33. Farage makes anti-Semitic remarks on LBC. That’s Farage, a person of interest to the FBI.
  34. Three indictments in USA for Trump Russia. Which implicate a whole load of people by association.
  35. Some stuff is going on in Saudi Arabia which should have half an eye kept on it.
  36. Jared O’Mara, Clive Lewis, Ivan Lewis and Kelvin Hopkins on the Labour Shit List. Also a rape allegation against a Labour activist which was shut down by a senior Labour figure

This week the Repel Bill and the Budget. Plus no doubt, lots more scandal.

The way they're burning through them though it's not going to be long before they beg Hoey to cross the floor.

Oh, I'm sure there are plenty of nonentities they could promote. Even if those were promotions beyond the abilities of the nonentities in question, that would hardly be a novelty.

I am struck by the timing of the report on Iranian state TV yesterday. The way it's worked out is that Boris Johnson was counting on the Priti Patel furore having removed his blunder from the news, and that the story would be a little "cold" for the media with its short attention span to return to. However, with that report, the Iranian have managed to turn it into a hot story again post-Priti Patel.

Either it's a handy coincidence or a clever move by the Iranians. If it's the latter, then I assume that by embarrassing Johnson sufficiently, and causing more cracks to occur in our shaky government, they're hoping to get more from us in a release deal.

"Michael Gove is to be congratulated for listening to the experts on this issue and backing tougher restrictions,” said Friends of the Earth’s chief executive Craig Bennett

Obviously the time for being fed up of experts is over - hoorah!

In last few mins, @CharlieElphicke's slammed Tories' handling of his case, and said he's innocent of any wrongdoing - he still doesn't know what he's been accused of
Also today we've been talking to Gordon Brown - most interestingly he predicts Brexit talks will reach 'crisis point' + suggests there's possibility UK may not leave EU - watch our interview later on #newsnight
Brown also suggests 'Scotland is not stable' and warns against tension btw UK and rest of Scotland tipping into a situation like Catalonia and rest of Spain

The print is too small on the JC chronicle to read, but I would love to know why they think it will set us back 25 years.

www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/fallout-from-priti-patel-scandal-will-set-us-back-20-years-1.447752

Essentially they are saying it will lead people to be suspicious of Britush Jews.

Interestingly I don't equate British Jews with the Israelis.

woman11017 · 09/11/2017 19:21

The article, Pergrina and Smile MrsR so hope she gets back soon.

The implications of the political scandal which cost Priti Patel her ministerial career will have a devastating impact on British Jewry, senior figures have predicted.

Communal representatives and pro-Israel activists believe the affair will bolster antisemitic conspiracy theories and damage relationships with British politicians for a generation.

One senior communal figure said: “This will set us back 20 years.”

Ms Patel resigned on Wednesday night. Earlier that day, the JC reported a version of events directly at odds with the official line put forward by Downing Street. According to the JC’s sources, Theresa May knew about Ms Patel’s meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu well before last week — and Number 10 asked Ms Patel to leave out details of a meeting with an Israeli official from a statement issued on Monday.

But the involvement of Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI) and its honorary president, Lord Polak, in the affair has led to worries that Israel and the Jewish community could be blamed for future ministerial failings, political scandals and government errors.

One Jewish MP said: “This will feed into the conspiracy theories. It needn’t damage UK-Israel relations, but it will make many people more wary.

I really don’t know whether CFI and Lord Polak will be badly affected by it, but it’s obviously undermining. It’s certainly not good news for the Jewish and pro-Israel communities.

In reality it’s about a minister not following the ministerial code — it wasn’t against the national interest, but it’s very serious

CFI is the largest such group in Westminster with an open line to almost every Tory MP, dozens of other countries’ diplomatic and political groups, and influence in Downing Street for decades.

But one senior communal figure said CFI would now be regarded as “toxic”.

One Jewish Westminster source played down the Israel aspect, saying: “This isn’t about an ‘Israel lobby’, it’s about people not running meetings by the book. But it is a bit of a feeding frenzy for people with an agenda

Another warned that CFI would be helped by “a bit of circumspection and humility” and by “being a bit more careful about perception

A leading pro-Israel Tory MP said it was clear that the fall-out from the Patel affair would undermine CFI’s “reputation and good work”, although another communal source said they expected the group’s reputation to be “damaged” but with a “recovery” possible in the future

A greater concern, they added, was the prospect of the Conservative government’s demise and the potential for Jeremy Corbyn to enter Number 10

The Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council did not comment on this week’s events.

Ms Patel’s resignation on Wednesday evening came after almost a week of claim and counter-claim over who knew what and when about the International Development Secretary’s meetings in Israel during the summer.

When James Landale, the BBC diplomatic correspondent, first reported concerns about Ms Patel’s meetings last Thursday night — the night of the main Balfour centenary dinner — it was said that she had broken away from a family holiday in Israel to conduct the meetings, accompanied by Lord Polak.

The peer told the BBC last week the pair had “met up for one or two things” while being on holiday at the same time. “I just joined her for a couple of days, some drinks, some dinner, that kind of thing,” he said.

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 09/11/2017 19:24

Two sources told the newspaper that she had disclosed the meeting earlier in the week but was told by Number 10 not to include it as it would embarrass the Foreign Office. After the JC published the story on its website, a third source confirmed this version of events.

I agree with this:
Interestingly I don't equate British Jews with the Israelis.

Very different political mindset imho.

OP posts:
Peregrina · 09/11/2017 19:27

I don't equate British Jews with the Israelis either. I do get fed up when if anyone dares to criticise Israeli foreign policy they are immediately called anti-semites. Or you get told, why don't you criticise x, y, z country - when you of course may be equally critical of their foreign policies too.

HashiAsLarry · 09/11/2017 19:46

I think most rational people don't equate most Jews with the Israeli regime. Unfortunately as we've seen recently, rational isn't winning at things.

Around election time I had a chat with my Jewish friends about anti semitism/anti Israel sentiment. Well I didn't just randomly wade in with questions, but there was a general discourse and it came up. They were very much of the opinion that it is possible to be anti the Israeli regime but not anti Semitic, but where there's a conflation of Jews and Israelis, you've got antisemitism on your hands. Seems sensible, but loads of comments reference Jews and are argued as being 'just anti Israel' Hmm

Hmm at the comments I mean.

woman11017 · 09/11/2017 19:49

British Jews are Israelis by right of return, like all Jews. Hoping we don't have to exercise that right, but it's not looking good.

HashiAsLarry · 09/11/2017 20:03

Just re-read what I wrote. Nothing near as eloquent as my friends, and not doing them a service. Basically it boils down to how its worded. Hopefully that came across. Blush

BigChocFrenzy · 09/11/2017 20:42

Quite possibly none of those organising Patel's meetings in Israel, or those with whom she met, realised that she hadn't obtained permission from May or Bojo.
One doesn't normally expect her lack of common sense and respect for her bosses.

All our friends are having to get used to the current govt being totally shambolic, not just one idiot minister, but a whole plague of them.
They keep assuming the same degree of competence as in previous govts

  • although UK govt standards been declining for decades, the competence of current ministers govt has fallen down the cliff

I'm amazed at how clappy happy Brexiters are, with the govt floundering around from one scandal or self-made crisis to the next

I could understand this of Lexiters, many of whom really voted against austerity and a smug, heartless Tory PM

However, many Tory supporting Brexiters, on MN and elsewhere, don't seem to have realised that the Tory govt is mired in an existential crisis for the party, flailing around, tearing its own flesh in panic at the impossible task of satisfying all Leaver promises
