Westminstenders: Boom. The Brexit Backlash starts to hit.

So it turns out that immigration figures that stated students overstayed were wrong. The home office knew this. And sat on it. Since 2015. Under Theresa.

That smells a bit doesn't it?

Imagine it: "Let's do lunch Paul. I'll cover up and give you a nice immigration story for your front page. In return, crown me PM."

Then tonight BOOM. Labour look like they have made a move. Soft very swishy Brexit. Even less brexity than the Beano Brexit that the Tories have been trying to announce on the quiet over the summer whilst Brexiteers are on holiday.

amp.theguardian.com/global/2017/aug/26/labour-calls-for-lengthy-transitional-period-post-brexit
Labour makes dramatic shift on Brexit and single market
Party opens clear divide with Tories, with support for free movement and paying into EU budgets for up to four years

Labour is to announce a dramatic policy shift by backing continued membership of the EU single market beyond March 2019, when Britain leaves the EU, establishing a clear dividing line with the Tories on Brexit for the first time.

In a move that positions it decisively as the party of “soft Brexit”, Labour will support full participation in the single market and customs union during a lengthy “transitional period” that it believes could last between two and four years after the day of departure, it is to announce on Sunday.

This will mean that under a Labour government the UK would continue to abide by the EU’s free movement rules, accept the jurisdiction of the European court of justice on trade and economic issues, and pay into the EU budget for a period of years after Brexit, in the hope of lessening the shock of leaving to the UK economy. In a further move that will delight many pro-EU Labour backers, Jeremy Corbyn’s party will also leave open the option of the UK remaining a member of the customs union and single market for good, beyond the end of the transitional period.

Why would Labour suddenly do this? It's not just because of the youth vote. What about their leave voters?

Faisal Islam on the subject:
2. On Labour Leavers is very very interesting and involves quite the psephological judgement re the election....
...the calculation appears to be that Labour Leave voters had the chance to vote for Theresa May's brand of Brexit, and bar 5 seats, said No
Was that because Lableave voters were already signalled "hard Brexit"? Or many millions such voters much more concerned about other things?

Have Labour been polling their voters on this?

Theresa has also apparently set her sell by date: Friday 30th August 2019.

www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/theresa-sets-date-shell-quit-11061894.amp
Theresa May sets date she'll quit as Prime Minister - giving herself time to see Britain through Brexit

The longer the transition and the squishier it gets, the more the more you wonder.

Mr Barnier will enjoy his coffee and newspapers tomorrow as he prepares for round two of Brexit talks starting next week.

The question on his mind most: Will David Davis remember to bring his notes this time?

My history is all over this forum, and these threads. I've used this username on here for about a year. Try looking.

And another story on torykip Russian links:

Seems to be a little bit of a pattern developing here?

HashiAsLarry.
You could have shared it in less time than it took you to write that. I thought Remainers don't accept coynes when it comes to profession and qualifications. Come on HashisLarry, let's make it easy for everyone reading this thread.

Can you reciprocate Mistigri's request for profession and qualifications?

My experience is that posters who post about brexit is that they are very shy about telling us what their job or educational background is.

Would you be willing to share?

Peregrina · 31/08/2017 07:34

I had to laugh: Theresa May wants to lead the Tory party into the next election. Wants a stronger, global, fairer Britain.

She's not exactly had good form for predicting the future, has she?
Count the days until she is ousted. The only thing keeping her in power is that the possible contenders are equally poor.

It's perfectly laudable to want a stronger, global, fairer Britain. She is doing this, how? Investment in the north and west - no. Global - booting out students illegally, deliberately ignoring evidence about international students returning home? A Home Office telling British Citizens to leave the country? No, not my idea of stronger, global and fairer.

Thatssomecatchthatcatch22 · 31/08/2017 07:36

Same for you Woman12345

Would you be willing to accede to your fellow Remainer's request? I did.

Bearbehind · 31/08/2017 07:37

that, instead of asking completely pointless questions about what people do for a living, could we come back to my question about what controls on FOM can be enforced after Brexit that couldn't have happened without leaving the EU?

woman12345 · 31/08/2017 07:38

'Chavicide' doesn't seem to be doing young torykip voting figures much good either.

Grin Now I know it's the same poster Grin!

woman12345 · 31/08/2017 07:40

Peregrina I think she's still a 'hostage', her demeanour seems to suggest it. I actually feel sorry for her on one hand, and on the other.......

HashiAsLarry · 31/08/2017 07:43

Actually I couldn't, as I'm not a made up person my education, work and personal history don't fit into one sentence.

HashiAsLarry · 31/08/2017 07:44

elements would that be the person being reminisced about a few days ago?

Artisanjam · 31/08/2017 07:48

I was amused by the report that Teresa May will stay 'because she's not a quitter'. Just a loser.

TheElementsSong · 31/08/2017 07:48

Hashi I believe it is the same person. The final piece of the puzzle is the repeated C&P haranguing style of last night/this morning.

Wonder if they disappeared the lat time because they were banned or they just finished their assignment for their employer?

woman12345 · 31/08/2017 07:49

As so much of what's being attacked by trump/brexit is enlightenment thinking. Here is a nice article on it, and the lovely Allan Little has a series tucked away on radio 4. (recorded in enlightenment HQ, prettybirdGrin)

Thanks elements I think I missed the delights, having discovered the ref section on here very late.

Thatssomecatchthatcatch22 · 31/08/2017 07:51

Bearbehind
I have answered your question several times. FOM creates an unsustainable shift of population from richer parts to poorer ones. This creates pressures on resources and wage deflation (the example I gave about the British builder using labourers from Bulgaria and housing them in a transport trailer in his yard). This makes it very difficult for other local builders (employing local labour, with local rent/mortgages to pay) to compete on the same terms.

After Brexit, people from Bulgaria, Romania, Portugal etc (and any other EU) country may (as the details are yet to be fully codified) would eventually have to go through the same immigration process as anyone from a non-EU country wishing to live and work here. The employer would need to evidence that they had taken steps to see if they could have filled that vacancy with local (ie. Existing UK citizen) labour. If they can do this, the potential migrant would get a work visa for a limited time. If they were out of work, they would have to leave the UK.

Now then.Bearbehind, don't be coy like all them Leavers....

Could you please reciprocate Mistigri's request for profession and qualifications?

Thatssomecatchthatcatch22 · 31/08/2017 07:55

Right, well is 11am here in Moscow and they are taking me to my next shift.. 9 hours of hard labour in steel factory.

Bearbehind · 31/08/2017 07:56

And how is any of that different to what we could have done whilst in the EU?

We choose not to impose a brake on immigration.

HashiAsLarry · 31/08/2017 07:57

It's an oldie, but it keeps being relevant.

Westminstenders: Boom. The Brexit Backlash starts to hit.
Peregrina · 31/08/2017 07:57

the example I gave about the British builder using labourers from Bulgaria and housing them in a transport trailer in his yard

I gave anecdotal evidence of such people living in a 'storage shed'. Collusion with the Local Authority (Tory) means that they get away with it, (if it's genuine). The answer is we enforce the law.

I could also repeat what I said about my employment, but why bother? If it wasn't read the first time, how do I know it would be read this time.

TheElementsSong · 31/08/2017 08:00

I could also repeat what I said about my employment, but why bother? If it wasn't read the first time, how do I know it would be read this time.

Exactly, Peregrina - it's just a (very very lame and transparent) tactic to derail discussion when all other avenues have been dealt with, and IMO it's best to just ignore the infantile howls for attention.

woman12345 · 31/08/2017 08:01

Just a general point; I value this thread so much, as I think we all do. Continued thanks to red and all the lovely posters here.

Bigly you're a bit of an inspiration, it's making me want to study economics and politics more. Smile < goes off to search FutureLearn website some more>
