I am no RedToothBrush, so I'm not going to try to emulate her exception OP style.

Here, though, in the interests of carrying on our conversations about WTF is going on with Brexit and the weird political world we find ourselves in right now, is a sort of continuation thread

(Hurry back Red, we need you!)

Mother Do check the terms for your country if desired residence.
5 years appears the common standard, but the terms to qualify may vary between countries.

Really, it would be worth a 1-1 tutor every weekend for a year, just to obtain whatever exam certificate he needs - if indeed he does need any.
Concentrated personal tuition is quite different to not absorbing language, or being lost in a class

The Proms embroiled in Brexit row as concertgoers' EU flags are 'banned

Something tells me the Proms in the Park and the Last Night might result in a backlash to this.

‘Britain is being punished’ Holidaymakers STRANDED as EU imposes 'dangerous' border checks

ROFL.

The Express Say:

Schengen isn't good enough. Blah blah blah. Take back control of our borders. We must Brexit.

Tighten passport control in the EU? Fuck that shit it's dangerous! We are British we should be exempt from passport control.

We want a blue British passport AND priority treatment post Brexit.

We want a blue British passport AND priority treatment post Brexit.

That's simultaneously hilarious and tragic, RTB

RedToothBrush · 01/08/2017 19:26

Its just another example of the total disconnect of leave thinking.

There are no bad things to Brexit. And when there are its just the EU being vindictive even if its in line with what we said we wanted prior to the referendum.

Thanks for the update pretty. I have this sneaking suspicion that the CFBs are indeed the owners. Let's see how it goes.
Sorry for derailing the thread.

Hang on a minute , we have never been part of Schengen have we ? It is the summer holidays , a season of burnt to a crisp brits abroad, frazzled family dynamics, air traffic control and baggage handler strikes , delays and chaos , like Christmas but a bit warmer Grin

DH has been flying to Europe every other week for years and he said that the security check queue's are getting longer and longer , because of heightened security , he does this thing though , where he arrives much earlier , so he doesn't miss his flight , he is one clever bunny DH Smile

Yes, being outside Schengen has always meant that travelers from the UK would be hit by heightened security measures
or probably by staff shortages for any reason, since Schengen doesn't normally require such staff.

However, the non-Schengen EEA queue is likely to be much shorter than the non-EEA queues after a hard Brexit - anyone ahead of you in the queue without a visa, or whose visa is not 100% ok holds up the whole queue until it is sorted.

It's manageable, but travel to anywhere in the EEA (not just EU) may be more like traveling to the US in future
That can also put off some tourists from coming to the UK for short breaks from the continent,
if it is a hassle returning home, even if the UK keeps the same system for EU visitors (which it may not, due to taking back control)

(Times paywall) Cabinet warfare blocking Brexit progress, Theresa May told

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/cabinet-warfare-blocking-brexit-progress-theresa-may-told-b87k2sm78
....
Downing Street tried to pacify warring cabinet ministers yesterday with a fudge
in which it insisted that the principle of EU free movement would end after Brexit but refused to commit itself to a specific replacement.
....
The fudge prompted warnings that the cabinet was not making decisions over Brexit fast enough,
with key British negotiating positions still undecided weeks before talks on a EU-UK trade deal could start.

“Of course decisions are not being taken quick enough,” a senior government figure said.

The warning comes amid concerns that some Brexiteers are not engaging in the difficulties thrown up by Brexit.

One source said that in cabinet meetings and sub-committees Brexiteers sought to paper over the cracks.

“They say it’s all easy.
When there are problems they guffaw
** AngryAngry < so that idiocy is not just for public consumption, but also during govt business meetings >

They pooh-pooh difficulties when Hammond raises them.”

Another said that
Mr Johnson moaned that people were not being “optimistic” about Brexit,
it was more “easy” than colleagues made out and urged everyone to get on with it.

< So he's a fool in private, too Angry >

BigChocFrenzy · 02/08/2017 08:02

(Times paywall) Shoppers should be able to choose whether they buy products that are banned by the EU but not America,
such as chlorine-washed chicken

< somehow, I don't think the better off will be choosing to buy this crap for their families. The poor have the "choice" not to buy > Angry

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/call-to-scrap-food-tariffs-0vxqlzz9l
....
The Policy Exchange, whose former chairman, Michael Gove, is now the environment secretary,
said the government should scrap tariffs.

In a report published today the centre-right think tank implied that shoppers should be free to choose whether they buy products that are banned by the EU but likely to form part of a trade deal with the US, such as chlorine-washed chicken.

Animal welfare groups said this would drive down standards

< so much for those who think a post-Brexit UK can have higher standards - the pressure is all the other way >

The report, Farming Tomorrow, acknowledged widespread fears that
“lower prices will come at the cost of lowering standards”.

But it claimed that British farmers “used unnecessary standards to keep out cheaper competitors”.

Hugo Rifkind‏ @hugorifkind

I am so sick of the people who shat the bed telling me off for being unenthused about living in shit.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/08/2017 08:18

One issue that is often overlooked about letting in cheap food produced with lower standards:
either
UK farmers keep their current standards - and can't compete, so go bust
or
the entire UK meat industry gives up exporting to the EU. their nearest market - and many will go bust

  • The Canadian meat producers org said that even with CETA they don't have access to the EU market,
because some farmers export to the US and hence follow US rules, but EU requirements are basically that all farmers - not just exporters - in an exporting country keep to EU standards (to minimize the chance of lower standard produce getting in the food chain)
lalalonglegs · 02/08/2017 08:35

I do hope that this isn't another false dawn:

Cross party push to force vote to stay in the EEA

Labour MPs such as Stephen Kinnock, Chuka Umunna and Heidi Alexander are considering ways to work with some Tories to keep the UK in EEA, at least for a transitional period, when the bill comes to the House of Commons in early September. One option would be for a backbencher to table an amendment asking the UK to remain in the EEA during the post-Brexit transition.

One Conservative MP fighting against hard Brexit told the Guardian it could be the biggest battle of the EU withdrawal bill and that there was a chance of defeating the government unless it gave more guarantees about the transitional period.
