Westminstenders: The Brexit Apprentice

Theresa May is increasing looking like she is running an episode of the Apprentice with two teams trying to compete in their plan for Brexit. Complete with the obligatory reprehensible contestants.

On one side we have Team Creationists intent on hard Brexit and on the other we have Team Sensibles desperate to get a softer deal.
May herself has been held hostage by seasoned expert negotiators the DUP. Once No 10 has reported the deal was done, only for the DUP to say it wasn’t. Then it said, it would be settled today. But the DUP disagreed and said ‘the weekend’. Now its 'next week'.

Meanwhile the Queen has been messed about with a scapegoat over when her Queen’s Speech will be. It’s likely to be a week on Monday.
Meanwhile the Brexit department is also in chaos.

The Number two in the department was sacked and replaced by a Remainer, and the number three quit amongst reports that he no longer thought Brexit was achievable and that there was no way that the Great Repeal Act could pass through the Lords. He has been replaced by the Head of the infamous Arch-Brexit Whatsapp group.

Oh and Gove got hired. Nuff said on that one.

After some slight back tracking from David Davis, Hard Brexit is still on in all its glory. Negotiations are going ahead next week. Well that’s what we are saying. The EU, on the other hand, don’t won’t to go ahead until we have an officially sworn in government. Which seems pretty fair enough.

Tune in to find out which Team wins this week’ The Brexit Apprentice

Sinn Fein accuses May of not honouring Good Friday agreement.

Gerry Adams said as he left No 10:

"We have just finished a meeting with the British prime minister and her secretary of state. And we told her very directly that she was in breach of the Good Friday agreement and we itemised those matters in which she was dilatory or in default in relation to that agreement."

So, if May is starting brexit negotiations on Monday who is she negotiating with? I understood that Barnier has said he doesn't want to negotiate with the Tories until they have confirmed their mandate, so after a queens speech. Are they going to all go to Brussels and sit in an empty room? Confused

HashiAsLarry · 15/06/2017 17:42

Never really envisaged a point I'd utter these words but... good on Gerry Adams

TheElementsSong · 15/06/2017 17:45

How the hell are we starting negotiations with the EU when we don't even have a fucking government? And a plan which consists of "Give us everything we demand, or we'll shoot ourselves in the head"?

And are Leavers seriously happy about this state of affairs? (No, don't tell me, I know the answer).

whatwouldrondo · 15/06/2017 17:46

Charm Not "my builders" but the industry that serves the London domestic market, which has been expanded and standards improved by the entrance of overseas players who have a competitive advantage because of their skills, motivation and customer service. Asevery has posted the large sale construction industry does not just want overseas builders, as in the domestic market, it needs them if it is to thrive and meet building targets.

So now you have moved away from claiming that overseas builders are worse trained and have lower standards to the issues of coordination?
I know only too well the difficulties coordinating teams on large scale business projects, in fact across a very large business and across overseas markets. That is the meat of the job of every senior manager in the UK, and in multi national companies, the world. I can think of any number of factors that can derail the best laid of strategic plans, poor communication and cultural differences are indeed two but that can be between native speakers who are all British. There are a whole load of other reasons why teams do not work effectively together, poor understanding of the overall plan, turf wars, individual attitudes, failure to motivate. These are just facts of business life and managers have to overcome them.

As I have said before I can see your points entirely about the poor standards of management, cost cutting, greed etc. in the construction industry. It is just that a failure to manage teams effectively is not the fault of the team members, it is the fault of the managers. If overseas builders are needed they need to address the issues of British (are you sure there are not problems of attitudes and culture on their part?) and overseas builders being enabled to communicate effectively. It is something every multinational business in the world manages....

As I said before SF will watch and wait....

I'm really glad Owen Smith is shadow NI minister. We may need him to dig us out of this mess....he worked with the wonderful Mo

Charmageddon · 15/06/2017 17:48

And are Leavers seriously happy about this state of affairs?

No.

whatwouldrondo · 15/06/2017 17:49

I would have liked to see Theresa May's face as she was confronted with the realities of NI, and was forced to look outside her rabbit hole. Or is she even capable of understanding what goes on outside her rabbit hole?

BiglyBadgers · 15/06/2017 17:52

I am not sure she even knows she is in a rabbit hole

RhythmAndStealth · 15/06/2017 17:53

Bigley Didn't Camden seize empty houses to turn into council houses in the 70s?

RhythmAndStealth · 15/06/2017 17:54

“Great Britain may be an island, but economically it is the most interconnected country in Europe … Brexit was never a particularly good idea. Now, following the most recent election, Brexit is defunct.”

I do hope they're right.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 15/06/2017 18:04

I met him at a hustings and voted for him. Yes he fucked up with what he said on occasion. But in reality I really don't think that makes him a sexist. Or no more than about 45% of the population Confused

Peregrina · 15/06/2017 18:04

I wonder if Corbyn can get on the blower to Barnier and tell him that May's team has as yet no mandate?

BiglyBadgers · 15/06/2017 18:06

Gosh, I'm not sure Rhythm, but I have long been a supporter of the idea that buildings and land left empty for more then a certain period should be returned to the state for use as council housing. I think it is appalling that we have so much empty housing in London while people sleep rough and can't afford to pay their rents.

BiglyBadgers · 15/06/2017 18:08

By the way Charm I too have family members who are tradesmen. One of them is in France and I am sure would be pretty disgusted that British colleagues moaned about having to communicate with foreigners.

He has in fact gone so native he walked into his northern local and ordered a pint, in French.......

BiglyBadgers · 15/06/2017 18:24

I am not sure that David Davis realises it takes 2 sides to negotiate and the other side has not agreed they will do so before the government has a mandate. It's going to be just like the DUP isn't it?

"We are starting negotiations Monday"
"No your not"
"We have a deal in the bag"
"No you don't"
Hmm
