Westministenders: The Zombie PM

Back from the dead, May carries on whilst the vultures circle.

She had tried to out smart her rivals by running of to the palace to tell the queen she could form a government before they could act.

Definitely she stood and pretended nothing had changed. Except everything had. The wrath of her party was unleashed and there was open revolt. She has been summoned to appear before men in grey suits tomorrow at 5pm to hear their verdict.

How do she decide to make amends and reach out to moderate Tories? By sleeping with the DUP. And appointing Gove to her Cabinet.

How long will this last? How long can it last?

To be fair Brexit directly impacts NHS, public services, benefits. The fall of Sterling consequent on the vote is the cause of inflation.

To provide effective public services we need tax receipts. Anything that nukes the economy like hard Brexit will have a devastating impact on them.

So you'll be much better off Sostenuto with no Brexit or a soft Brexit.

WorshipTheGourd · 12/06/2017 13:41

"BBC is now reporting that Queen's speech has been delayed because of problem with accessing goat skin vellum on which to write it"

Oh, that has May'd my day.... (see what I did there?)

Completely hilarious (if it wasn't all so bloody scary...)

LurkingHusband · 12/06/2017 13:42

Anyone who watches any history programmes will know that the national archives holds parliamentary proceedings going back to the 1600s - all perfectly legible on vellum.

Paper would have disintegrated.

As for a digital solution .... bear in mind the 1980s BBC Domesday project is no longer readable as laserdiscs hit the scrapheap.

squoosh · 12/06/2017 13:42

Wasn't there some to-do or other about goat vellum a few months back?

HashiAsLarry · 12/06/2017 13:44

soso As far as a democratic vote, the most votes wins and that is final in a referendum
This is untrue in very many ways. Most referenda, run by people who aren't complete numpties unlike our governments, have minimum levels in terms of turnouts and a percentage that is taken as a definite result.
In fact our government were advised to do just that, but stated it wasn't necessary as this was just advisory.
There's a moral obligation, you can argue, that the reasons for and mechanisms of leaving were now looked into, but none for actually taking it as gospel.

woman12345 · 12/06/2017 13:44

Are we seeing a possible attempt to avoid democracy by just "not having" a Queens speech well..............

"They are in denial about what happened this week. They have fundamental problems with Brexit. We need a collaborative and co operative arrangement with EU. These are things to negotiate." Keir Starmer.

HashiAsLarry · 12/06/2017 13:45

And then she burnt the evidence patty
Damn you and logic Grin

woman12345 · 12/06/2017 13:47

@faisalislam 3m3 minutes ago
Sturgeon to @skynews: "Now we hear Queens speech delayed that raises concerns & questions about what is being cooked up behind closed doors"

woman12345 · 12/06/2017 13:48

@SamCoatesTimes
You don't mess with the Queen. Moving the Queen's speech is messing with the Queen. There are few bigger signs of an unstable chaotic gvt

PinkPeppers · 12/06/2017 13:51

What Remainers need to start doing NOW is effectively push a 'positive propaganda' agenda about what benefits the EU gives us. This links into Human Rights too.

YY to that but WHO will be holding the banner for Remain?
Not JC who woud be in the best place.
LD are too far down and wont be listened to...
Who else is there?

SeanSpicer · 12/06/2017 13:51

woman I'm hearing that in Ray Winstone's voice in my head - "you don't mess with the queen, get ahhhhht" Grin

HashiAsLarry · 12/06/2017 13:52

lords overruled on vellum
Was it this?
Another case of the Lords having a more modern grip on society!

WorshipTheGourd · 12/06/2017 13:54

Lurking
Sure, but surely they keep a wee bitty spare, for potential moments like this?

Sturgeon can shut up. She lost tons of seats for HER party by refusing to listen to the public about a Referendum, after all!

Sostenueto · 12/06/2017 13:54

Well what was the point of a referendum if the Government says it's just advisory? They triggered article50 so surely no turning back and David Davis just said talks start as planned. The only ones to blame for this complete shambles are the Conservatives. Ridiculous situation, there will be anarchy if it is reversed!

woman12345 · 12/06/2017 13:55

SeanSpicer Grin
All the frontrunners in the nascent Conservative leadership election would make voters less likely to back their party if they became leader, according to a new poll.
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/theresa-may-leadership-challenge-conservative-tory-leadership-election-2017-a7784226.html
More reasons why they can't find any goat skin vellum.^

HashiAsLarry · 12/06/2017 13:58

You hold advisory referenda to judge the mood of the electorate without being bound to its outcome.
You hold non-advisory referenda when you want or need the electorate's permission to do something.

The portraying of advisory referenda as being anything else was yet another lie.

Kaija · 12/06/2017 13:59

"there will be anarchy if it is reversed!"

Will there?

squoosh · 12/06/2017 14:02

What does British anarchy look like?

TatianaLarina · 12/06/2017 14:02

You don't hold referendums at all if you have any sense.

Favoured by fascists to give a veneer of democracy, they're an easily manipulable mob vote. Just ask the Germans who banned them after WWII.

Westministenders: The Zombie PM
HashiAsLarry · 12/06/2017 14:05

Very true tatiana
And if you must take leave of your senses, ask the advice of nations who do run them often, like ROI.

Sostenueto · 12/06/2017 14:05

No I am not better off as I await every day for the dreaded pips form. That is going to come whether brexit or not while a Tory government is in power. I am severely disabled, cannot get my pension(waspie) till I'm 66 and when I do get it it will be £30 less than what a pensioner gets now. I do not get free bus pass or winter fuel allowance even though I'm 64 and my mate who was born 1949 gets more in her state pension than I do on higher rate of ESA. So Brexit is nothing to me and if I lose my DLA which the majority is us do when we apply for pips then life really isnt worth living anymore.

lalalonglegs · 12/06/2017 14:05

Pink - I fear the future of Brexit is in Ruth Davidson's hands unless Keir Starmer can get hold of Corbyn and give him a good shake. (Although despite their long list of horrors, the DUP also favour a slightly softer Brexit than the Tories as they have concerns about a hard border with Ireland - it is their one redeeming feature.)

Sostenueto · 12/06/2017 14:08

Sorry that was meant for Tatiana, a lit of x posting.

TatianaLarina · 12/06/2017 14:09

ROI run much more tightly regulated referendums. There are rules around media coverage etc.
