Westministenders: Strong and Stable Theresa Date with Destiny

WELLLLL

Its just before 2.00am.

So far its the YouGov model all the way. Still a long way to go but, the Cons are not getting the top of their target list and Labour are doing very well in seats they just 'shouldn't be'.

Corbyn is now favourite to take the poison chalice of Brexit, but they may not be the largest party yet.

This is looking right now like 1974 not 1983.

May's potted regardless. I look forward to her resignation speech. Its still entirely possible that our next government is a Tory Minority under another leader.

The LDs are having a rough night so far. They are loosing deposits all over the place as they are squeezed out. But they still might hold the balance of power yet. Though they are pledged not to go into coalition.

Another election in the autumn? Brexit delayed and going soft and squishy?

I see that Arlene Foster has warned that 'our way of life is under threat from extremists'. Um, that would be you and your chums, Arlene.

everthibkyouvebeenconned · 09/06/2017 15:02

Hooey was looking particularly nutty last night. She could be deselected if she votes with her very close mate Arlene. I bloody hope so

Also isn't there a bit of gossip about Hooey and the DUP

General election 2017: the first decision a new universities minister should make

Nick Hillman looks at the tricky TEF questions that a new higher education minister could face on their first day

I know nothing about this. I wondered if anyone else did. Its just anything suddenly being axed like that the day after an election, has to be noteworthy.

Front page headline of Torygraph suggests even they are turning on May now...

"What's Ruth Davidson position on LBGT rights, abortion, creationism and the death penalty?"

Good point. This is going to get interesting.

Bright Blue has 140 Con MPs & its director has called for May to step down.

Triggering Tory leader contest requires 48 MPs.

Wha? Anyone know more about this?

I think dear Ruth (love her) will not stay quiet over this. Nor should she

I think dear Ruth (love her) will not stay quiet over this. Nor should she

As the new Tory poster child for Scotland, she must carry a hell of a lot of clout.

It seems like only yesterday the Tories were wailing about Labour in England being propped up by Scottish MPs.

PinkPeppers · 09/06/2017 15:15

@AdamBienkov
The Conservatives got just 2.4% more votes than Labour but ended up with 56 more seats. Britain's electoral system is a joke.

This actually also raise other massive issues with the electoral system itself.

RedToothBrush · 09/06/2017 15:15

Bright Blue is an independent think tank and pressure group for liberal conservatism.

Board of Directors:
Matthew d' Ancona
Ryan Shorthouse
Rachel Johnson (yes that one)
Alexandra Jezeph
Diane Banks
Phil Clarke

They have a list of their parliamentary supporters (pre yesterday).
Its a who is who of liberal conservatism by the look of it.

Except we had a chance to change it, and said No. Quite emphatically.

Of course we could revisit it, if it weren't for the "will of the people" mantra that gilds Brexit.

That said, once again, it's suited the two main parties - no incentive for them to rush to address electoral reform.

Judging by what Matthew d'Ancona writes in his weekly column in the Guardian they look much for the Timothy/Hill type view than the below-the-line frothers on ConservativeHome. The Telegraphy has been very critical of May for a long time during this campaign.

d'Ancona described the Tory Manifesto as running counter to those who said May was risk averse. How much of it, anyway, are they going to stick in the Queen's speech? Or it it just going to be getting going on Brixit, working out the deal, and then putting that in front of a general election?

Tory right: Steve Baker says the public have voted for two parties which both promised to leave the single market and this must be delivered

She's such a star, Ruth Davidson, May so doesn't deserve her.

NancyWake · 09/06/2017 15:37

Despite Starmer promising to leave the single market the manifesto didn't say so in such stark terms. It said wishywashily that there would be 'strong emphasis on retaining the benefits of the single market and customs union - which are essential for maintaining industries, jobs and businesses' and that EU citizens' rights (and reciprocal UK citizens' rights) would be protected. So Baker's not entirely correct about that.

Well yes, because this showmance won't last 5 mins.

There will now be a steady drip of dirt on the DUP, their batshit policies, Foster's corruption, Brexit campaign funding etc.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/06/2017 15:53

I'm baffled by May's No. 10 speech Confused
Did she use the wrong one ?
Is that the speech she meant to use after winning a landslide ?

LurkingHusband · 09/06/2017 15:55

Has anyone elses irony meter exploded ?

Not only has Theresa May managed to lose a working majority. She is now forced to hold hands with the one party she pretty much tried to freeze out of Brexit.

Chaining herself to the DUP is effectively bringing the one party and country that will be most directly affected by Brexit into the negotiations ???

I wonder what the number crunchers are starting to say about the shift in demographics before another election ? More rise of the young, less old blue Tories ?

BigChocFrenzy · 09/06/2017 15:56
