Westministenders: Its WAR. Huh!? What is that good for? Negotiations apparently

Theresa May has declared war on the EU. She is going to be a ‘bloody difficult woman’ after she got caught out by a highly predictable leak.

Apparently, the EU are trying to rig an election she seems almost dead cert to win. They deliberately timed the leak to interfere with an election May decided the timing of. May was not supposed to be at the dinner, but after she announced the election she decided that she had to get in on the act for some reason. Wildly speculating here, but could this be because she wanted the political mileage herself?

No it wasn't a preplanned strategy. Don't be stupid. That would suggest they had the foggiest clue and a plan. Nope, the war declaration was an opportunist damage limitation exercise, used to maximise political capital.

She has now even further alienated the EU. It seems difficult to conceive how any deal will be done. Instead it looks like the election is trying to set us up to crash out. Whether the ‘No deal is better than a bad deal’ happens to make the 3 page Tory Manifesto remains to be seen.

This would leave EU nationals and British national aboard in legal and social limbo.

There is also a feud building over the Brexit leaving bill, which is steadily climbing. We can not progress to the second stage of Brexit without resolving this. Again, this seems unlikely.

Thirdly, a settlement with Ireland is a top priority for the EU, and plans are being drawn up to make allowances for any potential United Ireland. This is a subject that is still to be talked about on any level really. May has been much more interested in the fate of Scotland and battling with Nicola Sturgeon.

That’s the thing. May is like the playground bully who goes around going “Do you wanna scrap ?, Do ya? DO YA?” and generally throws their weight around and most of the time gets their own way as a result. The trouble with the strategy is when the bigger kid comes along and thumps the bully, for being a cocky little shit and doesn’t like their kid brother getting picked on.

The trouble is that May is setting it up, to try and make it look like the poor little Britain has been picked on to her parents, so they go around accusing the big kid of all sorts rather than admitting their little darling is a nasty little shit.

It’s not going to end well is it? You can’t help but feel that at some point they’ll all end up in the Headmasters office and the WTO/UN/International Courts will rule against us for being a bunch of dickheads. No doubt May, will stick to character, hold a grudge and demand to leave them or say they have no authority over the UK.

That or we really will end up declaring war on Spain over Gibraltar. By accident of course. Probably to keep the ConKip party together and avoid a split.

Rule Britannia. Britannia rules. Erm, not a lot these days.

'In the US, the government is bound by strict laws about what data it can collect on individuals. But, for private companies anything goes. ' Wow.

Marine Le Pen is 'the real deal' according to Farage and more importantly 'better for Brexit Britain. There you go.

Cailleach1 · 07/05/2017 11:02

The UK gov't won't be negotiating with Merkel and Macron. The negotiating team have been appointed by the EU and have been given the directive issuing the Council principles. May won't be sitting in a room with Merkel and Macron on this issue and people saying lets talk about article 1 now. Wrt the FTA with the CETA, they only came together to sign it off. Trudeau even had to come back later on that 'cos of Wallonia. Was Trudeau hammering on Downing Street to deal with the CETA?

Cailleach1 · 07/05/2017 11:07

Sorry, I'm was talking myself through Marr and Peston with Hunt, Gove and Farage.

HesterThrale · 07/05/2017 11:11

This is interesting. If I'm reading it right, all opposition parties are standing down to back a NHS progressive alliance candidate to try and unseat Jeremy Hunt. Wouldn't that be delicious?

05/05/2017 22:39 RedToothBrush "Theresa May has declared war on the EU"

No.
No she has not. As I have learned from personal experience Remoaners get very confused and even more sensitive than they already are when it come to discussing declarations of war in Europe.

It was your pal Junkers who decided to leak a one sided version of a private dinner to the German press. It was his choice to do this. It is in his interests to portray the UK as "losing" in this negotiation and the EU as "winning" as this is his only hope of holding the EU together.

No one's biting, comrade. Smile

lalalonglegs · 07/05/2017 11:27

That would be absolutely delicious. But Dr Irvine stood against him in 2015 and only got 4851 votes. Hunt got almost 60% of the vote and Ukip was second; in 2010 he got 58.7% of the vote. So, while I live in hope...

That would be wonderful Hester Grin

Just had our lib dem leaflet through the door. The candidate has been a county councillor for years and, as someone who has worked with them I would say she is one of the better ones. She was my mum's councillors when she was ill and my mum said she was super so I think she is a good choice. The leaflet is very heavy on the brexit angle , which makes sense as we were majority remain here. Also talks a lot about the NHS, again a good move as the NHS is one of the biggest employers in the area so lots of people are very passionate about protecting it.

Trying to remain hopeful we can return to a lib dem MP. Smile

Labour are just trying to survive talking about issues as if they won' be affected by Brexit.

The PR system in Scotland is not being advertised. That Tory guy in Shettleston was elected on something like 3rd or 4th on something like the 10th/11th count of the vote. So he probably got few first perferences and was dependent on the cumulation of transfers.

prettybird · 07/05/2017 11:56

Cailleach - he was elected on the 11th round, so will have got in after every single round of preferences had been transferred. Unfortunately, many people didn't/don't understand the STV system and will only have either put a cross against their preferred candidate (if they only did that, then at least their vote got counted in the 1st round) or only ranked a few candidates, so that their vote effective ll gets elongated after it goes beyond the number they ranked. It was why it was important to "vote until you boak".

BigChocFrenzy · 07/05/2017 12:10

11th round ShockShock
Is there a need for more candidates - even of the Monster Raving Loony Party type ! - as choices to put ahead of Tories or sectarian Orange Order (According to the OO celebratory tweet, a few of their stooges apparently sneaked in as Labour candidates )

prettybird · 07/05/2017 12:30

I wrote earlier about the Orange Order being proud to have got members in as both Labour and Conservative councillors BigChoc ShockSad

The "Vote Until You Boak" approach should more accurately have been "Vote until you have boaked" which is what I had to do when I ranked UKIP above the Conservative Envy

Pretty - just saw this which I laughed out loud at (probably will be true though)

Sunday Times celebrates: Brexit brings bonanza for billionaires

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/brexit-brings-bonanza-for-billionaires-cftzdwrvj

"the country’s 1,000 richest individuals and families have seen their combined fortunes surge by 14%, or £83bn, to £658bn over the past year"

It's certainly the response May would give. Do you know what a Mugwump is? Strong and Stable government.

prettybird · 07/05/2017 12:52

GrinCalyx

More worrying though is the noises that the Orange Order is making already about opposing/blocking funding to Catholic schools. While I dislike the splitting of education into denominational (in practice Catholic although there is one Jewish primary and one Church of Scotland primary -in the whole of Scotland I think ) and non-denominational, I don't think the opposition to it should be based on hatred and suspicion of Catholics Sad

It could be argued that while we do have state denominational schools, we should seriously be considering Muslim schools. That would really get the OO's backs up Grin

Ds' non-denom primary was 60% "ethnic minorities", so its once a term assemblies were devoted to Eid, Diwali, Christmas - and the final one for the Leavers. No Easter assemy! Shock (Wink)

Tanith · 07/05/2017 13:01

"Hunt not answering on Peston. Sticking to general nothingness. "

I expect he was a bit distracted. Jeremy Hunt has his own problems at the moment. There is a concerted effort to have just one challenger standing against him on a pro-NHS platform in an attempt to unseat him.

General election 2017: Labour rules out tax rises for 95% of earners
www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/39829723

They have been hinting at a policy of raising taxes for those earning over £80k for a while now, but dithering about it in interviews. About time they finally got a backbone and said it.

The Mental Health Act generally works perfectly well and was amended not that long ago. The complaints I hear are from relatives who are shocked at just how ill someone has to be to get sectioned and are begging for their loved one to get treatment and we have to tell that there is nothing we can do unless the person asks for help. The MHA is very very heavily weighted towards human rights - the person who has the ultimate say in detaining someone is a social worker who can overrule a consultant psychiatrist. Patients can appeal to an independent Tribunal and get a solicitor for free and a patient's Nearest Relative can apply for their discharge at any time and that can only be blocked if the patient is deemed to pose an immediate risk to others.
Mental health care is in total crisis - in my trust, 4 patients killed themselves in the last year while waiting for an inpatient bed. A bed manager (who is not a clinician) ordered a nurse to send a patient on leave to free up a bed for a detained patient. The patient who was sent on leave went home and killed his mother and left his sister with life threatening injuries. The average time an 'urgent' referral to CAMHS waits to be seen is 6 months. Patients are regularly sent to hospital hospital hundreds of miles away, making it impossible for families to visit.I've worked in mental health for 20 years and it's unrecognisable compared to when I started. However, it has bugger all to do with the Mental Health Act.
Norman Lamb from the LDs came to visit our team a few years ago and was absolutely lovely and actually went on home visits with staff and spent hours chatting to patients, including a few who were pretty unwell. His son has mental health problems so he genuinely 'gets' it.
Jeremy Cunt and his sound bites can fuck off.
