Just been looking at the numbers on that one Corcory, not as significant as some would believe. Less than 200k EU Nationals. Approx 30k of them are under 16 and another 30k are Irish and therefore get a vote regardless. The margin of defeat last time round was 400k even with their support. (2m No to 1.6m Yes). I don't think it is a given anyway that EU nationals would vote for Independence if their long term aim is to stay in the UK as a whole post Brexit. Almost half of EU Nationals in Scotland are Polish and they are pretty Eurosceptic atm.

squishysquirmy · 01/04/2017 00:11

howabout: The more sure you are that the polls, common sense and all the evidence you've seen point to a referendum going your way, the more gutted you feel when it doesn't! Wink So don't assume too much about a second indyref.

howabout · 01/04/2017 00:26

I can live with the Indyref result either way as long as we don't end up back in the EU Squishy. If TM looks like weakening her position I might even vote for Independence on the basis that if the rUK and the EU come to an accommodation there would be no way the EU would let Scotland back in to rabble rouse. Grin

Niamer · 01/04/2017 10:20

Thanks SemiPermanent . My SOH has gone AWOL this week!

RailwayCuttings · 01/04/2017 11:43

About 10 days ago I saw a letter from a Scots man living in England who said that if there were to be a Referendum about Scottish independence & remaining in the EU, he as a Scot living in England would NOT be allowed to vote. If he was a Scot living in another country, he would be allowed. I thought I had cut out the letter, but I didn't.

Furthermore, he says that all the Poles, Baltics and other EU living in Scotland would be allowed to vote. Extraordinary.

Olympiathequeen · 01/04/2017 12:47

Corcory. Can EU citizens living in Scotland vote in a Independence referendum? I thought Scots living in other parts of the UK weren't allowed to vote?

Really curious now!

howabout · 01/04/2017 13:23

Olympia yes they can - comes under the local elections voting regs. - and no Scots in other parts of the UK can't for the same reason. Too "complicated" to do anything else because there is no definition of a "Scottish" citizen and apparently "Civic Nationalism" dictates that your nationality and rights in a country crystallise after 3 months residence. You lose them just as quickly.

Far from creating a self-determinant Scotland the SNP are intent on obliterating Scottishness with all its quirks.

howabout · 01/04/2017 13:26

Barely a whisper about this in the last Indyref is the most extraordinary thing of all railway. I hope all EU Nationals and citizens of whatever country will pay slightly more attention to their rights and responsibilities and those of others post Brexit.

rorty
Are you a champagne fan?
I dont like champagne but i wonder if there is a nice one out there
Like you can have different dryness of wine for example

I'm rather partial to Tattinger Champagne but my consumption has been seriously curtailed since retiring and being on a limited income.

I have been reading good things about English sparkling wines (not allowed to call it champagne) which have won an award or two so am going to give it a try when the next celebratory occasion occurs. I'm trying to support British businesses now, so a perfect excuse Smile

That excuse may be getting a date to go into hospital for an operation which my consultant assured me would be in February. Since I've just had a letter with an appointment for a bone density scan at the end of May which will be needed prior to the op, I'm not holding my breath Grin

I do like my champagne dry and I think if you fancy something a bit sweeter it may be good to check out Cava or Prosecco, I'm personally not a fan of either but it just depends on what you like.

I see Sturgeon is now threatening to try and obstruct the Great Repeal Bill. She knows that Westminster can and will override Holyrood on the subject, so will no doubt use the opportunity to continue bleating about an indyref. I'm not sure why since all the polls indicate that the Scots don't want an indyref at the moment, a couple of hundred thousand even signed a petition to that effect.

RailwayCuttings don't you think that is the most absurd thing? That your own people are denied a voice if living in England but anyone, from anywhere in the world living in Scotland gets to vote! It's stark raving bonkers IMO.

Rushes off to kitchen to eat a Tunnocks teacake before Sturgeon bans sales to England Shock

howabout · 01/04/2017 13:53

It's ok rorty I'll smuggle them over the border for you with as much irn bru as you need. Any other requests?

I agree with you about champagne being very much a case of personal taste and preference. I also prefer dry.

If we are on the whisky then I am not a fan of most of the island single malts as they are too peaty for me. Glenfiddoch or the MacCallan are more my thing.

The misspent youth is mostly a thing of the past for me also though.

All the best for the hospital. I hope the NHS is good to you Flowers

RortyCrankle · 01/04/2017 14:10

Ah how kind howabout - anything I can smuggle back to you from this side of the border?

Oh and while you're in smuggling mode, how about a few bottles of Glenmorangie?

You can give the island malts a miss. I once worked for the Scotch Whisky Association in London back in my youth and accompanied a bunch of journalists to Islay. After a visit to Port Ellen followed by a ceilidh in the evening, all fuelled by Laphroaig, my liver still remembers it well Grin

Thanks for your good wishes Smile

howabout · 01/04/2017 14:19

Believe it or not London builders tea stewed properly with 2 sugars is the best in the World, but I am not sure how well it travels. Also partial to Fortnum's posh sugar.

I propose anyone who cannot sign up to the substantial majority of these quirks should not be allowed to call themselves "Scottish" and vote in Indyrefs.

RortyCrankle · 01/04/2017 14:27

So one does all one's grocery shopping from Fortnums does one? What makes the sugar posh, apart from the price?

Loved the link.

My personal Scots-o-metre is to ask if a person knows what peely wally means - if they don't they aren't Scottish. Very scientific but effective Grin

Olympiathequeen · 01/04/2017 14:31

I am completely shocked with that. That is really weighting the dice in favour of independence. Do away with the vote of Scots because they are living elsewhere presumably because they are not real Scots and give the vote to young teenagers who are idealistic and unrealistic in equal measures.

SemiPermanent · 01/04/2017 14:49

Love the link!

I identify with almost all - and got a bit nostalgic for my old boyfriends whilst reading it ShockBlush

I often look peely-wally Rorty Grin

SemiPermanent · 01/04/2017 14:50

And sleekit is another word that is perfectly descriptive.

howabout · 01/04/2017 14:54

Only in my head rorty Grin. They have or used to have, it's been a while, extra large rainbow coloured sugar crystals. Perfect for feeding to the Unicorns. When I lived in London I mostly ate in Benjys and the Stockpot and didn't bother grocery shopping at all.

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 01/04/2017 15:27

Think you are right rorty

Pefer a cava or prosecco when ever i have tried sparking

Had a nice white rioja the other day ni sparkle though Grin

Seem to prefer some of the speyside whiskey myself

RortyCrankle · 01/04/2017 15:32

Totally agree Olympiathequeen It defies logic and if I were a Scot in England I would be furious.

Aww do you Semi ? Hopefully not this week - I'll try out sleekit at the next opportunity Smile

Extra large rainbow coloured sugar crystals - wowee - I haven't been to Fortnums since I retired and moved out of London. Can't see sugar crystals online but nearly £24 for four eclairs takes my breath away Shock www.fortnumandmason.com/products/eclair-tasting-selection-box-box-of-4?taxon_id=813 I had a pack of 4 eclairs delivered with my supermarket order this morning - they were £1; I do hope my friends don't think I'm a cheapskate lol.

I'm sure the unicorns will survive Smile

howabout · 01/04/2017 15:33

Is that "e" there just to wind me up rufus Shock

For anyone who missed what happens when 2 Scotsmen get together to clarify a debating position. ( Andrew Neil is exactly like my Dad who also had a penchant for Blue Nun). Wine

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 01/04/2017 15:36

Yes it is how Grin

Actually its not...stupid autocorrect Hmm

Ever since i downloaded the new i10 update Hmm

RortyCrankle · 01/04/2017 15:38

I missed your post whilst I was faffing with the Fortnum website Rufus

I fear you are in deep doo doo - you have committed the cardinal sin of describing Scotch as whiskey. I will leave it to howabout to hand out the necessary punishment.

PS I'm a fan of Chateau Neuf Du Pape if you feel the need to bribe me for a lighter sentence for your heinous crime Grin

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 01/04/2017 17:16

Nope not feeling that need rorty Grin

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 01/04/2017 17:18

RufusTheRenegadeReindeer · 01/04/2017 17:47
