Westministenders: Danger of "accidental" Brexit (whoops !) ?

i.e. Brexit without a deal - NOT intentionally so - due to UK govt incompetence and mutual UK/EU misunderstandings

The govt is proceeding from abysmal ignorance on a Brexit journey which may blunder into disaster.

Prominent Leave campaigner Richard North:

"The UK Government's narrative seems to rest on the belief that the EU will cave in under pressure, and is thus giving every sign that it is prepared to push negotiations to the wire.

If, on the other hand, the EU are determined not to budge, especially as, with their own White Paper on "The Future of Europe" triggering internal discussions unrelated to Brexit, they are not necessarily fully focused on the "British problem".

As a result, we could end up with an "accidental Brexit",
where the UK negotiators overplay their hand, ending up in the UK leaving without an agreement, forcing it to rely on WTO rules.

Most likely, it will take very little to convince the EU that Mrs May is bluffing – as the effect of the WTO option is likely to be disastrous for the UK economy.

We could thus have each side misreading each other, making the accidental Brexit all the more likely."

her most famous naval vessel now is a yellow robot submarine called BoatyMcBoatface.

With a name chosen by the British public.

The UK laptop ban is significantly different to the US one in that it applies to U.K. as well as certain middle eastern airlines and does not apply to the big subsidised middle eastern airlines that have built up big market shares riding on their geographical position between West and the East, Emirates and Qatar......

So hard to argue it is a business led decision but at the same time it highlights that the US ban is......

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2017 09:29

NY Times tweet of the day from yesterday:

Mohamed El Dahshan @eldahshan
Every criminal in the Middle East:
"Oh no! We can't take the direct flight to the US! I hate connecting flights!"

Cancels criminal plans

He subsequently said:
^I plan on boycotting @AmericanAir , @Delta , @USAirways, and @British_Airways. Their govs can't bully us into choosing them.
#ElectronicsBan^

American Airlines @AmericanAir
@eldahshan This has no impact on American Airlines customers. We'd love to fly you to all the amazing places we go.

Mohamed El Dahshan @eldahshan
That's precisely the point. Thus proving the absurdity + bias of this decision. So, no. I'd rather transit somewhere than give you a dime.

It's almost a double bonus. Screw other airlines and discourage visitors of the 'wrong' ethnic group. Make them second class and suspects. Pure genius. All dressed up as security. I'm sure I've seen stuff like this before in history...

Dh studied an earlier version of this book when he was at Uni in the late 70s

Internal Colonialism: Celtic Fringe in British National Development https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0765804751/ref=cmswrcpapi_qmK0yb24AZBD7

It explains a lot about WM's attitude towards the devolved administrations, as well as its inability to accept that the Empire is long over because it isn't, they are the remnants Hmm

UK Millionaires think Brexit will make them richer
Quite interesting

Peregrina · 22/03/2017 09:37

But ditched as well I think in favour of something eminently more respectable and forgettable ?
The main research vessel was given the sensible name of David Attenborough - Jo Johnson overruled the public's wish on this, but the robot vehicles, rejoice in the name Boaty McBoatface. Still at least being undersea robots, no one will see the stupidity most of the time, and even if fish and whales and whatever live at the bottom can read, they won't care.

"EU chiefs have warned airlines including easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways that they will need to relocate headquarters and sell off shares to European nationals if they want to continue flying routes within continental Europe after Brexit."

Source: Guardian. Can't link from the app, unfortunately.

There will be no deal.

Theresa May and David Davis are inherently incapable of negotiation. It's just not what they do. I suspect that is possibly the reason they were chose in the first place.

From that article, "....amid concerns at a senior EU level that too many in the aviation industry are in denial about the consequences of the UK’s decision to leave the bloc."

So not just TM and the 3 Stooges and many of the Brexiteers Wink

ElenaGreco123 · 22/03/2017 10:03

On the laptop ban I am told that the airport lounges in Dubai and Doha are full of grey haired Brit travellers travelling east and back. Most business and budget travellers travel on the northern routes east. I have had many conversations with bemused people in the East who have had the full "we have got our country back" speel from travellers using the grey pound. We can't go affecting the ability of all those Brexiteers to use their laptops en route Hmm

woman12345 · 22/03/2017 10:15

Isn't Trump using security as a fig leaf for autarkic (economically self sufficient < little bit hitlery>) policy?

ElenaGreco123 · 22/03/2017 10:17

mother If the laptop ban is about protectionism, then it means that US travellers like BA and the UK would dearly love to sell more arms to the Middle East.
