That's all. Pop over and sit down quietly if you like.

Who know what I might misquote next? :)

Smile During the very worst days of apartheid, I was on yet another demonstration in London, in the cold and snow, we were all fed up. (Not as fed up as the political prisoners in South Africa but.....)

Bishop Tutu was the speaker. He saw we were sad, and sang a little song for us to cheer us up.

It worked and apartheid fell. Smile

I love misquoting, and tbh pleased that two such cool writers got a mention on mn.

lalalonglegs · 16/03/2017 17:34

Oh, I'm very glad no one is getting shouty Smile.

I was thinking about knitting some nice soft patchwork squares and making a blanket. I feel the need of a blanket in these times. Very soft wool and pale colours, something to wrap myself up in (or hide under).

I like this quote by Malcolm Forbes: "Diversity is the art of thinking independently together." We'll get there one day.

TwoLeftSocks · 16/03/2017 17:35

May I join you please? I can offer some Greek booze of questionable origin and a need to avoid mainstream news and social media.

TheWoodlander · 16/03/2017 17:44

I like the thought of knitting, v peaceful.

Places a framed picture of Desmond Tutu on the wall of our little corner: Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.

I had the immense privilege of living and working in NL for about 6 years. Wonderful people, wonderful place. Still can't believe I didn't get around to applying for citizenship before I left...but I've always felt a strong affiliation with the Dutch. Been thinking a lot about my wonderful former EU life today. Fantastic memories.

I'm so happy for them. What a relief. DH is working there this week and said it all went nuts there yesterday night. Good nuts Smile

cantkeepawayforever · 16/03/2017 18:06

Poundland, agree. I worked for an Anglo-Duitch company for a number of years and loved the Dutch approach to life (thouigh not the soured milk drink at meetings....)

And I'm wondering, how do we set out a vision of those European values that endure whatever nonsense happens in the next decade?

I've been thinking about values a lot because there seems to be such a disconnect between what I believed we stood for and the behaviour I see around me. I remember a mum at the school gates waving her young child off, and shouting "be kind'. I thought what a powerful mantra to go to school with. So my number one value for the future is 'be kind'.

smashedinductionhob · 16/03/2017 18:14

it is funny I think maybe it was in the tv series they moved the scene to the ship.

It's about being Catholic and unable to remarry. She says something like "it's like the one thing Nanny couldn't deal with that had to wait till mummy came."

must be funny being that posh.

I have a new posh neighbour. He catches pigeons. He is probably nice. We don't talk about Br...

Yep, you could do a lot worse than be kind. You already started with the well, Smash this is it.
When this all kicked off, I decided to learn more languages. Did a free course with University of Groningen learning Dutch last autumn (enjoyed it, forgot it, but......)
www.futurelearn.com/courses/dutch
In fact I've done a few free online courses to avoid the obvious since November 9th.
Why does he catch pigeons?

Tanith · 16/03/2017 18:25

I'm so sorry, Dapplegrey1. When you wrote "Who were they?", I rashly assumed you meant "Who were they?"

Never mind, I think Smashed has answered you now.

dapplegrey1 · 16/03/2017 18:34

Tanith - I reread my original question to smashed and I agree, it did read as if I was asking who they were.
I should have phrased my question more clearly.
Hmm....I wonder what Waugh and Greene would've made of Brexit.

Tanith · 16/03/2017 18:47

No problem Smile
I guessed, from your follow up, that I'd misunderstood!

woman12345 · 16/03/2017 18:48

< puts another log on fire> hi there dapplegrey1

So, another story. After the Fukushima earthquake, a buddhist monk was on radio 4(From our own Correspondent, I think). He was racing round the affected areas, helping those affected by this terrifying disaster, even more so for the Japanese. He had on Led Zeppelin blasting out the on his music system, and when the interviewer asked why are you doing this? His answer was, "I am compassion". It still is one of the best things I've ever heard.

And the cool thing about compassion is it heals the giver and the receiver, good stuff. Sometimes difficult to locate, but powerful stuff.

smashedinductionhob · 16/03/2017 21:01
