Westministers: The Lords Strike Back

RedToothBrush · 01/03/2017 19:41

This needs no fanfare or lengthy post. Just this:

The Lords are demanding amendments unilateral protection for EU citizens.

Labour was split 358 for an amendment to 256 against.

This is after Amber Rudd had tried to reassure the Lords by writing a letter assuring peers that EU citizens would be treated with the utmost respect.

Utmost respect = an amendment to guarantee unilateral support.

Today is a good day. It should have been done in the first place.

Me too red

RhuBarbarella · 03/03/2017 11:03

Oh ffs, I live in Scotland and have English friends, my husband speaks proper English. So do I actually. We've been all over the place, countryside, cities. I don't recognise what you're saying.

prettybird · 03/03/2017 11:03

I think it was Tryingtosaveup who said that people voted according to whether it would benefit them.

I think that is devaluing the thought that many although not all put into their vote.

I personally am fortunate enough not to be affected financially in the short term at least by the Brexit vote. I voted Remain as I believed that was the best thing for the whole of the UK - despite the fact that my personal political objectives (as a supporter of independence) would be served by Scotland "bring pulled out of the EU against her will").

I do think it is somewhat hypocritical disingenuous of May to tell the Scots not to vote SNP in the Council elections to show that "they don't want a second referendum" and at the same time telling the Scottish Government to concentrate on local issues. Confused

YERerseISootTHEwindy · 03/03/2017 11:05

Well I hope for your sake Rhu that this continues.

HashiAsLarry · 03/03/2017 11:09

It's not fun to have racist abuse at you as a direct result of the leave vote. But then as much as I got it I'm not in any way stupid or ignorant enough to claim I could understand how the average Asian or Black person feels. Nor for my black european friends who are on a double hiding at the moment. Nor do I think the answer is peddling xenophobic policies largely because I have eyes and ears that see and hear resurgence of outward racist feelings in celebration of such policies.

whatwouldrondo · 03/03/2017 11:09

racially abused ?????

So you come from a race that has a long history of discrimination? Being excluded from life chances? Subject to physical violence and death?

I have a DD who is a redhead, she has had to put up with some disgusting rhetoric but does she share the experience of her African and Asian friends (whom thankfully few dare to abuse to their face in the same way) No

Get over yourself, you have no idea

Mistigri · 03/03/2017 11:09

I can well imagine the response a loud mouthed and opinionated English Tory would get in some quarters.

If you think you've suffered racial abuse, report it. There are laws to protect people from this. But "behaving like a wind-up merchant" isn't a protected characteristic under equality legislation.

HashiAsLarry · 03/03/2017 11:11

Though this is all part of the script for 'hate crimes haven't risen because the hate was always there'

YERerseISootTHEwindy · 03/03/2017 11:12

I never have publicly expressed any political views outside of the house.

YERerseISootTHEwindy · 03/03/2017 11:13

Just being english is enough for the assumptions to pour in. Particularly if from the south east.

YERerseISootTHEwindy · 03/03/2017 11:14

I have never compared what I have suffered to an race in particular other than perhaps my polish friend ( who is more right wing than me)

HashiAsLarry · 03/03/2017 11:14

We aren't far from a 'racist against your own country/nation' line

YERerseISootTHEwindy · 03/03/2017 11:15

You can not help where you were born.

YERerseISootTHEwindy · 03/03/2017 11:16

Just because people voted for brexit does not mean we want everyone to go home

YERerseISootTHEwindy · 03/03/2017 11:16

Immigrants are beneficial to society and to the economy

prettybird · 03/03/2017 11:17

Redandyellow - it was 38%, not 40% of Scots who voted to leave. That 2% makes all the difference - imagine if the UK Remain vote were overstated by 2% Wink

woman12345 · 03/03/2017 11:20

woman today's forecast: "hypocracy" (sic) accusations levelled at Nicola Sturgeon; howls of indignation as EU restricts visas for US travellers in tit-for-tat move.

And meanwhile north of the border.
" Global Britain precludes Scottish and Irish independence. (TRAITORs= excluded terminology DO NOT USE)

May is trusted and adored. Grin

woman12345 · 03/03/2017 11:21

May will achieve the unachievable today, and boost SNP and labour's ratings in Scotland.
Is she a secret Scottish nationalist? Grin

YERerseISootTHEwindy · 03/03/2017 11:22

No... I sound like I come from a race ( not technically as my bloodline is all scottish) which people are happy to make assumptions and generalisations about me.
They think it is OK to treat this entire set of people with as much hatred and bile as they like because of actions of ancestors.

I think this is shit because most of the generalisations are un founded and unreasonable.

I have no respect for anyone who will on one hand stand up for citizens of Europe (along with me) and on the other hand try to justify anti english racism.

RhuBarbarella · 03/03/2017 11:25

You cannot deny that the Brexit vote was in large parts about immigration. There is, see Tony Bennett, an old left wing case to be made against the eu. I know some people voted leave with that in mind. But in this climate that vote is going to be usurped by the loony right wing tories. TM turned out to be one of them, something that could have been foreseen looking at her history at the HO.
I got a lovely letter from the Scottish government after the referendum, saying that I was a valued person in Scottish society and warmly welcome. Nothing from Westminster though, I think if I do get a letter it will be very different in tone.

Peregrina · 03/03/2017 11:25

I can partly see where YER is coming from. Having grown up in Wales, I got a lot of quite unnecessary mockery when moving back to England. But, and I have said this consistently, small town and village mentality often dictates that someone from 20 miles away who isn't related to half the community is also an outsider/comer. And will be so for at least 30 years.

I still don't think it's as bad as the racist abuse that black and brown people get.

HashiAsLarry · 03/03/2017 11:26

HOUSE!!!

We're still playing script bingo right? Grin

Haha at least May can achieve something positive with her visit. For the SNP that is.

YERerseISootTHEwindy · 03/03/2017 11:28

The snp by default have removed such a chunk of labour and the libdems that there is nothing left of them.

By voting in purely self interest and without compromise for the rest if the uk they have put the tories in a very strong position.

The snp seek to use the fact that the tories are in power to break the union.

The irony...

YERerseISootTHEwindy · 03/03/2017 11:30

That's nice Rhu. .. doubt i'd get one Grin

woman12345 · 03/03/2017 11:31

^HOUSE!!!
We're still playing script bingo right^?

If this was a script for 'The Thick of It' it'd make a pretty good episode!
