Brexit

My Romanian dentist...

MrsPeterDoherty · 20/02/2017 12:39

...is leaving the UK shortly due to Brexit.

There is a shortage of NHS dentist already in my home town. It will be difficult to find a new practice with space available for my family and me.

Thanks to the Leave voters, I will have rotten teeth!

Brexit will lead to us training more dentists, nurses etc

and yet after the Brexit vote, the government confirmed it would be ending bursaries for training nurses and midwives from 2017.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 23/02/2017 13:15

Oh, its going to be brilliant. No one involved in the crumbling NHS, in social care, in science and research or in higher education thinks so but yeah...

HardcoreLadyType · 23/02/2017 13:25

FOM was lifted under Blair

Freedom of movement was established by the Maastricht Treaty of 1992. Blair became PM in 1997, five years later.

HardcoreLadyType · 23/02/2017 13:55

Brexit will lead to us training more dentists, nurses etc

There is nothing stopping us from training those people, now. Except political will, of course.

It's not that the EU has forbidden us from training dentists, and now we are freed from their shackles, we can train as many as we want to, while flicking the Vs, and eating bendy bananas, you know.

Teapot13 · 23/02/2017 14:24

Am I the only person puzzled by a German man named Birgit?

Voting for Brexit and then saying you didn't mean to end FoM is like voting for Trump and saying but you didn't vote for the travel ban. It's the logical and foreseeable result of your vote.

Peregrina · 23/02/2017 14:57

I assumed that Birgit was a woman, which just showed up the other posters lack of knowledge of other languages.

I worry that my EU dentist may leave too. Although he might have left to retire.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/02/2017 15:08

Didnt even see the first name....was just replying to anon

And i think to be fair that although birgit sounds enough like bridget to make me think that its a girls name the only thing it would show up would be lack of knowledge about the german language

Or is it a french name as well i thought brigette was french

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/02/2017 15:08

I am shit at all languages

Even english can be a struggle Smile

InformalRoman · 23/02/2017 15:26

So why doesn't he get a UK passport?

Apart from Birgit being a she, German nationals can only hold dual nationality with another EU country unless special permission is granted. So that's not going to work, unless you think she should renounce her German nationality a couple of years from now?

cowgirlsareforever · 23/02/2017 15:31

I know a dentist who says he's fed up of having to perform expensive NHS work on Eastern European migrants. I don't know if that's true or if they are making it up to suit their own political agenda.

Lohengrin · 23/02/2017 15:39

So many of these issues could be a avoded if we had a compulsory insurance based health service. It would make little or no difference to people already in the system but would deter those people who come here with the intention of seeking free health care and without the skills to obtain employment.
But anyone who suggests changing the 1950's funding model to something fit for a globalised world is immediately shouted down by people who do not understand the options and fear a move to a US style system.
Instead we pass laws which prevent British citizens married to foreignors enjoying their right to family life in their own country.

Peregrina · 23/02/2017 15:39

I know a dentist who says he's fed up of having to perform expensive NHS work on Eastern European migrants.

Then it's quite simple for him - he stops taking NHS patients and only takes private ones.

sonlypuppyfat · 23/02/2017 15:39

If they all go back who's going to wash our cars?

cowgirlsareforever · 23/02/2017 15:42

I think they don't want to do that Peregrina because their practice is in a socially deprived area of a northern city. Nobody would be able to pay privately so, no, it isn't 'simple.'

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/02/2017 15:43

Thats dreadfully unprofessional of your dentist cow

cowgirlsareforever · 23/02/2017 15:58

It isn't my dentist. My dentist doesn't take NHS patients, sadly.

olliegarchy99 · 23/02/2017 16:05

lunde
my objection is to the guardian touting figures that are based on a very limited survey when the NHS facts of the makeup of staff are documented (check if you like) as follows
for every 100 NHS staff :-
88 are British
5 are EU
4 are Asian
2 are African
1 is other
I think we have more to fear from the British NHS staff leaving than the EU members Hmm

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/02/2017 16:10

Fair enough cow mine is mainly private as well

A good dentist...or one you can trust at least...is hard to find

cowgirlsareforever · 23/02/2017 16:13

I do worry about the NHS. My DP would never get any form of insurance should the NHS fold, because of the severity of his disability.

Lohengrin · 23/02/2017 17:36

@cowgirl

Most European countries operate compulsory insurance schemes. ALL legal residents are covered and contributions are means tested with a ceiling. People with disabilities, chronic illnesses are ALL covered. The level of care in the wealthier European countries is significantly better than that provided by the NHS. Just look at survival rates from Cancer etc

Why do you believe that your DP would not be covered by such a system? No- one is suggesting introducing a US style system. But there are far better models than the NHS.

cowgirlsareforever · 23/02/2017 18:00

Lohengrin I worry because if the NHS was to be scrapped there would be no guarantee that the new system would resemble the system you have described.

Mellifera · 23/02/2017 18:59

We are considering to leave because of Brexit. High earners, have been here 13 years. The way EU nationals have been treated I think TM would deserve if all just left. Arrogant cow that she is.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/02/2017 19:10

Lady on the news is leaving
She is a nurse if that makes any difference

Just thought it was interesting as it was being discussed on here

WidowWadman · 23/02/2017 21:39

I applied for citizenship when I started worrying about the possibility of Brexit. Many of my fellow immigrant friends thought I was OTT. A lot of them have applied now too. The fact that we have done that doesn't mean that many of us aren't thinking of leaving. Protecting your rights whilst investigating what your options are is prudent.

Before 23rd June I would never have thought of leaving. Things have changed massively since, and I worry where my children will have the most opportunities. Many others feel the same

taytopotato · 24/02/2017 11:12

But we are not training more nurses- university applications are already down in nursing due to the loss of bursary. The government is willing to train lesser qualified health care assistants.

We havent even talked about the EU staff in care homes. If the NHS is short of nurses- the shortage is much more palpable in care homes. This is not being brought up in mainstream news.

As I have said before, mortality increases when there is less degree educated nurses in a given setting.

Furthermore, there are already GP surgeries that cant recruit GPs. A lot of GPs and nurses will be retiring soon. Who will replace them?

One hospital in southwest is going to close its A&E department. Patients will be sent to the a specialist hospital miles away.

It is a scary time to be sick. Just wait and see what happens in the next 10 years - the ageing population starts becoming sick coupled with staff shortages, lack of investment in the resources.
