Brexit

My Romanian dentist...

MrsPeterDoherty · 20/02/2017 12:39

...is leaving the UK shortly due to Brexit.

There is a shortage of NHS dentist already in my home town. It will be difficult to find a new practice with space available for my family and me.

Thanks to the Leave voters, I will have rotten teeth!

I th I k it's time we stopped poaching the brightest and the best from Romania your dentist is needed there as well.

Anon1234567890 · 23/02/2017 09:25

Don't Romanians need dentists as well? after all they must have paid to train him!

Are you suggesting we get down on our knees and chant "we are not worthy", every-time we go to see a Romanian dentist? Surly its the Romanian dentist who should be thanking us for giving him a job and allowing him into our country? Why doesn't he become a UK citizen if he is worried about staying here?

birdybirdywoofwoof · 23/02/2017 10:05

The Op didn't say her dentist was going to Romania but hey. It is interesting this idea that Romanian dentists should only work in Romania - by extension I suppose we should really have only British dentists here. (Even if there aren't nearly enough, that will be a massive improvement on having foreigners check our teeth.)

InfiniteSheldon · 23/02/2017 10:10

No I don't think Romanian dentists should only work in Romania but there is a very valid point to be made about poaching the youth, the brightest and the best. To start a post worrying about losing your dentist when said Dentists country of origin has appalling shortages deserves comment.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 23/02/2017 10:43

Grin Romania has some of the best dental services in the world but its very good of you to suggest that Romanian dentists should stay at home.

Our dentist shortage here is getting worse and worse but wealthy people will be able to pay to go privately - or fly to Romania for treatment - it doesn't really matter if the poor have bad teeth.

InformalRoman · 23/02/2017 10:45

Does Romania have a shortage of dentists? Doesn't look like it ...

"Romania is one of the newest member states of the European Union (EU). It has 13 dental schools, 14,841 dentists and 2,935 dental technicians providing oral health care for a population, at 31 December 2014, of 21.3 million ... there has been overproduction of new dentists (currently 1500 graduate annually). This has led to un and under-employment and emigration of dentists to other EU member states."

How strange

I get taxis all the time with Romanian/polish drivers. Not one of them is bothered about Brexit or planning on going anywhere.

AquaLatte · 23/02/2017 10:49

Actually I tell a lie. Receptionist at the local leisure centre is going back to Romania.

Because it's "cold, miserable and dirty in the UK". Her mates are going too, they've been here just over a year.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/02/2017 10:57

aqua

Some Romanians are leaving some are not

I think the OP is concerned about the fact her dentist is actually leaving

I would be concerned about losing my dentist...he is scottish though

birdybirdywoofwoof · 23/02/2017 11:01

What's so strange Aqua, I'm not getting it?

AquaLatte · 23/02/2017 11:02

No I get that. But I'd be surprised if it's solely because of Brexit. Seems a bit like cutting off your nose to spite your face. There's no reason to go just because of Brexit.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 23/02/2017 11:06

Oh right. You think its strange because you had never heard of any other Europeans leaving the UK 'just because of Brexit'?

That is strange.

AquaLatte · 23/02/2017 11:15

Really.

So your average European who is happy here, has a secure job, family, social life etc is leaving because of Brexit. Just Brexit. Not other reason? Wasn't possibly toying with the idea of going anyway and this tipped them over the edge.

You don't think that's a strange decision? They've been told they don't have to go. They won't have to go. Nothing is changing for them. I think that's a strange reason to uproot a perfectly happy life.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/02/2017 11:23

but its ok for your receptionist to leave because the weather is bad and the streets are dirty

That seems strange to me

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/02/2017 11:23

Not that strange to be fair

I would move in aheartbeat for better weather Grin

I have several European friends who's response to Brexit has been to apply for UK citizenship, none of them have ever said they don't feel welcome. I think if the Romanian dentist is going to leave its because he doesn't think of the UK as his home.

We want immigrants to integrate into the UK and treat it as their home. We don't want immigrants who feel entitled to some sort of special treatment/adoration.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/02/2017 11:28

Where on earth has it been said that he wants special treatment or adoration

Or do you mean that if he doesnt take citizenship that he wants special treatment or adoration

Cailleach1 · 23/02/2017 11:34

" Well it's a win for Romanians who need a dentist."

Or any of the other 26 countries in the EU.

Anon1234567890 · 23/02/2017 11:35

Where on earth has it been said that he wants special treatment or adoration Then why would he be leaving, no one is asking him to go so one has to assume he wants something he thinks he isn't getting.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 23/02/2017 11:42

*Where on earth has it been said that he wants special treatment or adoration.

Wow.

What a curious way of thinking you have.

Lunde · 23/02/2017 11:51

Article in the Guardian today that 12,000 EU trained doctors are cosidering leaving the UK as a result of Brexit and post-Brexit anti-immigrant attitudes
www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/feb/23/thousands-eea-doctors-may-leave-uk-after-brexit-survey-bma

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 23/02/2017 11:51

Gosh i am with birdy on that one

Thats quite the leap you are making there anon

AquaLatte · 23/02/2017 11:55

"Considering"

Numbers who actually are leaving or making moves to leave? Probably a lot smaller.

Again. Why would you leave purely because of Brexit? If you are otherwise happy here. Genuine question

olliegarchy99 · 23/02/2017 12:00

lunde
You do realise this figure (typical guardian!) is based on a survey of just over 1000 doctors of whom some 500 said they might leave.
Some leap to '12000 doctors will leave' don't you think - but don't let the truth get in the way of scare-mongering Angry

olliegarchy99 · 23/02/2017 12:02

the actual figures from that rag :
The BMA’s findings are based on a survey it undertook of 1,193 EEA doctors working in the UK. When asked if they were thinking about leaving the UK following last year’s referendum vote, 500 (42%) said yes, 309 (26%) said no, 278 (23%) were unsure, while the other 106 did not answer.
