surfer you know i love you but...

The United States joined World War II as a response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii by the Japanese on Dec. 7, 1941. The country had been keeping itself isolated from the global war; however, after the attack, the country declared war on Japan on Dec. 8, 1941.

Germany and Italy, who had a pact with Japan, declared war on the United States three days later on December 11. This meant the U.S. forces had to fight on two fronts: one in the Pacific and one in Europe.

surferjet · 30/01/2017 20:13

Sorry Badders123 but you don't know what you're talking about.

All the best though.

What part of Badders' post was wrong?

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 30/01/2017 20:14

Special attantion should go to the phrase

the country had been keeping itself isolated

Badders123 · 30/01/2017 20:15

And I truly believe in years to come May et al will be tarred with the same brush as petain and his ilk.
As I said, if we dont learn from history we are doomed to repeat it.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 30/01/2017 20:15

Sorry about the attantion

Its me accent

Kaija · 30/01/2017 20:17

And while we're on the US's role in WW2, here's a very apposite cartoon from Dr Seuss in 1941

WrongTrouser · 30/01/2017 20:18

Is "whataboutery" the new "but you leavers done do facts, do you?" if someone doesn't want to continue a particular line of discussion?

WrongTrouser · 30/01/2017 20:18

don't do, not done do

GhostofFrankGrimes · 30/01/2017 20:19

If Trump gave a toss about Britain Johnson wouldn't have needed to grovel to get protection for UK citizens. Clearly little old blighty didn't cross the Donald's mind when he was implementing his travel restrictions.

Badders123 · 30/01/2017 20:20

None if it, Kaija.
I was very honoured to meet some of the people who were involved with the rebuilding of Britain after the Second World War many years ago in London and their take was that the US only got involved because of pearl harbour. Viewed US with suspicion and esp ambassador Jospeh Kennedy who was of course a nazi appeaser.
The isolationism of the US was a cause of the Japanese attack in their view.
Again, this was people who were there. At the time.
But yeah....what do I know?
I can recommend some books if you are interested?

The US bailed us out financially after WW2 - Take my word for it.

wrong

Dunno

My personal favourite is still #alternative facts

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 30/01/2017 20:22

surfer

The US lent us money.

The bank lent me money...that does not make them my friend

Or prove that they care about me

I am quite good with my history and the whole reading thing so i dont need to take your word for it

Badders123 · 30/01/2017 20:23

Surfer is talking about the Marshall plan (or more correctly the ERP)
The uk and Europe was mired in debt after the war and the good ole US lent us lots for humongous rates in interest.
Bless em.
Don't doubt that that is how most Americans see the uk....a tiny island they got out of trouble 70 years ago.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 30/01/2017 20:24

We have not had a special relationship since thatcher and reagan

Which is, i agree, a shame

GhostofFrankGrimes · 30/01/2017 20:26

The US bailed us out financially after WW2 - Take my word for it.

It would be nice to think the US might bail the UK economy out once it has tanked thanks to Brexit but Trump will probably be too busy buying the lucrative parts of Britain for knock down prices.

Badders123 · 30/01/2017 20:26

That's just reminded me of One of my fave Simpson quotes...
After the invasion of Iraq (and hasn't THAT gone well!?) there was an episode referencing the sudden hatred of anything French in the US (remember freedom fries?)
Homer calls the French "cheese eating surrender monkeys"
😂
With apologies to my French brothers and sisters but god, that made me laugh!

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 30/01/2017 20:26

Oh and the destroyers for bases deal...

Nice one USA Hmm

Badders123 · 30/01/2017 20:27

Thatcher had brains....may? Not so much.
Reagan was a goon but at least he had some political experience.

Kaija · 30/01/2017 20:28

"Is "whataboutery" the new "but you leavers done do facts, do you?" if someone doesn't want to continue a particular line of discussion?"

I don't completely understand what this means, but whataboutery is when an objection to any particular injustice is met with cries of "how dare you protest about this when a much worse thing is happening in x,y,z country" etc. There's a lot of it about lately.

Dapplegrey1 · 30/01/2017 20:33

Kaija - I suppose my comment was whataboutry but it wasn't supposed to be provocative - more just a comment on the fact the queen has had all sorts, some pretty grim

Kaija · 30/01/2017 20:34

Good scenes from the anti-Trump protests in Scotland. Nice turn of phrase on that placard,

The Brexit Arms. A friendly place for anyone wanting to chat about Brexit.
SemiPermanent · 30/01/2017 20:45

And that means I'm out of this thread and off to protest.

Enjoy Badders!
See you on the flip side!

(Then I realised that after you promised to flounce, you were still posting... Sad)

Badders123 · 30/01/2017 20:46

No
I'm really going this time...
