the white British Male who is now at the very bottom of the social heap in the UK?

Ah yes. Those poor oppressed white British men. Hardly one of them has a position of power or influence in this country. In the words of Donald Trump 'so sad'.

StripeyMonkey1 · 17/01/2017 22:00

Debbie - I'm not recommending deportation of anyone!

I actually think that the "white British male" in question would struggle in a hard neoliberal society unless highly skilled, although he might well have an advantage over women if we repeal EU maternity rights and move to a more US style model.

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 17/01/2017 22:00

A country has voted to leave a club, why on earth would that club try and stop them and indeed punish them for doing so? Is that a club or a prison?

surferjet · 17/01/2017 22:01

To be fair. calling your fellow country folk racist bigots just because they dared to have a different opinion was never a good move. Trying to shut people up over legitimate concerns was never going to work long term.
Anyway, let's keep it friendly Wine

And telling people to fuck off out of their own country? Yeah, that's not going to work either.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 17/01/2017 22:04

Nobody is being punished. Let May push the A50 button.

StripeyMonkey1 · 17/01/2017 22:06

Wine surferjet.

I am concerned about the type of country we might become. Ultimately, we all live on this island together so let's hope for the best possible. It could all still work out and fingers crossed. I don't want us to take a big unnecessary gamble though, and end up with a mess, and that is the way I think it might be going.

Ontopofthesunset · 17/01/2017 22:09

If you're a member of a club, you usually pay a membership fee and you get certain rights - you know, you can use the swimming pool and the tennis courts. When you leave a club, you don't pay the membership fee and you don't get to use the pool anymore. That's not punishment. That's simply being in the club anymore.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 17/01/2017 22:10

trying

Thanks for all the happy birthday greetings. Didn't get any on the other thread! Wonder why?

Thats a shame...did you mention that its your birthday on the other thread?

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 17/01/2017 22:11

Stripey I see the EU as a huge gamble that has not worked and is in a mess, and I am thrilled we are walking away from it - we gave it a try and it did not work. And more than that - we didnt vote for it.

Great you think that Grimes, Good to hear some positivey! Lets hope the EU licks its egotistical wounds and gets on with doing a good deal for all - without all this cherry picking crap.

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 17/01/2017 22:13

I have to laugh as well BMW...all the people wailing about how bad Brexit will be for them and the country....yet they are still here?Confused

StripeyMonkey1 · 17/01/2017 22:13

Happy birthday Trying. Wine

My Dad came out from hospital today so, despite my dislike of the Brexit news, I have overall had a pretty positive day too.

There are more important things for all of us, both Leavers and Remainers. Must remember that Smile

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 17/01/2017 22:13

Yes but perhaps if you are the only one who knows how to clean said pool, and provide it with water - the club has to offer some deal so it can keep its own pool going?

Or they can loose the pool, and all the benefits that brings to the club.

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 17/01/2017 22:15

Flowers stripey - yes quality of life is Key for me. Roll on Article 50, or by pass article 50 and just leave.

That's fair Debbie.

From my perspective, I think that there are problems with the EU but I'm not sure they are so great that they cannot be fixed.

I still think that Brexit is not to our advantage as a country in any form, but it is more an unnecessary risk than a definite disaster.

Ultimately, I would prefer not to Brexit as I think we are only going to lose, and possibly lose a lot that matters to us.

StripeyMonkey1 · 17/01/2017 22:18

Thanks Surfer and Debbie

StripeyMonkey1 · 17/01/2017 22:19

Ok, I'm off. Goodnight all.

NumberOneTricky · 17/01/2017 22:22

Hmm, not that tricky to understand really. Not everyone can afford to up sticks and move. Lots of people have commitments keeping them here such as elderly parents etc. Also, not everyone has the options to move to another country. Visa requirements for places like Australia are quite strict, and obviously moving to an EU country won't be all that straightforward from now on. And then there are many, many people who fully believe the whole thing is a shambles but they still want to live here and hope against hope that things will somehow get better. It's their home.

So yes, they're still here and will continue to be here no matter how many people tell them to 'fuck off somewhere else'.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 17/01/2017 22:29

I dont think brexit will necessarily be bad for me

I think its the wrong thing to do and will probably be bad for the countrybut nothing i can do about that

certainly dont see why anyone should leave the country...

SemiPermanent · 17/01/2017 23:01

Good news about your dad Stripey!

2rebecca · 17/01/2017 23:53

It was frustrating hearing the Italian politician on Newsnight saying "of course the EU has to reform". If the rest of the EU had realised earlier that free movement wasn't just a mess for the UK and that it and other aspects needed reform Brexit could have been avoided.

Limer · 18/01/2017 07:28

Very good point 2rebecca The rest of the EU are panicking now, with one of the biggest contributors going and an ever-lengthening queue of poorer countries clamouring to get their noses in the trough.

What swung it for Brexit was the Romanian family in the 'How to get a Council House' TV programme.
