Fudge the argument?! Confused

Inkanta · 08/01/2017 13:13

'Ha, see if you admire IDS it just makes me question you even more.

Mango, MN isn't an echo chamber there are lots of differing opinions on here, I have had really good discussions with people on this thread.

But do continue to fudge the argument.'

You see DARTH - I don't want clever conversation. I don't want to work that hard. I just want someone who I can talk to about this - on this thread.

Why don't you guys start another serious thread - and put forward all your critiques and systematically work through it step by step.

DarthPlagueis · 08/01/2017 13:18

Because I don't have to, this one is right here :)

Mango, fudging the argument, like saying No, " Darth says its rubbish so it must be" without actually engaging with what I said, concerning a serious article which was linked to.

But no what you want everyone to do is nod and:" say yes, yes absolutely right" when in fact that piece had several glaring inaccuracies and ignored lots of important facts regarding who is leading brexit.

surferjet · 08/01/2017 13:18

Thing is Bearbehind, no one is going to change their mind on Brexit, not on these threads anyway. So all the arguing is pretty pointless isn't it? It's arguing for arguments sake & that's not what this thread is about.
Plus hardly any remainers post on here anymore because they don't really see the point, & they're right.
I can't stop anyone posting on here that's true, but you're not going to get an argument from me.
But If you want to sit in a pub surrounded by pictures of IDS then that's up to you. Smile

I guess this wouldn't be a good point to quote Yeats, Russell or Bukowski ... Grin

DarthPlagueis · 08/01/2017 13:22

That's fine surfer. There was actually really good data based conversation on here over Christmas.

However, I don't agree with allowing people just to have echo chambers, and will continue.

IDS doesn't bother me, if you want to admire someone who lied about his qualifications, hits the poor whilst living on an estate that is subsidized by the EU to the tune of 2.4 mullion a year, and completely failed in every position he has been in . Fine by me.

MangoMoon · 08/01/2017 13:25

So, read the article and critique as necessary - I read posts, I learn from posters, I find out other info etc - however, this is a mn thread not school or uni.
I am not being graded.
I simply posted an (old) article which I found which raised some points I (personally) found interesting - I cannot control, nor would I want to control, what people's responses are.

Also, I cannot understand your obsession with 'the leaders of brexit' and their motivations - I voted Leave, but that does not make me a vacuous LeaveBot who embraces Nige, Bojo, gove et al as leaders of the free world, whose every utterance I cling onto like a rabid limpet Confused

'Mango, fudging the argument, like saying No, " Darth says its rubbish so it must be" without actually engaging with what I said, concerning a serious article which was linked to.'

Maybe you're just too clever for us DARTH. But you can't hijack a lighthearted thread like this and expect, and feel entitled even, to have folk engage with you in this very serious manner.

InformalRoman · 08/01/2017 13:26

IDS - author of "the litany of stupid".

'That's fine surfer. There was actually really good data based conversation on here over Christmas.'

Well that was Christmas DARTH and most of us were in hibernation mode them.

DarthPlagueis · 08/01/2017 13:29

Ah but the thread is only light hearted when you want it to be, there are pages and pages of serious discussion, links to academic works etc. The statement in question was regarding an LSE work that Mango linked to, and I then questioned the veracity of it.

What you mean is you don't want to have to discuss anything with someone with an opposing view.

surferjet · 08/01/2017 13:30

I wasn't on here over Christmas Confused I don't think there were any 'discussions'.

Correct.

DarthPlagueis · 08/01/2017 13:32

Then go post on the UKIP talkboards, I'm sure they exist.

DarthPlagueis · 08/01/2017 13:33

"I wasn't on here over Christmas confused I don't think there were any 'discussions'."

Oh there were! Go have a look, data and graphs and everything.

surferjet · 08/01/2017 13:35

I was here first, this is my thread, why don't you go and post on the 'we love the EU / Nick Clegg' talk boards?

Veracity? Why talk like that - come down a bit, imagine you're a pub and we're all relaxed and chatting and having a drink and laughing too. It can be done. We don't all have to agree ...

Inkanta · 08/01/2017 13:37

in a pub ...

DarthPlagueis · 08/01/2017 13:37

Because I'm not the one complaining Surfer. Great arguing there though, I was here first? Are you 5?

And Um yeah, if you're going to cite academic work it means the conversation is serious.

Its only not serious when you choose it not to be.

Bearbehind · 08/01/2017 13:40

surfer, I actually admire your honesty admitting you just want to be in your own bubble. I do wonder how many other Leavers would agree with your view point that you literally don't want to hear anything other than about rainbows and unicorns.

Inkanta · 08/01/2017 13:40

'And Um yeah, if you're going to cite academic work it means the conversation is serious.'

NO it doesn't!

DarthPlagueis · 08/01/2017 13:42

Its not exactly laid back is it?

Oh and Surfer feels fine to come out of here to debate when she chooses.

surferjet · 08/01/2017 13:47

I choose my battles very carefully yes.
Most of the time I can't be bothered talking to anyone about anything.

But, my idea of getting us all together in a laid back friendly way does work. I think?

OP posts:
DarthPlagueis · 08/01/2017 13:50

Of course, but it only seems to work when its all going one way.

As I said, the whole thing that started this was the link to the LSE blog about leaving the EU being a way to escape its Neo liberal approach. I said it was fanciful as the UK is the most neo liberal of all states, and that Brexit was being led by the arch neo liberals.

That's a conversation, and one I would have in the pub, it then started to get all echo chambery.

MangoMoon · 08/01/2017 14:04

Firstly, I didn't 'cite' anything.
I linked to something I thought was interesting.
It's different.

Secondly, the big hard on about Britain being the most neoliberal country within the eu was exactly one of the things the article covered - we are already far down that path thanks to Thatcher onwards.
