The Great Ormond Street Hospital lady on QT last night is now under attack from the Mail. They are twisting her words and calling for her to be sacked.

Unbelievable.

I am beginning to despair now.

OP posts:
autumnintheair · 05/11/2016 20:06

we have posters on here who desperately wanted Nissan to pull out of Sunderland to teach the Leavers from there a lesson

yes we have witnessed this. So hear the same sort of bitter sentiment on national TV, its not a huge stretch to think she does think this.

autumnintheair · 05/11/2016 20:08

These are consequences that any intelligent adult should be considering prior to spouting off on national television

i agree and its hard to get past this.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 05/11/2016 20:13

Of course she is going to be disciplined at work and rightly so

and she is going to be remembered as that women who wished children ill

I think that's enough punishment

rainyinnovember · 05/11/2016 20:24

Birdy, the problem is you seem to think I am giving an opinion on what the women spoke about which I'm not. As you rightly point out, I don't know enough about it to give my view.

What I can give my view on is what this woman said which I feel was at best stupid, naive, ill-judged and wrong.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 06/11/2016 07:55

No, you (not just you) are furious at this woman's stupid, naive, ill-judged and wrong comments, but have absolutely no idea - worse than no idea, no interest even - of the bigger picture which is that research and science in the UK is about to get fucked.

That is the problem.

rainyinnovember · 06/11/2016 09:51

I don't think I'm furious, birdy, and I've read through my posts which are calm so I'm a bit lost as to how you reached that, to be honest! Anyway - I'm not furious. Initially I was inclined to be sympathetic and that sympathy waned when I realised it wasn't a case of badly wording a valid point but a deliberately chosen phrase.

But, to return to 'no idea - no interest even.'

It's one of those "all fish live in water; not everything that lives in water is a fish", isn't it?

"I voted for the UK to leave the EU" does not equate to "I am against everything the EU does", any more than "I vote for the UK to stay in the EU" means "I am in favour of absolutely everything the EU does." We all end up with a balancing act.

This woman works in GOSH which is one of the most famous hospitals for unwell children in the UK. And it is in London, which isn't entirely coincidental. GOSH will benefit from research funded by the EU, and this woman's salary will too (plumped up by her private practices, of course) and that's all very well and good.

If you are a seriously ill child living in Darlington, Yorkshire, Shropshire, Bangor, your options might be a tad more limited.

Aderyn2016 · 06/11/2016 09:56

But this thread isn't about the effect of Brexit but about this woman's comments. So far as I can see, she was very clear and the only people twisting her words are the ones trying to excuse her inexcusable (imo) behaviour on national television. If I was her employer and she had been on television representing my organisation, I'd be mortified and seriously distancing myself. This is not the sort of publicity GOSH needs.

As an aside, I believe in freedom of speech, no matter how rude and offensive it is (with the proviso that your words do not promote causing physical harm to others). I'd always rather know what people are really thinking - not saying it out loud doesn't mean someone isn't thinking it in private. So I support her right to her opinion. If that is what she really thinks then she shouldn't apologise and try to weasel out of it because her employer is pissed off and it marks her out as nasty. She should own her words. Or make the choice to stfu in public. I'd also support her employers right to distance themselves from her viewpoint.

Bolshybookworm · 06/11/2016 10:14

There are research active hospitals in Yorkshire, Darlington and Bangor rainy. It's not just research and hospitals in London that will lose out when we leave the EU.

rainyinnovember · 06/11/2016 10:15

I don't doubt that for a moment, Bolshy, but nonetheless, the best known and certainly the standpoint from which this woman was arguing from/for, was a London-centric one.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 06/11/2016 10:48

This thread isn't about the women's comments but the daily mails 'gunning' for people they disagree with.

Eh, I don't get at all what you're saying about research funding now rainy. You think research hospitals all over the country aren't going to suffer massively? That her opinion is less valid because she works in a London hospital? How...perculiar.

rainyinnovember · 06/11/2016 10:51

Birdy, throughout this thread you have stated I am saying something completely different to what I in fact am saying, and then professed to be bemused by your interpretation.

I do not know enough about research to state whether or not it will suffer massively.

But I think you know that one of the feelings about the referendum was that the EU disproportionately benefited wealthy people, in particular those living in London. She has in many ways confirmed this standpoint.

Aderyn2016 · 06/11/2016 10:59

Has the DM said anything about this woman which is untrue? As far as I can see they have quoted both her QT statement and her apology, where she attempted to take back what she said. They have used her own tweets and facebook to write the article? Am no fan of the DM but I didn't think they had made anything up and attributed it to her.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 06/11/2016 10:59

The Eu disproportionately benefited wealthy people?

Bloody hell- where are people getting their information from?

Oh I know, the daily mail. Grin

rainyinnovember · 06/11/2016 11:00

The Mail I quite clearly said I didn't read earlier in the thread :)

Some of us are capable of making up our own minds, birdy

birdybirdywoofwoof · 06/11/2016 11:11

ah good, as us poor haven't benefited as much from the eu, maybe, contrary to analysis, we won't be as hard hit over the next few years as all the wealthy people by brexit. Grin
