Brexit

The Fail is now gunning for the GOSH QT lady

The Great Ormond Street Hospital lady on QT last night is now under attack from the Mail. They are twisting her words and calling for her to be sacked.

Unbelievable.

I am beginning to despair now.

Which is more 'horrible' I wonder.

a. That Brexit will have a terrible affect on science research and funding - which will have a huge impact on all of us.

b. That Britain's most-read newspaper seeks to campaign against and villify anyone (whether in the public eye or not) who speaks/behaves out of the 'brexit' line.

c. That a HCP got her words wrong on QT.

I definitely vote C.

Sackings too good for her. I'm with Unicorn, public hangings.

TheElementsSong · 05/11/2016 11:01

I saw that QT and was Shock at what she said (up to that point I had been in agreement with what she was saying about research networks and funding). Definitely grounds for disciplinary action, don't know whether it should go as far as dismissal as that will depend on employer policy.

But yes, let's throw her in the Tower with all the other Enemies of the People.

oliviafrombolivia · 05/11/2016 11:02

I am a member of a few Facebook pro EU groups - this lady (used to) be a member of at least one of them. She mangled her words pure and simple, she wanted her say, and in the heat of the moment on national TV got it (quite badly) wrong. She is mortified. She is now receiving threats from far right groups, EDL (I think it is them) have circulated her contact details online..

rainyinnovember · 05/11/2016 11:04

Well, I'm guessing that we all have a slightly different stance depending on where we stand politically and socially.

Objectively I do not think anyone should be sacked for getting their words mangled. But I don't think that's what happened here, and I do think there is a question as to whether the sort of views she aired very publicly are compatible with the role she has, which is working with children and their families.

There are shortages in all sorts of areas but there is an expectation that if behaviour goes beyond what is considered reasonable then continuing in that profession be prohibited.

Fwiw I don't think this case does come into the above category but I do think some form of action is necessary. It really was an awful thing to say.

oliviafrombolivia · 05/11/2016 11:06

she knows it was an awful thing to say too..

birdybirdywoofwoof · 05/11/2016 11:09

I'll take it that's a C then, Rainy. Grin

rainyinnovember · 05/11/2016 11:12

It's 'none of the above', birdy, to be honest.

I think vilifying her with death threats is horrific and awful.

I also think it was an awful thing to say.

So awful she should be sacked; no, so meaningless and unintentional for 'no further action', no also.

She has apologised, her employers have distanced themselves from the remark, so really what more can be done? Nothing, I suppose. But I still feel for my part a certain amount of lip-curling revulsion.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 05/11/2016 11:21

You don't think A is pretty horrid?

I see.

rainyinnovember · 05/11/2016 11:30

I'm not a medical professional, and I won't pretend to have a clue in that respect, birdy

Bejazzled · 05/11/2016 11:30

That paper is horrible and has a track record in this type of gutter journalism. However, I watched the programme (and commented on this in the TV thread) I didn't get the impression she used wrong words, she knew exactly what she was saying. She did that passive aggressive thing of finishing her sentence with "I'm sorry" that people use to try and defend a horrible opinion - she meant it and it was a dreadful thing to think and say.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 05/11/2016 11:48

That figures.

ReallyTired · 05/11/2016 12:31

I suppose the reality is that it's quite likely that some of the parents of her current patients voted leave. I would be very offended if a health professional wanted my child to suffer.

Aderyn2016 · 05/11/2016 12:38

She wished illness on innocent children because their parents exercised their democratic right to an opinion which she doesn't share. Saying sorry does not make that right. She should be sacked. If you cannot speak appropriately in public, then you shouldn't be on television, speaking in public.

ReallyTired · 05/11/2016 12:41

She made a stupid mistake in the heat of the moment. However if she is sacked there will be no one to treat these children with severe problems. It has to be remember that GOSH treats the most severely affected children who the average hospital can't cope with.

Aderyn2016 · 05/11/2016 12:44

I think it is a dangerous route to go down if we say that some people can say what they like and not be sacked because their skills are needed, but people with fewer skills can be held to account for the words which come out of their mouths because they are less important.

Wookiecookies · 05/11/2016 12:47

I think the vile threats against this woman are an utter discrace and embarrassment to the whole of the UK, as is the treatment of the judges in this case. However, I 100% agree with rainy here. I watched the original programme and I have rewatched the clip again and again now, IMHO she DID NOT mangle her words, she meant to say what she said, and that is clear to me with the emphatic nature in which she pushed to deliver the comment. That said, a public warning and a public statemement issued by GOSH would be more than sufficient. She shouldnt be sacked, as I think she has more than learnt her lesson here and sacking would be disproportionate.

Birdy, gas lighting does not help your argument, Rainy has given no indication that she agrees or supports the vile treatment of this woman, so may I suggest you head over to some of these vile EDL sites/Daily fail and take out your justifiable anger on the real instigators of this abhorrent behaviour, and not on rainy who has offered nothing more than a reasoned and fair assessment of this situation.

AutumnLeavesAgain · 05/11/2016 12:54

What did she want to say Olivia?

Did she forget to put "I feel.." in front? This seems to be a get out clause (on MN at least.) In my opinion it is a disingenuous trend.

funnyandwittyusername · 05/11/2016 12:58

Of course she should be sacked. If a UKIP type said something racist, would you make an excuse that they "mangled" their words? Or would there be frothing that they should be sacked from their employment, especially if it was a public sector type job like teacher, nurse, police officer? She knew what she was saying

TheElementsSong · 05/11/2016 13:03

"I feel.."

G'wan Autumn, tell us all what you're hinting at...

birdybirdywoofwoof · 05/11/2016 13:06

Birdy, gas lighting does not help your argument,

I don't know what you mean.

It's clearly very important to some people on this thread that this woman loses her job: the fact that science research and funding has been dealt a calamitous blow (which is what she was trying to say) is not important to them at all - in fact as rainy admits, she doesn't have a clue in that respect.

I understand it makes people feel good to vilify some woman rather than look at what she was trying to say about what is happening to our health service.

funnyandwittyusername · 05/11/2016 13:18

Birdy, do you know her?

birdybirdywoofwoof · 05/11/2016 13:20

No why?

funnyandwittyusername · 05/11/2016 13:34

You just seem sure what she was trying to say (not a passive aggressive pop at you by the way)

I agree with her point about funding being cut, but I also believe she meant what she said especially having watched the clip. She's not flustered

oliviafrombolivia · 05/11/2016 13:47

I think she meant that those who want the UK to leave the EU should think about the impact on medical research and the possible impact on their own families if God forbid they have a child who one day needs treatment at Great Ormond Street.

Aderyn2016 · 05/11/2016 13:53

Next time I say something really shitty I'm going to come on here and ask you all to reinvent it for me and tell me what I really meant, so I can spin it and not look like a total cow!
