THE BREXIT FALLOUT CONTINUES - THREAD NINE

The Tories have settled their scores and May is now PM.
Is it May's Day or May Day for the people?

After careful consideration I thought the best way to sum up the Labour Contest was in one simple picture. May Day, might also be appropriate here too.

Things are moving fast, so hold on tight for the Brexit Ride

Sense of humour compulsory. No experience necessary though

Uh-oh.

Philip Hammond has said Britain will come out the single market as part of its decision to leave the EU, but will negotiate access to the bloc.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/philip-hammond-brexit-single-market-eu-referendum-theresa-may-cabinet-chancellor-a7136101.html

A reminder to us all how difficult it is to predict what's going to happen.

LineyReborn · 14/07/2016 12:00

And I've been wondering what she'll do with Leadsom's cheerleader and junior minister Penny Mordaunt. She of the veto untruth.

HalsallRedux · 14/07/2016 12:00

HIGNFY has a favourite clip of Liz Truss at some conference or other bigging up the importation (or maybe exportation) of pork products. It makes her look witless does not show her in a good light. But I dunno, maybe she has hidden depths

Can I add my twopence-worth to the people who've praised these amazing threads? They're the first thing I turn to now for analysis and comment. I'm a Mass Observer and they've asked for people to send in their thoughts on the Referendum fallout. I genuinely have no idea where to start but quite frankly, copying and pasting all these threads would be the best moment-by-moment insight into what's been happening. They are utterly brilliant. Thank you all.

no rate cute.

8 - 1 vote... interesting.

'TM would have to be under deperate pressure to give her anything except a stilleto heel where the sun don't shine.'

A leopard print one no doubt!

My take on Boris. TM wants the UK to play hardball in negotiations - see her stance so far vis a vis EU Nationals. PH was very "accommodating" with the US, the ME, China and the EU. Boris is much more combatative. He has a well deserved reputation for hyperbole which can easily be ameliorated / disavowed later on BUT he gets the point across first.

Last word on Scotland. I was also incensed at the way the voting for the Scottish referendum was handled. I think it is an absolute scandal that Scottish soldiers serving overseas were disenfranchised. To nuance what I said earlier, I agree Scotland cannot win for Labour on its own, but I disagree that it is possible for a Southern centric LP to win without also bringing on board the North - this is why Blair always needed Brown and why jettisoning Brown signalled the end of the Blairite legacy imo.

Lib Dem MP Tom Brake asks for a debate on "the fantastic contribution of our leisure industries", which could explore the possibility of "a transcontinental network of zipwires to allow the new foreign secretary to travel in the manner to which he's accustomed".

Commons Leader Chris Grayling calls it "an interesting idea".

Good to know that May's campaign manager has a high opinion of Johnson too.

Grin again!

BigChocFrenzy · 14/07/2016 12:04

I was hoping Ruth Davidson would be a Minister Without Portfolio or something, to use her obvious talents and also reach out to Scotland

She would obviously be consulted about Brexit, Indyref, handling Sturgeon etc but I'd like to see public acknowledgement that the government can't just be about England.

Did I miss anything about Scotland or NI appointments ?

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 12:04

Can someone reassure me by confirming no way would TM give health to IdS

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/07/2016 12:04

Snap!

OlennasWimple · 14/07/2016 12:05

I know nauticant. But I bet it was the first decision made, if not announced Smile

OlennasWimple · 14/07/2016 12:05

TM thinks IDS is an idiot. Health needs a safe pair of hands - Woollaston, methinks

RedToothBrush · 14/07/2016 12:06

howabout, you mean send in Boris first make everyone cry and beg to deal with May?

boogling mind

IDS has lost almost all his power & influence in the party.
Most importantly, I bet TM doesn't want to see his nasty face curdling her cuppa every Cabinet meeting.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 12:08

We all said that about foreign sec...

Chalalala · 14/07/2016 12:09

Philip Hammond has said Britain will come out the single market as part of its decision to leave the EU, but will negotiate access to the bloc.

The title doesn't seem to correspond to the actual quote? He says he does want access to the single market:

“The question is how we negotiate with the European Union, not from the point of view of being members of it but from the point of view of being close neighbours and trade partners of it."

He added: "I would like to see us negotiating access to the single market for Britain's businesses, so we can go on selling our goods and services into the European Union market and indeed enjoying the benefits of consuming European Union goods and services here as we do now."

Ah, actually, I see. He doesn't want to be in the single market, he just wants access to it.

Translation: Britain would like full access to this lovely European free-trade area please, but with none of the pesky political stuff or immigration.

What else is new, it's just the same old unicorn...

I mean, sure, they may as well ask for the moon as a starting negotiating position. They won't get it, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Showmethewaytogohome · 14/07/2016 12:11

JC not thinking about doing a reshuffle to match up TM's cabinet?

Oh wait...he can't. The cupboard is bare

Showmethewaytogohome · 14/07/2016 12:14

Is it silly for me to be pleased we have the first openly gay female cabinet minister. Again I may not agree with the politics but I am really pleased about this

Thegirlinthefireplace · 14/07/2016 12:15

A gay equalities minister makes sense. A female gay equalities Minster could actually be good for women.

Showmethewaytogohome · 14/07/2016 12:15

I also can't wait for the day that this isn't even a 'thing' to be pleased about!
